Writing Wednesday: Early Start

2 weeks ago, I had trouble getting up when my alarm went off. This week it looks like I might have the opposite problem. Monday morning I woke up at 2 a.m. Usually when that happens, I can go back to sleep. Nope. Wide awake. So I was at my computer by about 3. Had my Story a Day finished right around 4 and got caught up on replying to blog comments and checking out other blogs by 5(well, most of them, some carried over until later), when I started brainstorming the next story in my Kurztown series, High On Your Love(title inspired by Florida Georgia Line’s song H.O.L.Y because there was a line in it that I thought fit Morgan and Anna really well). N(the boy) had a “writer’s gallery” at the school Monday morning. There were a bunch of table set up in the gym and each of the kids had a binder of their writing from the year. It went from the beginning of the  year, where it was mostly scribbles, to the end where you can actually read most of it).

Tuesday I actually slept until 4, so that’s something at least. And it was a more lowkey day. I did make some good progress on my goals. This new routine seems to be working. So far anyway. Wednesday was a normal wake-up time again. Not sure what my internal alarm clock thought it was up to Monday, but it seems to be going back to normal.

And now, it’s Wednesday!! I mentioned on Sunday that I was changing things up again. Characters are clamoring for me to pay attention to them. So, I’ve decided to work on a different main project each day. Today’s was Heart of Christmas, but I don’t have much for that yet. Yesterday I started Still Burning, which I’ve finished a scene for and pasted one of my Stream of Consciousness pieces in as part of the next scene. For today I have 6 paragraphs(2+4 for the day) from Still Burning.

He walked through the house and opened the door that led to the back porch. His father was manning the grill, smiling at something Austin’s little sister was telling him, using quite a few hand gestures as she spoke. He smiled a little, knowing she hated being referred to that way. But, she wasn’t quite twelve yet, so as far as he was concerned, it fit. And she’d always be his little sister anyway.
Jai glanced over at him and grinned, his white teeth flashing against his brown skin. “Austin,” he said. “You made it.”
“I said I’d be here, didn’t I?” He didn’t know why he got defensive by Jai’s greeting. The man had never made him feel like he didn’t belong. Even though he was the only one of them who wasn’t his biological offspring.
But, Jai was the only father he’d ever known.
Jai continued smiling, though it seemed to dim slightly. Damn it. He hadn’t meant to do that. He didn’t even know what was wrong with him lately.
Yes, you do. He really wished he could shut that voice off. It didn’t matter. This was about time with his family. He didn’t need to let anything else intrude right now.

If you check out the snippet in my writing section below, you might get an idea of what that problem is. 😉

Plotting

  • Still Burning finish Story Toolkit, Outline
  • Jayla & Carisa(Gilbert, Co #7) brainstorm, character back stories, plot summaryget through Story Toolkit: Supporting Characters – This is going onto the backburner for the moment. I’ll pick it back up once I finish Not Meant to Be.
  • High on Your Love(Kurztown #6)brainstorm, character back stories, plot summary, Story Toolkit, Outline. This is Morgan(Kendall’s brother) & Anna’s story. I’m not currently sure if it’s going to be a Christmas novella(since that is when it takes place) or a full-length novel. Guess that will depend on what the characters have to tell me. I got the mind maps done, and Morgan’s back story started.

Writing

  • Not Meant to Be – Add 53000 words/28 scenes to finish 1st draft – 19204 words/21 scenes finished this month,
  • Still Burning(Hunter Family #4) – Write 70000 words/61 scenes – 1397 words/1 scene finished
    • He wondered if discussing the volunteers from the town’s other department counted toward the moratorium on fire talk. Or would that be sorted under girl problems? He shook his head. “No, it’s nothing.”
  • Side ProjectsAdd 4400 words between all projects – 8209/4400 words, 1584 words this week
    • Roman – 386 words – Carlos blinked then, and Roman saw it. Exactly what his boss had suggested. Pain and grief buried under the layer of anger. And it was a thin layer now that he looked closely. He wasn’t sure how Carlos would hold up if it was ripped away.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 509 words – He wouldn’t have expected to be so sad about that. He had not even been home in five years. It should not make him want to mourn. And yet he did. His brother had moved his young family to the city, and they had a place there, and he was learning a new trade. It had to be enough. He wanted to invite them to come here, but what had he to offer them? Not even his own land.
    • Preggers – 323 words – But, it was. And that woman in there had started to reawaken it. That thought brought another sob. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry, Darren.” She’d loved her husband and missed him so much. So how could she be having these feelings for someone else after only a few months? It wasn’t right.
    • Jacob & Matthew – 366 words – Barrett snorted softly as the woman headed away after he declined anything besides coffee. “What she wanted to offer you had nothing to do with food, my friend.”“As you should know, Barrett,” he said with barely a glance up at him. “Maybe you should go and tell her you have an appetite.” *This is pretty close to the beginning of Stained Blood. Soon, Barrett will only have an appetite for one woman, but he hasn’t met her yet. 😉

Editing

  • Flames of Renewal – CP Edits
  • In the Moonlight – Transfer from OneNote(on my Surface) to Scrivener(on my laptop) – 27 chapters(there’s actually 32, counting the epilogue, but I’d already started it before) – 19/27 chapters typed up.
  • Stained Blood – Adding this in as I’m starting to get chapters back from beta: Compile comments – 0/26 chapters. I’ve transferred 71/79 comments to the scrivener doc for Chapter 1. Well, not all those. I’m not copying the “this is great” type comments, though I love reading them. 🙂 And I love that Kingsoft Writer numbers them so I can keep track. I’ll get back to this during my next editing hour.
  • Snow White Twist – Beta edits, rename, & submitcompiled notes from 1 beta reader to the main document(so I can put them all in one place when I get them back from other reader) for 6/8 chapters(1st 2 chapters done last month). Have a potential title for it as well. Still simmering on that, though.
  • Dance with the Devilread through, make revisions, & polish – Applied 81/81 comments(not counting areas I highlighted, though those will be fixed as I go through, too). Polished 2/10 chapters.
  • Beta Read – Read 58 chapters(total of 73, but that’s what I have left) & return to author – 58/58 chapters. Will be emailing author later today(at least that’s the plan).

Blogging

  • Story a Day – Write 31 stories – 24/31 stories written, 3 this week
    • Diner – Anna’s getting the diner kitchen ready for the day and gets a surprise visitor.
    • The List – Morgan tells his ex exactly what his problems with her are.
    • Hidden Message – Caelen writes a letter to Alaina with a hidden message, trying to explain why he acted the way he did(which I haven’t written that part, so I only have a vague idea of what he did).

Reading

  • Listen: 5 books – 6/5 for the month, 1 this week
    •  Conspiracy(Lindsay Buroker) – this is book 4 in her Emperor’s Edge series.
    • The Immortal Irishman(Timothy Egan) – I don’t read or listen to much non-fiction. But this one was the daily deal back on St. Patrick’s day and it combines two of my interests, Irish history and the Civil War.
  • Read: 31 books – 24.5/31, 3.5 this week
    • Hometown Heartbreaker(Maisey Yates) – Finished this Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed it. I’m only counting it as half, since it was included in the back of another novel
    • Up in Flames(Sidney Bristol) – Finished this Sunday afternoon. Really enjoyed it. The next 2 books in the series are written by a different author, then this one wrote the fourth, so we’ll see how that goes.
    • Death at Peony House(Krista Walsh) – I started this Sunday afternoon. At 30%. This was still in my Unlimited folder, though I think the series is out of KU now. So this will be my “extra” book for now. Really enjoying it(so good incentive to finish my other books for the week and get back to it).
    • One Good Earl Deserves a Lover(Sara MacLean) – Started this Monday morning. Finished it Tuesday night. Really enjoyed it.
    • Before that Night(Violet Duke) – Started this Tuesday morning. Finished it Tuesday afternoon. Liked it.
    • Reckoning(Myndi Shafer) – Started this Wednesday morning. At 3%

Sunday Summary: Focus Found

On Wednesday I mentioned that I’d been feeling a bit scattered. Well, I also had a revelation on something that was going to happen in Not Meant to Be. I felt a lot more focused on Thursday and wrote that scene and things seem to be flowing a lot better. I’m still planning to rework how I work on things, though. I’m going to try working on a different story each day again. That way even if I’m struggling with one, I can make progress on another. I’m going to work on one for an hour, then do other stuff on the list, then I’ll edit for an hour, more chores, then side projects for an hour, and so on. Then, if I get everything done, I’ll start over again. We’ll see how this goes for the rest of the month and maybe even through June.

Busy weekend. Saturday we worked a poker run, a ride that benefits Make a Wish. We worked it last year, too. Also on Saturday we had niece’s birthday party and a friend’s kids birthday party. So, Friday we were out getting groceries and birthday presents. Husband dropped me and the kids at the park where niece’s party was and we hung out there until my sister-in-law showed up. Then, I joined him at the VFW to work the stop. Of course, most of the riders had already gone through by then. After niece’s party, we went to the school since friend’s son had a pool party there. Then, we finally went home and the kids played outside some more. Tonight we have our monthly meeting with the club we ride with. This was all after going to the boy’s spring concert at school on Thursday. I may need a whole week to recover from all this people time.

Plotting

  • Still Burning finish Story Toolkit, Outline
  • Jayla & Carisa(Gilbert, Co #7) brainstormcharacter back stories, plot summaryget through Story Toolkit: Supporting Characters – finished GMCs, Jayla’s back story(754 words), Carisa’s(who happens to be Carlos’ baby sister) back story(924 words),  Kaden’s back story(714 words), & Boden’s back story(195 words – he didn’t have a lot to tell me). This is going onto the backburner for the moment. I’ll pick it back up once I finish Not Meant to Be.

Writing

  • Not Meant to Be – Add 53000 words/28 scenes to finish 1st draft – 19204 words/21 scenes finished this month, 8121 words/8 scenes this week
    • Toby didn’t have a clue how that made anything better. As far as he could see, it only put her in more danger.
But, he’d do anything to make sure that never reached her.
  • Side ProjectsAdd 4400 words between all projects – 6625/4400 words, 1628 words this week
    • Preggers – 194 words – It didn’t work. She couldn’t stop the memories of Darren that almost played like old videos through her head. The times he’d sat next to her when she’d been so homesick, even with him there. How he’d known she got more comfort from that than a hug. Marika had somehow seemed to sense that as well. Or she just hadn’t thought they knew each other well enough for more than that.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 130 words – “There ye go, lad,” he said, patting the horse’s neck. “Ye’ll be feeling better soon.”
    • Patrick & Sarah – 109 words – His boss stepped out of one of the other stalls and nodded at Patrick. “You’ve been working hard lately, Bailey. If the plowing’s all done, why don’t you take off tomorrow? I’m sure there’s something waiting for you in town.”
    • Jacob & Matthew – 102 words – Jacob shook his head, though, smiling a little bit to himself. He had only played a couple hands of cards before making his way up to the room Matthew had rented, hoping no one would connect the two of them going into the same room. “Pa was expecting me back in town today. And I wouldn’t want to miss the wedding. Those friends of Adam’s show yet?”
    • Midas’ Daughter – 143 words – She nearly screamed as she spun around. Then, put a hand over her chest when she saw Flip. His face was fuzzed with that reddish-blond hair that fell slightly into his eyes. She had the urge to run her palm over the scruff, but she quickly squashed it. Not that he’d appreciate it. He’d made that clear years ago. “Don’t tell me you don’t do the same,” she said. “I’ve heard you.” *You might be surprised by what he wants, Calla. 😉
    • Dougal & Shae – 191 words – “What the bloody hell does that have to do with anything?” Dougal didn’t know where Donovan was heading with this. Or what any of it had to do with him.
    • Hawk – 217 words – Still I’d take it while I could get it. Just like I’d take Devil for as long as he still wanted me.*Oh, don’t worry, Hawk, I’m sure that’s going to be for a good long time.
    • Hang On – 143 words – He turned his head to look at me, and I thought I saw something flash through his eyes. Then, he was stepping away. I must have imagined it. I really needed to stop doing that.
    • Roman – 138 words – “He saw his sister murdered. It might be his way of grieving.”
    • Mason & Lila – 148 words – Mason glanced over at his father who was holding one end of the wire as Mason unwound it from the spool, attaching some to the next post. They should have replaced this section of the fence last year, before it ever fell down. At least the cows had been in a different section when it did collapse, so they hadn’t lost any.
    • Mike & Fadil – 113 words – “Of course,” Fadil said. His voice sounded rough, like it was being dragged over rocks. Mike shook himself. What was his problem? He was like any other man. And he was a customer. One who was only here for his mother, so didn’t need Mike hitting on him.  *but he might like that, Mike. 😉

  • Read: 31 books – 21/31, 8 this week

Writing Wednesday: Scattered

This week started out pretty good. I got all my writing done by lunchtime on Monday and even got a 1 mile+ walk in during that time(and my legs felt about dead after having to climb back up the hill to our house). I’m hoping to get 2-3 walks in a week for right now. Of course the kids only have about 3.5 weeks of school left and then I’ll have to figure out what to do. We may be able to walk down to the free beach at the lake, but I have to clock the mileage still(I don’t think it’s much more than a mile). I may do that on my next walk.

Tuesday I had a serious lack of focus. Not sure why. I just felt completely scattered. I did still manage to almost everything done before the kids got home from school. Only had to finish typing chapter 18 of In the Moonlight(it’s a longer one) up into scrivener and type up Jayla’s back story(wrote it by hand first). I still managed to finish them by dinnertime. Today I’m still feeling scattered, but instead of trying to force my mind to focus, I’m going with it. I have all my projects open and am bouncing between them. I’ve already managed to get my side projects done(those are usually the last I work on for the day).

And now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday!! So, it’s time for another snippet.  Still working on Not Meant to Be. While still with Denise, Toby got a call from Isaac that Jonas was attacked while in the park and he’s in the hospital. So, we’re there with him now and all the thoughts going on in his head. Tereza is Toby’s half-sister, their mom abandoned her when she was a few years old, and the two of them have just recently figured out their connection(that happened in Carlos’ story). Edward married Toby’s mom when Toby was about fourteen and adopted Toby. He was killed during a mugging about ten years before this, and Toby was one of the officers that responded to the call.  For today, I have 13 paragraphs(5+1+7).

Toby backed away from the counter, but he couldn’t sit. What if it was worse than Isaac had thought? What if his brother was bleeding out right now and there was nothing they could do to save him? He almost thought he felt a hand on his shoulder. It felt like Edward’s. But, he knew that wasn’t possible. Still, he heard Edward’s voice in his head. “This isn’t your fault, Tobias. Not everything bad that happens is your fault. Be strong for your mama.”
The same words Edward had said to him that day while they waited for the ambulance to get there. “I tried,” he whispered. “I’ve tried to be everything you wanted me to be.”
“Toby?”
He spun around at the soft voice, surprised to see Tereza there. “What are you doing here?”
She glanced around then seemed to relax when she saw it was just him. He wished she knew how much that hurt. His mom was trying, but Tereza didn’t seem to want to give her a chance. “Denise called and told me what happened. Well, what she knew anyway. She wanted to be here but said you told her to stay put.”
He glanced away, his hands balling into fists at his sides. “She’s better off away from me. I can’t put her in danger.”
“Idiot,” Tereza said, shoving against his shoulder. “I told her I’d call you one, but I’ll do it for myself too. You really think she wants to be kept at a distance from you?”
“It’s what’s best,” he said. “She deserves better than me.”
Tereza pressed her fingers into his shoulder but didn’t bother pushing this time. “I’d call you an idiot again, but I don’t think that’s a strong enough word for you. Why do you think there’s a better man out there than you? Besides Carlos, of course.”
Toby snorted at that. “Isn’t that obvious? I’m not much better than a screw-up. I made so many bad decisions. If it wasn’t for Edward, I would have gone right back to it. And then I couldn’t even save him. I can’t protect Denise. I couldn’t even keep my brother safe. He’s in there now probably because of me. What good am I?”
“Mijo,” his mother’s broken voice came from the doorway. Tereza stiffened, but she didn’t back away. “Tobias. Do not speak of yourself that way.”
“Mama, this is my fault. He said it was a message for me. If not for me, Jonas would be perfectly fine right now. If I was a better man, the man Edward wanted me to be, I’d be able to keep Denise safe and stop thinking about taking her to bed.”
His face warmed at admitting that, but his mother only smiled, brushing some hair back from his face. “Edward wanted everything for you. He saw the good man behind all the bitterness and anger and hurt. He helped bring that man out of you. He would not be disappointed in the man in front of me. The only thing that would hurt him is you taking so much on yourself. The mistakes of your past aren’t any worse than mine,” she said with a quick glance toward Tereza. “He was so proud of you, mijo. He wouldn’t want this.”

Sunday Summary: Mother’s Day

He doesn’t really fit under the coffee table anymore, just don’t try to tell him

So, it’s Mother’s Day. I don’t have a whole lot to say about that. I have a pretty good relationship with my mother. We don’t always see eye-to-eye on things. But, she’s always supported me. There was a time I took her for granted, when I was so sure I’d rather go live with my dad. After spending three weeks with him one summer, I’m glad that one never to pass. I actually have a lot more mixed feelings when it comes to father’s day.

My husband brought home a new computer chair on Friday, so I can finally move back to my desk for my writing.  The girl brought me home a chocolate bar from school with a special wrapper on it.  Then, we went out and got  Chinese for dinner and I got a flower there(they were handing them out to I think every woman who came in, even if she didn’t have kids with her).  And we got groceries. Saturday the husband was helping to teach a dive class at the school’s swimming pool. Our church was also having a work day, and my mil took the kids with her to help with that(they wanted to go), so I had the house to myself for a few hours. Then, we went to my sister’s for my niece’s 14th birthday. Can’t believe she’s 14 already. I can still remember holding her after she born. And when we got home, we finally got the kids’ “new” swingset put up.

Today, they’re planning to take me out for breakfast(I’m shooting for Ihop if they’re not too busy. strawberry banana pancakes. yum) and ice cream at one of the local places later. Other than that, I mostly plan to read for the day. And try to remember to send my mom a text sometime(she knows me enough to not expect an actual phone call).

As for how this week has gone, see below:

Plotting

  • Still Burning finish Story Toolkit, Outline – finished Act 3 beat sheet, Act 4 beat sheet 13/13 sections of Story Toolkit done, Outlined through Act 1. I figure I’ll update outline as I get to each act so I don’t go so far off course. I do have all the chapters and scenes set up, though.
  • Jayla’s Story(Gilbert, Co #7) brainstorm, character back stories, plot summaryget through Story Toolkit: Supporting Characters – got the brainstorming done.

Writing

  • Not Meant to Be – Add 53000 words/28 scenes to finish 1st draft – 11083 words/13 scenes finished this month, 6407 words/7 scenes this week
    • Toby brushed hair off Jonas’ forehead. “I have to go. Mom’s going to take you home. I’ll come check on you there.” And he really hoped his brother would be able to describe this guy for them. He’d made a mistake going after Toby’s family, and Toby was ready to prove it to him.
  • Side Projects – Add 4400 words between all projects – 4997/4400 words, 3004 words this week
    • Midas’ Daughter – 134 words – This was an unusual indulence. To be able to move around without anyone having an eye on her. She moved straight to Ariadne’s stall. “Hey, girl,” she said as the horse huffed softly. “I know it’s early. But, I’ve missed you.”
    • Roman – 128 words – Roman would have argued away the inciting a riot charge, but Toby said he deserved it. Roman didn’t understand why. Yes, he’d done wrong, but there was more haunting him than carrying a gun he shouldn’t have and following his fellow gang members into this fight.
    • Mike & Fadil – 322 words – “You do that, Mike,” his boss said, and he was pretty sure there was laughter in the man’s voice. Mike decided to ignore that and went back out to face Fadil.
    • Dougal & Shae – 107 words – “What do you know? Not my sister. I do know her. She’s been thinking of you, whether she’ll ever admit it or not.” *Oh, Donovan, you meddler.
    • Mason & Lila – 532 words – But, Mason lifted her hand. “Let me see,” he said. Then, his lips brushed over the tips of her fingers on her right hand.
    • Hang On – 118 words – I’d dreamed too many night of having my arms around him. But, not quite like this. Not when he had someone else under his skin.
    • Jacob and Matthew – 141 words – “Barrett,” he greeted his friend. “I wasn’t sure whether to expect you in town.”
    • Hawk – 870 words – Damon’s hand pressed against my hip. And I realized it didn’t matter who it was. As long as he only came after me and not anyone else I cared about. Especially not Damon.
    • Patrick & Sarah – 105 words – “Talking to the beasts again, Bailey? You do know they’re too stupid to understand what you’re sayin’, right?”
    • Preggers – 433 words – Marika managed to get to her feet and held a hand down to Lyndi. Warmth rushed through her at the touch, but she pushed aside that feeling. Lyndi had been married. To a man. Marika doubted the knowledge she found Lyndi attractive would be welcome. Although from the blush staining the other woman’s cheeks, that may not be a conclusion she should jump to.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 114 words – The lad sneered at him then finally swung his leg over the saddle and dropped to the ground. “Was any of that even in English?” *It all was, but Tavin’s Scottish accent does get thick sometimes.

Editing

  • Flames of Renewal – CP Edits
  • In the Moonlight – Transfer from OneNote(on my Surface) to Scrivener(on my laptop) – 27 chapters(there’s actually 32, counting the epilogue, but I’d already started it before) – 11/27 chapters typed up.
  • Snow White Twist – Beta edits, rename, & submitcompiled notes from 1 beta reader to the main document(so I can put them all in one place when I get them back from other reader) for 4/8 chapters(1st 2 chapters done last month). Have a potential title for it as well. Still simmering on that, though.
  • Dance with the Devilread through, make revisions, & polish I’ve read through 10/10 chapters. Applied 55/80 comments(not counting areas I highlighted, though those will be fixed as I go through, too)
  • Beta Read – Read 58 chapters(total of 73, but that’s what I have left) & return to author – 26/58,

    • Mysterious Situation – part of Hawk’s story
    • Still Welcome – part of my “Preggers” short story

Writing Wednesday: Late Start

I got a late start to Monday. Woke up at 6 when husband’s phone rang. He was supposed to be to work at 6. Oops. So, the kids were already getting up for the morning by that point. The boy didn’t want to get dressed. I told him he had to anyway. “You’re such a, such a, such a, so mean” I guess I’m so mean, he couldn’t come up with a name for it. He might be an early riser, but he’s not a very happy morning person.

I got back from getting them on the bus and can’t find my mouse. It had been sitting on the arm of the couch the night before. Not there. Didn’t fall into the side of the couch. Not on the floor right beside it. Looked around for about 5 minutes before I finally found it behind the little rocker next to the couch(my guess: the cat knocked it off while jumping up or down from back of couch). Then, I go to write my Story a Day piece and see that the post I wrote on Sunday no longer appears to be on my blog. Instead it was showing an older draft of it in my draft folder. I was able to find what I’d posted in the revisions of that, not sure why it kicked back to the older version. But, I got it restored and posted again.

But, yeah, it was a day. And I usually look forward to Mondays. but, I di manage to catch up and have everything except my reading goal done by dinnertime.

Tuesday I was awake around 3:30 and at my computer around 4:15. A lot more like normal. Wednesday I slept until 5:30. So not too much done before kids got up this morning. I’m usually a lot more consistent in my waking up than this.

But, anyway, to get on with things: It’s Wednesday!! Which means WiPPet Time. *makes up a WiPPet Dance* Trust me, be glad you can’t see that. 😉 I have 7 paragraphs(5+10-1-7). You might remember from snippets of Shed Some Light(Carlos & Tereza’s story) that Adriane was Carlos’ little sister. Who was killed about 20 years before this. And Toby had some history with her, too.

“What are you going to do with me?” he asked, his voice coming out rough. “Since you’ve got me where you want me.”
“Explore,” she said on an exhale. “I’ve always wanted to explore you.”
She slid her fingers over to his side, where she could see ink scrawled from his hip to the bottom of his ribs. She shifted so she could read what it said. The first words were in Spanish and with the script she couldn’t quite make it out. But the words below it had her fingers stilling for a moment. Adriane and Edward. She glanced back up at him. “These are the people you’ve lost.”
“Yeah,” he choked out.
She traced the first name again. “You really loved her, didn’t you?”
“As much as a thirteen-year-old punk can love someone.”
She rose over him again and pressed the tips of two fingers to his lips. “Don’t talk about yourself like that. You weren’t any worse than Jared or Carlos. Yet they aren’t the ones denying themselves love or anything else.” Love? Really, Denise? You are going to send the man running again if you talk like that.

Writing Wednesday: Pulling Ahead

This has been quite a week already. In a good way. My word count may not be too high since Monday I only had to finish a scene for Not Meant to Be, and I didn’t count my words for the Story a Day piece(maybe I should, but I didn’t). But, by the time I went to bed Monday night, I already had about half of Tuesday’s goals checked off, including most of the chores.

Lilacs are out(please ignore the dirty windows, it was raining out, so I couldn’t get a good picture)

On Sunday I’d finally finished moving the rest of the wood from the yard out to our wood pile. Good thing too, because it poured down rain almost all of Monday. So, I wouldn’t have gotten any of it done then.

I do not know when my name became so popular, but I’m seeing it in so many books lately.

Tuesday I looked around the living room, trying to decide if there was any surface I could use as a makeshift standing desk. Rather than sitting pretty much all day(other than when I’m doing chores or taking the dog for a walk–which it’s been raining all week and that hasn’t happened). I’m sure I’ll be plugging it back into the TV and sitting at some points during the day, either if my knee starts bothering me and probably I’ll start out there first thing in the morning. But, at least when the kids are home/awake, this set-up should work to get some more writing in. I just had to shut the touchpad off on my laptop so I’m not accidentally hitting it and moving the cursor while I’m typing. And the ‘d’ key doesn’t like to work(which is only 1 reason I’d been using the wireless keyboard and plugging it into the tv- and a different monitor when it was on my desk).

My new work area(all my yarn is inside the cabinet).

Now, for WiPPet Wednesday!!! I finished Playing with Fire last week. So, this week I’m back to working on Not Meant to Be. I hadn’t written anything on this since February, so I had to spend some time going back and reading through what I had. This is an earlier scene with Toby at his mom’s for dinner. He’s about 33, but his younger brother(and sister, but she’s not really in this scene) are only 16. Their father died about 10 years earlier, and he’s rather protective of them. I have 11 paragraphs(2+0+17-5-3)

Toby leaned back in his chair and stared across the table at the boy. He had his head turned toward Jonas, and they seemed deep into an intense conversation about…hell, Toby wasn’t even sure. But, he hadn’t often seen his brother light up so much.
The other kid seemed to be about the same age, with dark brown hair. Not the near black that his and his siblings were, but something with shades of gold through it. He blew a breath out. He didn’t know why he was being so fanciful. It was brown. His eyes, behind the glasses he kept pushing up on his nose, were somewhere between brown and gold. He seemed nice and had been perfectly polite throughout dinner. Jonas definitely could do worse.
Still, a part of Toby wanted to run a check on the kid. He wouldn’t abuse his power, or Jonas’ trust, like that, though. No matter how strong the urge was. “So, Isaac,” he said, bringing the boys’ attention to him.
“Toby,” Jonas said, “don’t. Just don’t.”
“What?” he asked innocently. “I’m not allowed to speak to my brother’s new friend?”
He saw the boy grab Jonas’ hand and squeeze, the wide bracelets around his wrists clank together. His nails were short but painted a soft blue. “It’s okay, Jo,” he said, smirking back across the table. “I think I can handle an interrogation. Especially on a full stomach. The enchiladas were delicious, Mrs. Pedera.”
Toby just barely held back a laugh. The kid was pretty charming. His mother smiled at the boys. “Thank you. I’ll clean up while you two chat. Tobias, you can help me.”
Ah, crap. That usually meant he was in trouble.
But, he stood up from the table and followed his mom into the kitchen, carrying a stack of plates with silverware thrown on top of them. he managed to set them on the counter before his mother turned to him. “You need to leave your brother’s friend alone,” she told him.
“What?” he asked, trying to look innocent. “What did I do? I was only going to ask him a couple questions.”
“He is not one of your criminals, Tobias. He’s a sweet sixteen-year-old boy who doesn’t have it all that easy at home. That’s why he spends so much time in that park where Jonas met him. He is always welcome in this house. I don’t want you to make him feel otherwise.”

Plotting

  • Still Burning – finish Story Toolkit, Outline – finished Subplot sheet & event brainstorming sheets. 3/13 sections of Story Toolkit done
  • Jayla’s Story(Gilbert, Co #7) – get through Story Toolkit: Supporting Characters

Writing

  • Not Meant to Be – Add 53000 words/28 scenes to finish 1st draft – 1799 words/3 scenes finished this month, 1799 words/3 scenes finished for this week
  • Side Projects – Add 4400 words between all projects – 658/4400 words, 658 words this week
    • Patrick & Sarah – 154 words – He brought his attention back to the path of the horses. His boss would be none too happy with a crooked row. Not that the man typically even raised his voice. Not for anything less than an atrocious misdeed. And anyone committing one of those, found himself set instantly off the farm.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 119 words – The lad glared at Tavin as he slid his gloves off but didn’t make any attempt to get down from the saddle. “You cannot tell me what to do. You work for me.” *Tavin does not seem to be making friends. Though this little shit doesn’t deserve to be friends with him 😉
    • Mason & Lila – 251 words – “He’ll come around,” she said softly. Then added, “Eventually.”Yeah. Eventually. Like probably the day after Mason’s funeral. But, Mason didn’t say that to Lila. He didn’t like to feel like he was pulling her between him and her father. He knew he’d always come out the loser there.
    • Midas’ Daughter – 134 words – But, she wasn’t a business interest. She was his daughter. Why couldn’t he seem to understand that?

Sunday Summary: End of April

It’s the end of April, which means the end of Camp NaNoWriMo, the end of the A-Z challenge, and for me the end of 2 WiPs. Yep, two. I finished Playing with Fire on Friday. And I actually finished Staring at the Sun earlier in the week, though the last scene just went up on my blog today as the final post for the A-Z Challenge. I don’t really have much else to say here, so I’ll get right to it.

Plotting

  • Heart of Christmas – finish Story Toolkit, Outline in scrivener
  • Still BurningBrainstorm, Character back stories, plot summary, through Story Toolkit: Romance Arc –  Finished the protagonist sheets for both main characters, the antagonist, & supporting characters, character arc, and the romance arc. 9/22 sections for the Toolkit. I wrote another Stream of Consciousness post with these characters that gives just a hint of Jess’ issues coming into the story

Writing

  • Playing with Fire – Add 73000 words/66 scenes(some of these include bits from my Just Jot It posts in January, they may be fleshed out to scenes of their own or merged into other scenes, but I’m counting them all for right now). – 53714 words/70 finished scenes for the month, 11270 words/15 scenes this week. I merged two planned scenes together then cut out the last 2 I had planned before the epilogue because it seemed like they wouldn’t really be needed, and I could accomplish what I had planned for them in that epilogue. I ended up about 20k below what I’d planned, but I may end up adding more during revisions.
    • “I don’t give a damn about the world,” Silas said. And Jeremiah was in perfect agreement about that. “Only what we think, what we feel matters. Out there we can just all be friends or however you want to pair us up. I’ll be the third wheel to them forever if that’s what it takes. Just don’t make any of us choose in here.”
  • Side Projects – add 4000 words between all projects. – 5363/4000 words for the month, 1598 words this week.
    • Preggers – 264 words – But, she did go in, her gaze scanning until she found Marika again. She was smiling at another woman who had a hand resting on a rather large baby bump. Something moved through Lyndi at that. She wasn’t sure if it was the sight of what her future held for her, or that smile on Marika’s face. One a part of her wished was aimed her way.
    • Dougal & Shae – 114 words – Maybe if he figured that out, he’d be able to stop obsessing about it. And her. And maybe not, he thought as he saw the man walking toward the bar. *What could Shae’s brother want with him now?
    • Hang On – 102 words – It bothered me probably more than it should. And definitely more than I’d ever admit. Especially to him.
    • Tavin & Haiwee  – 115 words – And from the rough sounds from down below, not treating the horse in the best way. It wasn’t anything unusual. And like every time he saw it, Tavin wanted to thrash the lad the way he did the horse.
    • Mason & Lila – 211 words – Mason knew the truth without Brian saying anything. His father hadn’t allowed his mother to give Brian money, or he’d spent it all on alcohol over the weekend. Either way, his friend didn’t have it now. Mason took the cup of fruit from his tray and set it in front of Brian along with his spoon without a word. It wasn’t much, but he knew Brian wouldn’t accept more. *I already knew how bad Brian’s past was, and I still want to give him a big hug, and maybe a good meal.
    • Midas’ Daughter – 124 words – Her boots slid slightly in the wet grass, but she managed to find her footing again. She usually didn’t come out until the sun had risen enough to dry most of the dew from the grass. But, if she’d waited longer to leave her room, she’d have to miss yet one more day of riding. And she might truly start to lose her mind.
    • Patrick & Sarah – 111 words – Which meant no more trips to town until it was done. His work still wouldn’t be over, though it would be less intense then. Which would give him time for those trips. And hopefully some courting. If Sarah would have him.
    • Roman – 177 words – “You have to,” she insisted. “He didn’t do anything. Please,” she said, her voice wavering on the word. “Please help him. He doesn’t deserve to rot in jail. He saw his sister murdered, isn’t that punishment enough?”
    • Mike & Fadil – 145 words – Fadil Asker pulled his car into the small parking lot beside the town’s pharmacy. He looked back down at the list his mother had given to him before leaving the house. He was sure this was only the first of many errands she’d have him running.  *I don’t think he’s going to mind this errand pretty soon. hehe.
    • Hawk – 128 words – He cursed to himself and turned back to his bike. He didn’t know why his father had been on his mind so much lately. The man had made his feeling about Hawk clear years ago. They hadn’t had anything to do with each other since.
    • Jacob & Matthew – 107 words – But, he’d needed to make sure no one saw him leave the room Matthew had rented the night before. He knew Matthew would go back to sleep and leave in a couple more hours. No one should realize they’d left the same room with so much time between.

Editing

  • Stained Blood – Adjust chapters(some are really long after adding new scenes in), double-check for missing details, 50 search & destroy items, send to readers –  50/50 search & destroy items(cut 1277 words). And I got it sent out.
  • Snow White Twistrename, polish 48 search & destroy items, send to readers –I’ve already gotten it back from one of the beta readers and started going through the notes.
  • Flames of Renewal – CP Edits once I get it back – Talked to CP on Sunday. She said she should have this to me this week.
  • In the Moonlight – transfer from One Note to Scrivener(on two different computers)
  • Beta Read: I figured this was the best place to put this. I’ve read 15/73 chapters

Reading

  • Listen: 5 books – 7/5,  3 this week
    • Emperor’s Edge(Lindsay Buroker) – I’ve actually read all these books, but I’ve been wanting to do a re-read, so I decided to start getting them in audio(which are only $1.99 since I have the ebooks). I’ll listen to these when I finish my other audiobook for the week. Loved it as much as the times I’ve read it.
    • Tracks of Her Tears(Melinda Leigh) – started this Monday morning. Finished it Monday afternoon. It was a short one(part of a series of novellas). Really enjoyed it.
    • Dark Currents(Lindsay Buroker) – Started this Tuesday morning. Finished it Friday morning. This is the second book in the Emperor’s Edge series.
    • A Thousand Pieces of You(Claudia Gray) – Started this Friday morning. It’s my second time listening to it. I finally got the second book in the series, and it had been a while since I listened to this one, so decided on a re-listen before I start the next one.
  • Read: 30 books – 30/30,  9 this week
    • Hammer of the Gods(Christina Ochs) – this is book 3 in her Desolate Empire series. I got the boxed set, but I’ve already read the first 2 separately, so I jumped right to this one on my phone. I’ll read it in the between moments. I’m on Chapter 106/166(If I counted right. The chapters are labeled with POV characters’ names instead of numbers).
    • A Rogue by Any Other Name(Sarah MacLean) – Started this last Tuesday afternoon. Finished it Saturday afternoon. Liked it but not sure if I’d continue the series if I hadn’t bought the next two books as well at a library sale.
    • Wild Card(Mari Carr) – Started this Sunday morning. Finished it Friday night. Enjoyed it.
    • Causing Havoc(Lori Foster) – Started this Monday morning. Finished it Thursday night. I’ve read her other MMA-inspired books that are basically spin-offs from this one, but I’m just now getting to this original series.
    • When You Got A Good Thing(Kait Nolan) – Started this Tuesday morning. Finished it Tuesday evening. Loved it so much. Think I’m going to love this series as much as I have her Wishful one.
    • The Crown’s Game(Evelyn Skye) – Started this Wednesday morning. Finished it Wednesday night. Wasn’t too sure at first, but I ended up getting really into it. And the end…gah, it just ripped  y heart out. The next book comes out in less than three weeks.
    • Out of Frame(Megan Erickson) – Started this Thursday morning. Finished it Thursday evening. Loved it so much(like the rest of the series, and pretty much everything she’s written). I bought the next book right away.
    • Going Hard(Cari Quinn) – Started this Friday afternoon. Finished it Friday evening. Enjoyed it.
    • On the Edge of Gone(Corrine Duyvis) – Read this Saturday morning. Liked it, but didn’t feel all that drawn in.
    • Dazzle Me(Juliana Haygert) – Read this one Saturday, too. Enjoyed it.
