Writing Wednesday: End of the Month

In Sunday’s post, I mentioned my husband’s cousin(also our real estate agent) whose 14 year old daughter had gone missing Friday night. I did say I would keep everyone updated, so: She was found safe Monday evening. All the way in Kentucky! Apparently she left with a 16 year old boy and an older woman(I’d thought they said she was in her 20s, then I saw 32). The woman was found in Florida and both kids were in Kentucky. Those are really all the details I have. The girl’s parents went to Kentucky Monday night to pick her up. I don’t really know any more than that, just thankful she is home safe.

Personally, things are going pretty well this week. Making my way through the final scenes in Whatever It Takes. Finished the first draft!! Figured out the best way to work on editing too much of characters being “in their heads” in Flames of Renewal. Working on beat sheets for Green Hills & Smoky Fields 2, and have side project goals met for the month. I should have almost all of this month’s goals finished by the end of the day. Whatever I don’t will flow into next month.

Those goals I don’t have figured out yet, but should later today. I will have them up for Sunday’s post, though.

And now, since it’s Wednesday, that means it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday again!! This week I’m picking up almost right from where I left off last week, only leaving out Isaac’s musings about Arcelia’s reaction to his comment. Now, he’s off to find Jonas, and I have the next 12 sentences(2+2+8).

“Are you just going to stand there all day, Isaac, or are you going to come joined me?”

He took a step closer. “How did you know it was me? You never even opened your eyes.”

“You’ve got a certain presence about you. Changes the air in here.” One eye cracked open, and a grin slipped over his face. “Or I heard you speaking to my sister. That could be it, too.”

Isaac laughed and moved over to the couch, leaning over to press his lips to Jonas’. Jonas reached up and slipped a hand into Isaac’s hair. Isaac sighed against Jonas’ lips then rested his forehead against Jonas’.

A nice little moment here. But how long is it going to last?

Sunday Summary: Set Back

Hopefully not a major set back, though. Our house was officially listed on the market Wednesday morning. Within 2 hours, we had someone interested in looking at it. Had the showing set for Saturday between noon & 1. So we scrambled a bit to try to get the house in order. At least as much as we could. Saturday morning, we get a message from the real estate agent(who also happens to be husband’s cousin), that the showing was cancelled. We thought that was on the buyer’s end, and we were disappointed. Even though I know better, I was playing through all these good scenarios in my head. Now, they’re all deflated. We find out a bit later, that it was the agent who needed to cancel it because his teenage daughter had gone missing during the night. That definitely leveled off my disappointment. Now just hoping they find her.

Anything else I have to say seems kind of petty in light of that. But, I kind of switched up how I’m looking at my main writing goal. Thursday, as I was finishing up a scene, I realized after that I only had 8 more scenes left in Whatever It Takes. And there were four more weekdays in the month. So, two scenes a day would have it done by the end of the month. So instead of an actual word count goal, I’m focusing on finishing those two scenes each day. So far(1 day), so good.

WeWriWa: “Lovebirds”

Welcome back to another visit with the Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop for anyone who likes to write. This picks up right where last week’s snippet ended.

Icarus laughed and patted my shoulder. “This is how rumors start around here, even if you don’t mean them to.” He glanced over at Trace. “What did they say?”

Trace was still regaining the color in his face. He took a deep breath and another before finally looking back at his father. “Both are available. Wraith said he’d be out at his bike when the lovebirds are ready to go.” He held up his hands as he turned to me, but he didn’t wipe away the grin. “His words, not mine, I swear.”

Yeah, I’m not coming up with any clever questions this morning, so I’ll just leave it there. 😉

Our house officially went on the market Wednesday morning. 2 hours later we had someone interested in seeing it. They’re coming out this afternoon to look at it. *Fingers crossed* we get some good news. Trying not to let my hopes get up too high, though.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday: Door

Bobby stood in the doorway, just staring into the room. That was his son in there. It was hard to believe. He didn’t look like the boy Bobby remembered.

“Are you going to go in there or just hulk in the doorway?”

Bobby turned his head to look at the man who had snuck up on him. It had been a long time since he’d allowed himself to let anyone do that. “Sam,” he said, recognizing the man. Though, he didn’t quite look like the man Bobby had just seen with Linda a couple weeks earlier. This scruffy, bleary-eyed man wouldn’t have found his way into Bobby’s ex-wife’s heart.

“I bet John would like to see you,” Sam said.

Bobby shook his head. “He hasn’t seen me in nearly six years. It was better that way. I was trying to protect them.”

“You didn’t,” Sam snapped. “You hurt them. He worshipped you and then suddenly you were gone. He didn’t understand that you just couldn’t walk out of the prison and come visit him. And you never tried to explain to him. No, you left that all to Linda. You left him to be picked on at school about whether he got the fire bug gene, too. If he was going to set things on fire.”

Bobby winced at that. He’d screwed up so much in his life. He had deserved his punishment. His son hadn’t, though.

“I wanted to hate you,” Sam continued. “But, she never did. I never understood how you couldn’t even fight for her.”

“Because she deserved a lot better than me. She deserved everything, and I couldn’t give it to her. She deserved you, Sam. They all did. And it wasn’t right for me to try to hold them down. So, I let them go.”

“You’re a fool,” Sam muttered. “You threw it all away and for what? She’s still dead. And they have no one now.”

“They have you,” Bobby told him. “She’d want you to take care of them. And to stop drinking.”

“So, you’re just going to walk away?” Sam asked as Bobby started to do just that. “Not even let them know you were here.”

“I don’t see what good it would do. I don’t want a place in their lives if it’s only going to hurt them.” He just needed to close that door and lock it. Better for all of them that way.

“And what if it doesn’t?” Sam asked. “What if it helps them to see the change you’ve made to the path you were on. What if they need you, too?”

Bobby closed his eyes, as if that was a shield against the darts those words became. He wasn’t sure he could believe it was enough. But, he wanted to try.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was “door”. We were supposed to write about a door we walked through that wasn’t our own. Instead I wrote about a character not walking through a door, both figurative and literal. 😉 These characters showed up in the first book in my Flames series and then kind of disappeared. I’m thinking of trying to write them back into the series, and John may eventually have his own story. I wrote a little piece yesterday about these characters, too.
Fiction Friday: “Swan Back In”
“What makes you think you can swan back into our lives and tell us what to do?”
“I’m not trying to tell you what to do,” Bobby said.
“It sure sounds like it,” John said, his arms crossed in front of him.
Bobby leaned back against the couch. John looked so much like Linda, but he acted just like Bobby used to. And Bobby knew he’d had a hand in the anger that rode in every line of the boy’s face.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know I’ve said it several times already, and it doesn’t make anything better. But, I am sorry. I screwed up, and I paid for it. You and Adam shouldn’t have, though.”
“You were out for more than a year before Mom died. Why didn’t you ever come to see us?” There was a hard bite to the boy’s voice, but his lip was trembling.
Damn it. That was a question he never wanted to have to answer. But, he didn’t want to lie. it was never something he enjoyed doing, and especially not to his oldest son. “I signed away my rights when I went to prison. I wanted your mom and both of you boys to have a chance at a better life. And when I got out, I promised her I wouldn’t drag you down.” He saw shocked pain on John’s face now and swore to himself. “Do not blame your mother,” he said. “It was the right thing when she didn’t know if I was going to stay on the right side of the law.”
“But, you have?”
He wished John didn’t have to ask him that, but he couldn’t really blame the boy, either. “Yes,” he answered truthfully. “I have.”
John nodded after a moment. “Good. I’ll see if Adam wants to see you. It’s up to him, though. I won’t make him do anything he doesn’t want.”
“I wouldn’t ask that of him, either.” But, he was glad he was getting a chance of at least being a part of his sons’ lives again. Now, as long as he didn’t screw it up again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you’ve read Flames of Redemption, you may recognize these characters. And at least one of them may make a reappearance in the series.

Writing Wednesday: On the Market

Our house, that is. The real estate agent came out yesterday afternoon, we signed some stuff, and he took some pictures. And put a sign up in our front yard. So, it’s official now. Fingers crossed this won’t be too long of a process.

Yesterday, I didn’t get much writing done. I did outline Act 4 of Whatever It Takes, and no new words. I did get some other stuff done, but my word count was definitely low. Hoping to make up for that today and the rest of the week.

It’s Wednesday, though, which means it’s WiPPet time again!! This is the next morning after the scene I shared last week. Isaac has shown back up and is talking to Jonas’ twin sister, Arcelia here. He used to consider her a friend, but she hasn’t really spoken to him since he broke with Jonas. But, right now she’s worried about Jonas. I’ve got 5 paragraphs(2+2+1) today.

Arcelia shrugged. “He says he’s fine. He’s always fine.” She blew out a breath. “It’s good you’re here. I have to get going, but I didn’t really want to leave him alone. He’s eaten, so that’s something, I guess.”

“I’ll take care of him,” Isaac said. “Don’t worry.”

She smirked at him. “I’m sure you will. I’ll leave you to that. I don’t want the details.”

He shook his head. “Why don’t you take that dirty mind and use it on a boyfriend. Or girlfriend.”

Something passed over her face, and her smile looked pasted on. “I’ll leave that nonsense to the rest of you lovebirds. I’ve got better things to do.”

Arcelia has been telling me some things. Still working some of it out. Maybe *she’ll* actually wait her turn.

Sunday Summary: Weathering a Rollercoaster

…of weather. It’s gone from snow, to almost balmy temperatures, then back to snow. Seriously? This is getting old. I’d actually rather it just stay cold for a while than these ups and downs.

But, it’s been a good week regardless of the weather. I haven’t quite met my main writing goal for the week, but I’ve gotten a lot closer than last week. And I’ve finished up just about all my other weekly writing/editing goals. So, that’s a good feeling.

And last night we went out with a couple friends. Got dinner at Olive Garden then went to a local comedy club to see a show. We hardly stopped laughing from the time it started. That felt good, too.

Here’s hoping for another good week.
