Writing Wednesday: A Better Start

So, this week has started off better than the last one. At least as it comes to interruptions to my routine. Word count is roughly the same(actually a little lower because I didn’t write anything Monday that I count towards the goal). Monday was mostly spent on reading and getting stuff done around the house(I got almost all the laundry done in 1 day). Though I did work on getting beta notes for chapter 4 of Stained Blood copied into Scrivener. And during our daily afternoon sprint on Twitter, I worked on Jonas & Isaac(which I don’t count toward word goal because it’s all by hand).

Tuesday I made some good progress, particularly on side projects. And some progress on a couple main projects. I’m hoping to make even more progress today. I’ll get to more on that progress in a bit. But, first it’s WiPPet Wednesday!!! I’ve got more with Jonas & Isaac today. I have 8 paragraphs today(10-18). Jonas has been stopping by the youth center but it’s always been when Isaac isn’t around. Isaac and Konner are talking about that here.

“So what do you want me to do? Tell him you’re here by lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays? Or to stop stalking you?”

Isaac laughed. “You know that’s not what he’s doing. He just hasn’t figured out what to do with himself now that he isn’t a soldier. Anyway, you said he gave tips on setting up the soccer practices. And he stayed later Wednesday to talk to a few of the older boys. So, he’s helping. I don’t see a problem with him hanging around then.”

“That’s good to know,” Konner said, breaking into a grin. “Because he’s in the gym with some of the older kids right now. Last I knew, they were kicking a ball around, but that might have changed.”

Kicking a ball around? How was he managing that? And was it reminding him of all he’d lost? He dropped his bag behind the desk then started toward the area of the center that held the small gym. Konner chuckled behind him, the bastard. If he didn’t know better, he’d think Konner had kept Jonas here just for this reason.

The hell of it was, he just might have. Konner could be a sneaky son of a bitch when he thought it was necessary.

Not that it was right now. Of course.

He stepped into the gym and just stood for a moment. The kids were indeed kicking around a soccer ball. Derek stood on the other side of the room, hands on their hips, watching Jonas. Isaac wasn’t sure he could stop doing the same thing. Jonas was doing drills with the kids, from the bench. Calling out directions, throwing or kicking the ball to one of the kids, easily catching a ball that came his way.

He was in his element. And beautiful with it.

Oh, Isaac, you are so sunk. Might as well give in now. 😉 Not that I can make it that easy for them, of course.

Sunday Summary: The Askew Continues

Friday when I turned on my computer, it said Windows wanted to do an update. I figured, what the heck. I’d already put it off once. And it usually only takes a little while. Ha! 2 hours later! It finally finished. But, then when I tried to go to wordpress to read blogs I follow, a page comes up saying “A secure connection could not be established” or something like that. That was using Microsoft Edge, which I’ve used without a problem since installing Windows 10. I tried on Firefox and finally managed to get them to come up after much refreshing. Apparently this is going to become an issue(something about SSL certificates that I don’t really know anything about).

Saturday we went and got groceries, dropped the kids off at mother-in-law’s and came home so we could get ready. This was the first year our station for the motorcycle club we belong to has held a “Kickin’ Cancer” dinner/dance benefit. The ride we have in August raises funds for a local oncology center. This benefit was for the same thing but to spread it around to more than the “motorcycle crowd”. There weren’t a whole lot of people there this year, but hopefully the word will spread a bit more and that will change next year.

On our way to the benefit. And I was apparently not the only one who said #nodressesforme I counted a whole 2 dresses there 😉

This week was a bit off for me. I still made progress, just not nearly as much as I would like.

Writing Wednesday: Routine Askew

This past weekend was our town’s homecoming, which I talked a bit about on Sunday. Won’t rehash all that here. Saturday I also said good-bye to my wedding ring for about 2 weeks(engagement & wedding ring are fused together and engagement ring needs repaired). Feels very odd to be without the only piece of jewelry I ever really wear.

Last Friday, the kids came home with a note that one of the 5th grade teachers had passed away. Apparently he’d been battling cancer. Neither of my kids have had him(the girl is only in 4th grade now), so they don’t seem to be too affected by this. But, today will be an early dismissal because of the funeral. The kids also had Monday off, so this throws my routine off even more(and wow, that sounded really callous, but I didn’t know the guy either. Still I didn’t mean to sound heartless). Still, I have managed to make progress on just about all my goals this week.

And now, it’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday! So, I’ve got more from Jonas & Isaac’s story. I have 3 paragraphs(1+0+1+1=3).This is from the end of the next chapter and takes place the day after their kiss. Jonas stopped at the youth center where Isaac volunteers a lot of his time. And there was some flirting and sexual tension going on. But, now Isaac is leaving, too. The day before, he felt like someone was watching him when he left his house but brushed it off as paranoia. But, now:

When he stepped out of the center, he once again felt those eyes on him. He shook the feeling off, though. It had just been an emotional rollercoaster of a weekend. That’s why he felt so unsettled. Not because someone was watching him. Who would even want to?

No, he just needed to get back to his usual routine. Then, everything would go back to normal. The kiss and today’s visit from Jonas had just thrown him off. That’s all this was.

He was sure of it.

You absolutely sure, Isaac? Once can be brushed off, but twice? Maybe you’re not so paranoid because of your father’s release. (*Hint*: he’s not).

Sunday Summary: Homecoming

This weekend was our school’s homecoming. Football game Friday night(which we skipped because it was raining). Instead we went to the Moose club and had some really good chicken & biscuits(the week before was shrimp scampi, also very good). Saturday was the parade. Both my husband and son walked in it, with the huge flag. My husband walked at the front and my son at the back, pulling the box the flag would go back in at the end. Last year they did it in their bunker gear, this year they wanted them to wear uniforms. Usually we go to the library’s book sale after it, this year we didn’t(and that’s the only thing I really look forward to about the parade, but oh well).

Pulling the cart behind the flag.

Husband walking with some of the Explorers.

We went to get groceries, but first, husband dropped the girl and me at the mall so we went to the bookstore(she got a book, I didn’t. It is very odd for me to leave a bookstore with nothing). Then, after they came back for us, we decided to have my wedding ring inspected and cleaned(since it’s been…a while). They found a prong on the engagement ring had broken off, so we had it sent in to be fixed. This is only the second time in 12 years we’ve had something done for it(a few years back, they fused the engagement & wedding ring together because they were getting thin). But, now my hand feels very naked.

Keep running my thumb over my finger and freaking out for a moment because my ring is gone.

After we got groceries, we stopped in at the little wine store in that Walmart(which still feels odd to me. You couldn’t even buy alcohol in a regular store in PA until recently). My husband’s aunt works in there. I’m not much of a wine drinker(my mom bought us a bottle a couple Christmases ago, and it’s still sitting unopened on the counter), but I sampled some. it was good stuff. They have flavors like PB&J and chocolate strawberry. That just might change my mind about wine. 😉

Anyway, on to this week’s progress.

Writing Wednesday: Some Hope

Sunday we went out for breakfast for my husband’s birthday. After breakfast, he dropped the girl and me at Barnes & Noble. I got The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo(I haven’t started reading the stories yet, but just the pictures in the book are beautiful). The girl got the next two books in the series she’s been reading.Had an issue with the girl trying to smuggle a stuffed cat out in her sweatshirt pocket. Thankfully, I noticed while we were in line and told her she had to pay for it if she wanted it. While we waited for husband to come get us, we had a talk about how that is stealing and that is wrong. 10 years, and I didn’t think I’d have to have that talk. Hopefully won’t have to have it again.

Other than that, the day went pretty well. I took another box of books to the bookstore(and bought 2 new ones). Took some baby clothes to Once Upon a Child and made almost $12. They didn’t take very much, but at least that’s some extra spending money for me. And we’d thought we lost the boy’s wallet, but I finally found it. It had slipped into the back of his booster seat in the truck. *phew* And he got his first hunting permit(with the mentor permit, he can go, but he can’t carry the rifle while they’re walking and he has to be with an adult at all times). He’s excited about that.

And now it’s Wednesday, which means WiPPet Time! With all the awfulness in the world lately, I figured I’d share a more hopeful snippet. So, I’m skipping ahead a bit in Jonas & Isaac’s story. I have 5 paragraphs(10+4=14=1+4=5) from the end of Chapter 6. They’re at Jonas’ nephew’s birthday party. And Jonas is having some issues handling some things. Jonas went off to an empty room to get his mind to settle, and Isaac followed him. The first line is Isaac:

“No one expects you to right away. Well, except for you apparently. You always were harder on yourself than anyone else could be.”

Jonas’ lips tipped up. “Santiago used to say that, too.”

“You still miss him.”

“I do. We weren’t a couple for more than three years, but it hurts knowing I’ll never be able to just call him up again.”

Isaac couldn’t stop himself from reaching up to brush his fingers over Jonas’ cheek. Didn’t stop himself from leaning forward. He knew it was foolish, his mind kept screaming that at him. But, he still pressed his lips to Jonas’.

Ah, finally! 😀 Will it be smooth sailing ahead now?(Haha, Oh Fallon, you are funny.) 😉

Sunday Summary: New Month, New Round

The beginning of the new month actually falls on one of my blogging days. That works out real well. So, below I’ll have the wrap-up of the last month, goals for the new round and the new month.

Yesterday our fire department had a Fall Fest at the station. Some craft booths, a Chinese auction, food to eat(bag of popcorn was .25, soft pretzel & cheese was $2, pop for $1). It all went to aid the Explorers post that’s with the department. I hadn’t planned to go down(I think I’m still recovering from all the social time last weekend), but the kids wanted to. They had a good time and won some suckers in a balloon game.

    • Melanie & Garren – 67 words
  • Stretch: Write 50 pages on Jonas & Isaac project – 34/50 pages Off target

Editing:

  • Primary: Edit Stained Blood as I get chapters back – edited 3/3 scenes from Chapter 2. Found out OK has been in use since about 1839, but it wasn’t spelled out as okay until about 1929, so had to rephrase something. 🙂 Added 560 words. On Target
  • Secondary: Edit Flames of Renewal when I get it back – still waiting, but made contact with CP again. So hopefully will hear about this soon. 🙂
  • Stretch: Edit Preggers short story – Polished 49/49 items. Renamed this to ‘Mistaken Meeting’. Now, just to submit it.

Reading:

  • Primary: Read 30 books – 27/30 Fell Off Target
    • Of Dreams and Rust(Sarah Fine) – Started this Monday(9/4) morning. At 14%. Not sure if it’s because it’s been so long since I read the first book or what, but I find myself not really caring. So setting this aside until I finish the other books on this month’s list(or at least for the week). Then, I may try to pick it back up. Never got back to this and just…don’t care. So, officially setting it aside.
    • When Skies Have Fallen(Debbie McGowan) – Started this Friday morning. Finished it Sunday morning. Loved it.
    • The Melody of You and Me(M Hollis) – Read this Sunday. It was short, and I had some issues, mostly it felt really passive, but it was a sweet, cute story, and I enjoyed it.
    • Virgin River(Robyn Carr) – Started this Sunday afternoon, finished it Sunday night. This one felt like a lot of nothing happened. I wasn’t sure about adding the next book, but I decided to anyway. Though I’m surprised my eyes didn’t roll out of my head with ever use of ‘fanny'(seriously, what is so wrong with saying butt. It’s a freaking body part), or the fact that apparently the hero has a magic penis(or magic sperm, I guess), since the heroine couldn’t get pregnant after 3 years of trying with her late husband, but magically the first time they’re together, she does. If I have similar issues with book 2, I won’t be continuing the series.
    • Into the Night(Suzanne Brockmann) – Started this Monday morning. Finished it Monday night. Enjoyed it.
    • Marian(Ella Lyons) – Started this Tuesday morning. Finished it Tuesday night. Enjoyed it.
    • Out of the Blue(Jill Shalvis) – Read this Tuesday night. This was a shorter one(category length) and older one(from 2000), so it had a few eye-rolling moments, but it was a fun, sweet read.
    • Love in a Small Town(Zoe York) – Started this Wednesday afternoon. Finished it Wednesday night. Enjoyed it.
    • The King of Bourbon Street(Thea de Salle) – Started this Wednesday night. Finished it Friday afternoon. Really enjoyed it.
    • An Extraordinary Union(Alyssa Cole) – Started this Friday afternoon. Finished Saturday night. Really enjoyed this one!!!
  • Secondary: Listen to 6 books – 5/6 Close to target
    • Hold Me Close(Rosalind James) – Started this Monday morning. Finished it Tuesday afternoon. Really enjoyed it.
    • Girl in the Shadows(Gwenda Bond) – Started this Tuesday afternoon. Finished it Friday afternoon. Liked it, though not quite as much as the first book.
  • Stretch: Read 1 craft/research book – I did read a little more of The Story of the Irish Race for GH & SF.

    • Slanting Sunlight – continuation of Looking Up
    • Never Believe – a bit with Isaac shortly after him and Jonas break up.
    • End of the Party – more with Jonas & Isaac
    • The Monster – A really short one(125 words)
    • The News – more with Jonas & Isaac, this would be after the end of their story.
    • Protect You – Continuation of The Monster. Another attempted drabble(that went over 100 words again).
    • Aiding and Abetting – Happens either during Whatever It Takes or sometime after. Jared breaks a law, but with good reason(at least to his thinking).
    • Last Minute Sitter – Lyndi & Marika (from Preggers short story) getting ready to leave on their honeymoon. Not posted.
    • Just Sibling Stuff – more with Jonas, probably takes place during Jonas & Isaac. Jonas is watching his brother’s kids and has to deal with a situation(which seems to be a common occurrence in our house).
    • Discrepancy – Anna finds her boss acting suspiciously, then a discrepancy in funds.
    • Security – Jonas & Isaac heading off on their honeymoon, but first Jonas has to get through security.
    • House Hunting – Morgan tries to sell a house to Terrall, and may have just succeeded.
    • Do/Due – Combined with my SOCS post, Isaac has to deal with a confrontation at the center and may just miss Jonas’ welcome home party.

Writing Wednesday: Social Recovering

I had a very social weekend. On Friday, my husband dropped the dogs off at a local kennel where they could run and play, since we’d be gone all weekend. Then, we waited for the kids to get home, packed everything in the truck, and took the kids to the campground where my mom and stepdad were staying for the weekend. And we made our way to Seven Springs, a resort south of Pittsburgh. That’s where the regional rally for the motorcycle club we ride with was being held. There were people from stations of the club from all over the country(the furthest I saw was I think Wisconsin). We had pizza Friday night. We didn’t drink, though even if we were big drinkers, at $5 for a little cup of beer, I don’t think we would have anyway. Saturday morning we went on a ride out to the Flight 93 memorial and then to the site of the Quecreek Mine Rescue. Saturday night there was a nice dinner. Sunday we got up, had breakfast at our hotel(we didn’t stay at the resort, which was about 2x the price of our hotel 12 miles away), and headed home. It was a really good weekend, but I may still be recovering from all the social time.

I had a Mellow Monday, but ended up writing a little over 3000 words yesterday. I may not have gotten that if I’d pushed myself on Monday. So, I think Mellow Monday will be sticking around.

And now for WiPPet Wednesday! I’m still sharing from Jonas & Isaac’s story(probably will be for a while at least). This happens shortly after last week’s. Jonas is just getting home, feeling sore from walking to and from the bus stop and his thoughts are spiraling to a not great place. A little context on Jonas & Toby’s relationship. They’re half-brothers, Toby is about 16 years older than Jonas & his twin sister. Their father died when the twins were about 6/7. Toby stepped in to help his mother then. So, that’s what Toby refers back to at the beginning here. I have 36 sentences(9+27) for today.

Toby stepped out of the living room, Catarina on his shoulders. “Where have you been?” he asked.

“Out,” he snapped. “Don’t worry about it. You aren’t my father.”

Toby jerked back at that, but then a smile crossed his face. “Damn, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard that.”

“Fuck you,” he said and started past him.

But his good knee gave out on him, bringing him down hard on the crutch. He cried out then Toby was catching him. “What the hell did you do? Try to run a marathon?”

“Funny,” he said through clenched teeth. “Just need to lay down. Tired.”

“No, you need to take a damn pain pill. When’s the last time you took one?”

The day before, after his physical therapy session. But, he wasn’t going to tell his brother that. Toby put an arm under his shoulders. Catarina was scampering into the living room, so she must have gotten down at some point. “Come on,” he said. As he guided Jonas toward the den, he said, “I get it. I really do, Jonas. I grew up with an addict for a mother. You only got the cleaned up version of her. So, I get not wanting to risk that. But, all you’re doing is hurting yourself. And Mom, too. She sees what you’re doing and don’t think she doesn’t know why.”

Jonas cringed at that. He didn’t want to hurt her. But, there were already times he could hardly think about anything except taking the next pill. Anything to make the pain go away.

He dropped onto his bed in the den, burying his face in his pillow. “I should have just died with them.”

Oh, Jonas. Just want to dive into the notebook and hug him. Though, this is a bit of a turning point for him, when he realizes he might just need to ask for some help.
