Writing Wednesday:

I instituted my first Mellow Monday this week. And I finished reading 3 books in one day. 1 was short, and I’d actually started it Sunday night. But, I’m still counting it. My word count for the week is a little low. But, I’m hoping to catch up there, too.

Yesterday my kids had their yearly check-ups, so that cut into my day a bit. Picked them up early from school and took them up for that. Both are in good health and still right along the same growth curve they’ve been on since birth. The girl is at about 35% for both height and weight. For the boy, that’s about 70% for height and 40% for weight(so basically tall & skinny, which I could see for myself.;) ) Which is basically how his dad was as a kid from what I’ve been told and his dad as well. They both got the flu shot, and that was it. So, they’re good for the next year, as long as neither of them get sick.

Today, I don’t have anything that needs to take me away from the house. Tomorrow is Open House night at the school, but that’s not until 6, so plenty of time to get stuff done. On Friday we’re dropping the kids at my mom’s and going out of town for the weekend, so I won’t be getting much done then.

But, for now, I have another bit of Jonas & Isaac’s story for WiPPet Wednesday. For today I have 29 sentences(9+20. Simple math today). This is just shortly after last week’s. Konner has left them alone to talk.

“You want to sit or something?” Isaac asked. He didn’t think staying up on those crutches could be that comfortable.

“I’m fine,” Jonas said, though his jaw was still tight. “Toby came to bring me home for the weekend.” Isaac figured Toby must not have spoken to Jonas since then, since Isaac already knew that. “He told me, Isaac.”

Isaac kept his gaze on the floor. He wanted to look Jonas in the face, but it hurt. Not just seeing the scars there, but the pain that was evident in the rigid line of his jaw and in those dark eyes he’d always loved looking into.

“Told you what?” He didn’t even know why he was playing. Toby had told him he’d let Jonas know.

“About your dad. That he’s about to be released. Are you okay?”

Isaac’s head snapped up at that. “That’s why you’re here? The only reason you’d come to see me is because you think I’m falling apart because my asshole father is getting out of jail.” He didn’t know why he was surprised. Still, it hurt.

“I was worried about you,” Jonas said.

Just like Toby had told him. It didn’t help this ache in his chest, though. “Well, don’t be. I’ve got it handled. There are people who never left me who will stand around me.”

“You broke up with me,” Jonas reminded him. Like he really needed to.

“Because you were already planning to leave.”

Ouch. Will they get past this? is that really the only reason Jonas came to see him? Will he admit the real reason?

Writing Wednesday: Sleeping In

I don’t usually have a problem waking up early. Sometimes I do it even without an alarm. Even on weekends I’m usually up before 6. But, Friday I didn’t wake up until 6:30. Since the kids’ bus comes a little after 7, at least they were already up and getting dressed. Monday morning I slept until 5:30. Not too bad, but later than I’d like, since I like getting some writing done before the kids wake up. Tuesday I was up at my usual time, then this morning I woke at 3 but couldn’t keep my eyes open, so I put my phone down and went back to sleep. Until 6. So, that puts my whole schedule behind, but I can work with that.

I’ve decided to once again implement Mellow Monday. I’ve come to the realization that I need to take at least one day off a week. Just throw a middle finger up to my brain that says I’m not doing enough…no matter how much I’m actually getting done. Because usually by Thursday, I’m just…done. So, I figure if I take Monday off from writing(I’ll probably still do my Story a Day first thing this month and then maybe something laid back after that) and use it mainly as a reading day, this will help. Also, since we’re usually running around on weekends, and that also is when we’re most often social, it gives me a chance to recover from that(I am so not a social person). I did that Monday afternoon, after staring at my screen while trying to work on a story where usually the words flow, and I had…nothing. Tuesday was a much more productive day, so I think it helped.

Now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday time!! This blog hop, hosted by the inimitable Emily Wrayburn, is a place to share a snippet of a current work in progress that somehow pertains to the date. Today I’m still sharing from Jonas & Isaac’s story. I have 22 sentences(9+13) from a little later in the scene I shared from last week. Jonas has just come in to hear Isaac say he still loves him while he’s in Konner’s arms.

Konner shifted away, looking past Isaac. “Guess you must be Jonas, then.”

Isaac turned and watched Jonas’ gaze shift from him to Konner. “What gave you the first clue?”

Isaac twisted his head and saw Konner grinning. Of course. Very little kept him from doing that. No matter how rude someone got, Konner just kept grinning away. It had a tendency to disarm people.

“Well, you did basically just announce it,” he said. “And you look a lot like your older brother, so that doesn’t hurt.”

“So, it’s got nothing to do with the leg?” he asked, and Isaac thought he caught a hint of a smile.

“Didn’t get past the face actually.” He looked back at Isaac. “I get it now.”

“Get what?” Jonas asked, all traces of smile gone now. But, Konner kept his gaze on Isaac.

“Why you still haven’t been able to get over him. It bothered me back when we were dating, but I get it now. He’s a fine specimen. And all that emotion simmering under the surface. Yeah, I get it.”

How is Jonas going to react to that? Is Konner right? I should have a little more from this scene next week. You can go check out the other WiPPeteers here.

Sunday Summary: Cooling Down

You can tell Fall’s coming. Breaking out hooded sweatshirts in the morning and at night, and the pup(not such a pup, I guess, he’ll be 2 in November) tries to suck the body heat out anything he can by cuddling up close. I’m not complaining. I’d take the cooler weather over the heat of summer. You can always put on another layer. There’s only so much you can take off. 😉

he says this is Daddy riding his motorcycle.

My week got off to a rough start. Well, not the start so much. Despite Monday being a holiday, I made good progress. Then, came Tuesday. Yeah, we’ll just leave it at that. I took most of the day for reading. Wednesday I got  back on track and used Saturday to catch up on some goals. So, it ended up being a pretty good week after all.

Yesterday afternoon we went to a local community fair(I don’t think Pennsylvania has a state fair, but we do have a lot of county and community ones). Usually we go to the parade at this one, but my husband had to work in the morning, so we missed it this year. After we got there and walked around some of the barns, we got an elephant ear, funnel cake, and sugar waffles to split between the 4 of us. Then, we walked some more and visited with some of husband’s relatives who always bring their camper up for the fair. We went and got French fries after that then made our way out to come home. We ended up being there longer than I’d figured on, so it was late by the time we got home. But, it was a good day.

Now, for my progress for the week so far.

Writing:

  • Primary: Write 45000 words on 5 main projects(one almost complete) – 11886/45000 words Almost on target

      • “Oh, aye,” he said. “Scatter me to the winds, was it? Don’t you worry. I heard. I will heed the warning.” He winked at Alaina, and she giggled.  *No one seems to take Declan’s threat seriously. Probably for good reason. 😉
    • Still Burning – 2715 words
      • “Uh huh,” Jai said as perceptive as ever. “And I suppose you’ll say the same thing about Jess.” Then, he held up his hands. “Not my business. You’re a full-grown man, and I know the beliefs we’ve instilled in you.”
Which had never been that sex before marriage was a sin. Both of them would be hypocrites in that case. Being responsible had been instilled, though. So was caring about the people you were with. “I’ve kept them in mind,” he said.
    • Whatever It Takes – 2417 words
      • “Don’t tell me no one else brought pie. I’m sure you made at least one.”
He let out a deep laugh. “Sure. But you can never have too much pie.”*My sentiments exactly, Carlos. 😉
    • High on Loving You – 1995 words
      • Morgan yearned to do just that. Enjoying a dinner with her. He couldn’t think of anything he wanted more than that. No, he thought, closing his eyes. There was one thing. Raina’s happiness. It didn’t matter what he wanted. She always had to come before that. It might be different if she had a mother who actually cared about her. But, that wasn’t their reality.

    • Of Dreams and Rust(Sarah Fine) – Started this Monday morning. At 14%. Not sure if it’s because it’s been so long since I read the first book or what, but I find myself not really caring. Writing Wednesday: Drained

I felt completely drained yesterday. I think there were a couple reasons for that. Weeks beginning with a holiday usually throw me off anyway. Having kids and husband home for Labor Day means an upset to my routine. Of course, I actually got a good bit done on Monday. Then, Tuesday morning I woke up at 1:30. Couldn’t fall back asleep. So, I decided to just get up around 3. I wrote until 5, did some other stuff and when I came back to write during the next two-hour block, I just stared at the computer. I ended up doing chores then…just reading pretty much. I didn’t touch any of my stories the rest of the day(well, except for Jonas & Isaac I did write another page and a half, maybe, of them). I’m adjusting how I get things done and just about have Heart of Christmas finished as I write this. And it’s done! So, I’ll be working an hour on each of my projects in 2 hour blocks, so I still have those 2 hours of non-writing between.

But right now it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday. Today I have 7 paragraphs(9+6+2+0+1+7=25=2+5=7) from Jonas & Isaac’s story. This is the day after last week’s snippet, and we’re back in Isaac’s POV here.

Isaac unlocked the classroom door, flipping the light switch before stepping in. He never liked walking into a dark room. His father had laid in wait too many times for him to be comfortable with it.

He gave a little shudder at the memory. But, his father was still in prison. Two more weeks. Less than that really. Isaac had finally stopped looking over his shoulder, stopped half-expecting his father to jump out at him around each corner. Would that all start up again?

No. No, he wasn’t going there again. If he did, he still had his therapist’s number programmed in his phone. He just saw him on an as-needed basis, but the option was there.

He grabbed a marker to write on the whiteboard at the front of the room. They were drawing from models this month. Each student brought their own object to focus on. On the board, he wrote ‘Highlighting your model’.

He walked to the back of the room to get everything set up for the class. It was a soothing task for him. Usually he didn’t mind letting his mind wander. But lately it was skipping right to Jonas. And that couldn’t be healthy for him.

“High enough for you?”

Isaac turned from the art supplies he was sorting and burst out laughing. “Konner, put your shirt down.” Not that he’d ever minded seeing that light brown skin on display. Still… “That is not the kind of model we’re using for this class.”

Oh, Konner. Still up to his usual antics. 😉

Plotting:

  • Primary: Green Hills & Smoky Fields: Book 1 – Story Toolkit – starting this when I finish drafting Heart of Christmas.

Sunday Summary: 7 & 11

Seven years ago at this time, I was laying in a hospital bed, about half an hour away from my son being born. Let’s just say, he pretty much charged into this world and hasn’t slowed down much since then. 11 years ago, we were just getting the phone call that my soon-to-be father-in-law(our wedding was to be 13 days later) was not doing well in the hospital, and we needed to get there right away9and that was a Sunday, too). He died a few hours later. So, needless to say, this tends to be a bittersweet day.

This is the only picture I really have of him, and the way I like to remember him.

7 years old

Yesterday we went up to Erie so my husband could get new tires put on our truck. We stopped at Wendy’s for lunch(French fries in frosty, yum) then the girl and I walked down to Barnes & Noble(basically next door) to waste some time while he took care of that. I got three books, and the girl got two then we sat in the café while we waited, and she finished reading one of her books.

We had some friends over for a fire last night. Hot dogs, pizza mountain pies, and corn roasted over the fire. YUM!! And then…it started raining. So we packed everything up and went inside. I fell asleep on the couch around 8, woke up at 10(with a stiff neck), went back to bed and woke up at 4 with a horrible cramp in my calf. So, a fun night.

Now, it’s time to evaluate this week’s/month’s goals. I have through Thursday directly below. Then, after that, everything for September.

Social Media:

  • Primary: Post Writing Wednesday(mid-week check-in & snippet from Jonas & Isaac), Fiction Friday, SOCS, WeWriWa, & Sunday Summary posts each week – 1/5 last week(the rest will be in September’s goals). Pretty much stayed on track.

Writing Wednesday: Back to School

Sunday we had the boy’s birthday party, even though his birthday isn’t actually until this coming Sunday. But with Labor Day weekend, we figured it was easier to have it early. I actually don’t think in 7 years we’ve ever had his party on his actual birthday. I think part of that is the fact he shares it with the day my father-in-law died, so that’s always a bittersweet day. Anyway, he had a good time, got a bunch of stuffed dogs and some new clothes.

He wanted a Bumblebee Transformers cake, so this is what I came up with

And Tuesday they started back to school. I swear it’s impossible to get a serious picture of this child:

I may have listened to Hamilton at full volume(which isn’t really all that loud on my computer) while they were gone. That’s about the extent of my partying ways. And I did a good bit of writing. Yeah, it was a good day.

And now, since it’s WiPPet Wednesday time, I have another snippet from Jonas & Isaac today. Today I have 12 paragraphs(8+3+0+1 bonus to celebrate back to school time). Jonas’ brother, Toby, has shown up while Jonas is with the physical therapist. Realize the brother and therapist know each other from Toby’s time in the Army. Will likely be changing therapist’s name because having a Toby and Tony in the same scene is a bit confusing. 😉

He tried to ignore not being able to do a damn thing for himself and looked back at his brother. “Why are you here? You knew about my appointment today, so it’s not like we can leave early. Please don’t say you came to tell me you knocked Denise up again. What would this make? Six?”
It sounded like Tony was choking on laughter, but Jonas didn’t take his eyes off his brother. “Four, you brat. And, no, that’s not why. She didn’t want to tell anyone yet.”
“Damn, Tobes,” Tony said, “I’m surprised she hasn’t made you get it snipped yet.”
Toby grinned, but there was definitely something off about his eyes. “What can I say? She likes making babies with me.”
“Ew, gross. Think I’m gonna puke,” Jonas said, getting his crutches under him and heading for the door. Toby had caught up to him by the time he reached it.
“Maybe we can grab some lunch before your appointment,” he suggested.
Jonas stopped just outside the room. There was definitely something going on. “Tell me, Toby. You’re starting to worry me. Just tell me.”
Toby leaned back against the wall and sighed. “Mama didn’t think we should tell you yet. Didn’t want to worry you when you need to focus on recovering.”
Jonas wasn’t sure he could breathe. “Is she sick? Is it bad?”
Toby shook his head. “It’s not Mama. It’s bad, but not her.”
“Arcelia?” he asked, his breathing even shallower.
Toby put his hands on Jonas’s shoulders. “No. No one is sick, Jo. It’s Isaac’s father. He’s being paroled.”

Yikes. That doesn’t sound good, does it? What’s Jonas going to do about it? Might this be what finally gets him to talk to Isaac again?

Writing Wednesday: One More Week

Actually a little less than a week. That’s when the kids go back to school! (Does it make me a bad mom if I throw a little party?) This hasn’t been the worst summer. The kids may actually be starting to get a long better, or at least handling it better when they get upset with each other. Although the last week or so, there’s been more arguing over little things. Tomorrow the list should be up so we find out who their teachers are. We got the girl everything on the list for what she’ll need for 4th grade. And she’s said she’s ready to go back.

We’re having the boy’s birthday party this weekend. His birthday isn’t for another week after that, but since that’s Labor Day weekend, and people usually have plans, we decided to have it early. Of course, my dad still won’t be there. But, I ranted about that on twitter last week(I think). No need to go into it again. Needless to say, I’m not surprised, and it’s nothing new.

I mentioned on Sunday about working in two hour blocks and writing a “day map” for getting everything done. I’m still doing that this week, and it seems to be going well for me, so I think I’ll keep doing that. Until it becomes more of a pain than a help anyway. This was my map from Monday(I adjust it as needed, but I think I like this basic format):

Now, it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday, the blog hop where we share a snippet that somehow corresponds to the day. Today I have 9 paragraphs(8-2+3) from the next scene of Jonas & Isaac’s story. He took the dinner order back to the youth center where both he and Konner(may remember him from Whatever It Takes snippets) work. They aren’t together anymore, but still good friends.

Konner sat on the desk in front of him. It was a position they’d been in plenty of times during college. There was nothing sexual in it right now, though. There hadn’t been for a few years. “You’re worrying me, Isaac. What’s going on?”
“He’s home,” he said softly.
He didn’t have to say more. Understanding dawned in his eyes. “It’s not the first time. Usually you just avoid him when he has leave. Didn’t Tereza tell you this time?”
Isaac shook his head. It was the only time she even mentioned his name. “It’s not just leave this time. He was hurt.”
“Oh.” Konner leaned forward and pressed his forehead to Isaac’s. “I’m sorry. How bad?”
“I don’t know,” he said, choking slightly on the words as tears welled in his eyes. “I only saw his face, and the scars there.” And one eye hadn’t seemed to track him. “I couldn’t stand it. It shouldn’t hurt. This is why I walked away five years ago. So, it wouldn’t hurt. Why didn’t that work?”
“Because you still love him.” Konner slid off the desk to wrap his arms around Isaac.
“No,” Isaac insisted. “I don’t. I can’t.”
Konner smiled softly at him. “Sometimes I don’t think we have a choice. Now, eat.”

Is Konner right? Will Jonas & Isaac get another chance? Does Konner still love Isaac? While you wait for those answers, why don’t you check out the other WiPPeteers? 😉

      • “He does not belong with us, Haiwee. He has his own people.”
    • Roman – 257 words

    • Dougal & Shae – 354 words
      • It was better for all of them if she just forgot all about him. And the way he’d made her feel. Particularly the way he made her feel.
    • Jacob & Matthew – 261 words
      • Jacob put his hands on Matthew’s shoulders, staring hard at him. “You can’t be serious. No one in this town would trust me with that badge. What if I gambled it away?”

      • “Are you still worrying?” he asked as he placed another kiss at my wrist.
    • Sean & Braeden – 285 words

    • Melanie & Garren(Patreon bonus content from Healing the Heart) – 275 words
      • She hadn’t even talked to Jared since they’d finished medical school. She doubted she ever would again. *If you’ve read Healing the Heart, you know why this is sort of prophetic.
