Writing Wednesday: Rolling Through the Snow

Ok, not literally. That would be really cold. But, it’s been snowing here pretty steadily since the other night. Not as bad as some places, but we’ve definitely gotten a good amount. Not enough for them to even delay school, though.

And I’ve made a lot of progress on my writing goals for the week. As in, I’ve checked everything on my weekly goals list off. So, I’ll be working on my A-Z posts for the rest of the week during my writing time.

And before I get to more on that, it’s WiPPet Wednesday!! I thought I’d be sharing from one of my side projects, if that’s what I had open when I got to working on this post, but since everything is done, I’ll share some more from Stay a Little Longer. I have 15 paragraphs today(simple math this time). Mike is Jess’ daughter’s father, and their at his house for the daughter’s birthday.

Twenty minutes later she was pulling into his driveway. And saw Terrall’s car already parked there. Her stomach twisted a little. He was early. She was hoping to get there in time to introduce him. She looked up and saw the two dark-skinned men standing on the porch together, looking out at her.
She took a deep breath then stepped out of the car, going around to get Clay out of his seat. Paul was already standing at the front of the car, the gift he’d made and wrapped himself in his hands. “Why’s he here?” he asked, looking at Terrall.
“He’s my friend, Paul,” she said, wishing they could be even more than that. “I invited him.”
Her son didn’t say anything else, but he seemed wary as he approached the porch. Mike ruffled the boy’s hair, and Paul ducked away even as he laughed. Then, her ex took Clay from her arms and quickly flipped him upside down. Her son giggled, and Jess couldn’t help but smile. She loved hearing that sound. He might not talk much, but he was a happy child. That meant she had to be doing something right, didn’t it?
She glanced at Terrall then back to Mike. “I’ll get the rest of the things out of the car. Be right back.”
By the time she’d opened the trunk, Terrall was standing next to her. “Do you need help with anything?” he asked.
She looked up at him, feeling the smile spread even as razor-tipped wings fluttered in her stomach. She couldn’t remember any one else ever making her feel like this. “You can tell me why you’re here so early,” she said.
“You told me the party started at one, but you’d be here earlier to set up. I figured I’d lend a hand if I could.”
It was a sweet thing to do. She hadn’t asked him to do it. She handed him the cake box. “You can take this into the kitchen.” She grabbed the box of favor bags and started to lift it. But, he nudged her aside and set the cake on top of it, lifting both boxes at once.
Jess sighed. “I can lift a little box, Terrall.”
He leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. She moaned and leaned into him. His tongue grazed her lips then he jerked back, as if he’d forgotten himself for a moment. And his eyes were dark when she met them. He just smiled at her then started toward the house. She sighed again and grabbed the pinata she’d purchased the other day. At least he was letting her carry that.
“So, I met Mike,” he said as they walked up the sidewalk. “Seems like a nice guy.”
“He is,” Jess said. “Like I told you, we’re still friends even though we didn’t work out. Neither of us see Alex as a rope that needs to be tugged between us.” Unlike the way Frank seemed to think of Paul.
“Met his…partner, too.”
A corner of her mouth ticked up at his hesitation. “Boyfriend is the term they use,” she told him. “And it’s fine. I knew when Mike and I first got together that he was bi. It never bothered me. And Fadil has been good for him. I wish them all the happiness in the world.”

So, I almost want to write Mike and Fadil’s story now. Every time mike shows up in this one, I like him more and more. Not sure I’ll ever get to that one, though it may end up being a short story or novella.

Now, as promised, my progress for the week.

  • Primary: Heart of Christmas(BC Security 3.5) – write back stories, plot summary, and complete Story Toolkit – 1496 words on Alaina’s back story, 649 on Caelen’s back story. 2145 words so far this month
  • Secondary: Still Burning(Hunter Family #4) – Brainstorm

  • Primary: Stay a Little Longer – add 45000 words/finish 38 scenes – 28269 words/45000, 27/38 scenes for the month. 7906 words/9 scenes this week. I wrote 5k on this just Tuesday morning. The words were definitely flowing.
  • Secondary: Side Projects – 5000 words, edit Chapter 1 of Patrick & Sarah & Chapter 1 of Tavin & Haiwee, read through 9 chapters of Snow White Twist(there’s actually 10, but I read through chapter 1 in February) – 3349/5000 words so far this month. 1014 since last check-in. 63/63 comments applied to Patrick & Sarah & posted to Patreon. And sent chapter 2 to beta.  51/51 comments applied to Tavin & Haiwee, have read through 5/9 in Snow White Twist.

  • Primary: Stained Blood – 10 new scenes & apply CP edits to 40 scenes – 2/10 new scenes finished this month, started on the 3rd. 3/40 scenes edited. 2580 words added this month. 1022 since last check-in
  • Secondary: Flames of Renewal(if I get back from CP) – complete CP edits
    • In the Moonlight – start revisions

  • A-Z posts – draft 24 posts – 2/24 for the month. 160 words on E post. 0 since last check-in. I’ll be working on these this afternoon and the rest of the week, though.
  • A-Z posts – edit & format 26 posts

  • Listen: 8 books – 3/8 for the month, 0 since last check-in
    • King’s Cage(Victoria Aveyard) – just started this one Wednesday morning. On Chapter 23.
  • Read: 31 books – 13/31 for the month, 2 since last check-in. I set aside several that my MIL gave me. They just didn’t pull me in.
    • Crimson Stain(Jim Fisher) – this is a true crime story about an Amish man who killed his wife not very far from where we live(It happened when I was about 8 years old). Reading this when I finish the rest of the books on my weekly list. On page: 181/314(not counting all the end notes & index)
    • Hammer of the Gods(Christina Ochs) – this is book 3 in her Desolate Empire series. I got the boxed set, but I’ve already read the first 2 separately, so I jumped right to this one on my phone. I’ll read it in the between moments. I’m on Chapter 7/166(If I counted right. The chapters are labeled with POV characters’ names instead of numbers).
    • The Ranger(Monica McCarty) – Read this on Monday. Really enjoyed it.
    • Wanderlust(Roni Loren) – I started this one after setting several others aside(ones my MIL had given to me, and they just didn’t grab me). I’ve actually read it before when it was part of an anthology, but I’ll always re-read a Roni Loren book. I finished reading it last night. It was a pretty quick one, but just as good as I remember(though there was one detail I believe was changed).
    • First and First(Santino Hassell) – Just started this morning. At 2%.

  • Knit: Georgian Lace Cap – started this on Monday. Have 4/4 rounds knitted for the brim. 36/40 rounds knitted for cap lace section. Almost finished round 37 but ran out of yarn.
  • Crochet: Cross-over Long DC Hat – will be starting this today probably.
  • Loom: Ambrosia Love Scarf & Last Minute Slouchy Hat – I finished the scarf on Sunday.

January Wrap-Up

It’s the end of the month, so time to go through the detritus it’s left me with(ha, yes, I did use that word to fit in the final Just Jot It prompt for the month). It’s been a pretty good month progress-wise. I was able to finish up 2 first drafts, one I’d been working on since May. The other I started halfway through October(and it was just a novella). And I think I’ve found the best way for me to get to everything. I have my main project that I work on every day from 5-7 a.m. Then, I work on a different secondary project from 8-9 a.m. And I have a half hour set aside each for plotting & editing. It seems to be working for now.

And now to look at how I’ve done so far! The month isn’t quite over yet, I will still be reading and working on side projects later this afternoon, but I’ve gotten to the main things for today, so I’m going to write this up for now instead of waiting for tomorrow since my Wednesday posts tend to be long anyway.

  • Loving the Devil – Outline – I set this aside. It just wasn’t coming together and the characters weren’t really talking to me. May pick it back up some other time
  • Playing with Fire – Outline – Still working my way through the Story Toolkit on this. Excited to get started on it.

  • In the Moonlight – 1st draft – finished this one with 14964 words this month

  • Just Jot It January – 30 posts – I know I didn’t do 30. I did all but day 1 and some of the one-liner Wednesday prompts. When I finish this one though, I’ll have 28 post. So, I got pretty close to that initial goal.
  • A-Z Challenge – plot posts – these are all plotted. Now, to start drafting them.

New Year, New Month, New Start

I had planned to put a new set of goals for the year, quarter, month, week in yesterday’s post. But, that post was already getting pretty long. So, I decided to save it for today. I’m going to break each set of goals up the way I usually do, into writing/plotting/editing…and so on. Now, time to get to them:

I have a tendency to change what I’m working on throughout the year. That’s a long time to plan ahead for after all. So, these I may keep a bit more vague than I usually do.

November Wrap-Up

I thought about including this with my mid-week post, but I decided not to for a couple reasons. One, it was already nearing 1000 words, and I didn’t want it to end up too long. And, I also hadn’t figured out my goals for December yet. Plus, waiting until today gave me a little more time to get some more things crossed off.

Overall, it was a pretty good month, at least writing-wise. Between my main projects, side projects, and 2 editing projects, I ended up with a little over 67,000 words for the month. 58778 of that was toward NaNoWriMo.  A definite win there.

I got Healing the Heart ready to publish. It releases tomorrow, but you can pre-order it now.

Both of my submissions to World Unknown Review were rejected for this year, even though I got some good comments about them. And I’m working on fleshing out one of them into a longer short story/novelette/novella(depending on how long it ends up).

What else? Not too sure. So, I’ll just get to laying out my itemized progress:

  • Stay a Little Longer – outline
  • Stained Blood – Re-plot – still waiting to hear back from my CP before I throw some other ideas I had for this at her.
  • And I just started brainstorming a new standalone idea. Hoping to have it ready to write once I finish drafting In the Moonlight.

  • Write 11000 words each on:
    • Defending the Heart(BC Security #3) – 11082 words
    • Crash & Burn(Flames #5.75) – 11974 words
    • Not Meant to Be(Gilbert, Co #6) – 11092 words
    • Stay a Little Longer(Kurztown #5) – 13548 words
    • In the Moonlight -11082 words
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 24500 words/1st draft – 24742/24500 words. Have at least a few more scenes to finish this.
  • Snow White Twist – get to 18500 words/1st draft – 18672/18500 words. Again, at least a few scenes left to finish this.
  • Patrick & Sarah – get to 2750 words – 3033/2750 words
  • Tavin & Haiwee – get to 2200 words – 2365/2200 words
  • Roman – get to 3500 words – 3527/3500 words
  • Dougal & Shae – get to 1500 words – 1845/1500 words
  • I also outlined new scenes for Midas’ Daughter and added 524 words to it.

  • Healing the Heart – Beta Edits & final proofread – done & done
  • Guarding the Heart – Polish & add to list to send to CP – mostly done. I have 44/50 words searched for and cleaned up. Hoping to finish it this week.

  • Listen: 6 audiobooks(already finished 1) – 12/6 audiobooks. I did a lot of listening this month.
  • Read: 29 books(already finished 2)– 22/29 books. Not as many as I would have liked.

  • Knit: Tricorder Hat, Wheatfields Dishcloth, Polly Wolly Doodle Hat – Done, done, and done. wp-1478702318489.jpg wp-1479302187760.jpg wp-1480249846252.jpg
  • Crochet: Tiny Jellyfish – Done wp-1478702323606.jpg

A lot of blue, a little green, and hardly any red. Just the way I like it. Now, to look forward to December:

  • Still Burning(Hunter Family#4/Flames#6) – Outline

Writing Wednesday: Keeping the Pace

Last week, I’d fallen behind by Wednesday then ended up picking up the pace for the second half of the week. and I ended up getting almost all my goals met. This week I’m holding to a steadier pace. Not really getting ahead but staying on track. Which is pretty good still. and, yeah, not much more to say about that. So, on to what you’re here for.

First up, WiPPet Wednesday time! Woohoo!! I’m still working on Break on Me as my main project. Though this has gone so far off my outline, I’m not quite sure I can find my way back. I had this happen with Love Who You Love, too. Probably means I’ll have a lot of revising to do. But, for now, Gabe & Lora are broken up and I have to work on getting them back together. So, I’ll keep plowing ahead. As for today’s snippet, I’ll be reversing to pick up right where I left off last week. I have the next 4 paragraphs(1+0+1+9-1-6).

Gabriel bristled at that, but he understood. Aaron hadn’t been so welcoming to Erik, had even made things a little rougher on him when the younger man had first joined their unit. “You know the words don’t matter. The message was clear. He didn’t want anyone who wasn’t right for her. And how could I be?”

“Are you fucking serious?” Erik demanded. “You’re one of the best men I’ve ever known. Hell, you let me move in here with you, no questions asked. And I know damn well you haven’t banked any of the money I’ve given you for rent.”

“I told you when you moved in, that I didn’t need you to pay me. It’ll be there if you ever want to find your own place.”

Erik shook his head. “I don’t need you to take care of me. Neither does she,” he said, jerking his thumb toward the bedroom. “I know you don’t think you’re good enough. For anybody. But, that’s not what this is about. It’s about what she wants, and what you want. What makes the two of you happy. Maybe you should take some of that when it’s right there in front of you.”

Erik often acts like nothing matters to him. But, that’s definitely not the case. Can’t wait to get to his story. he’s being rather patient as other characters keep popping up and saying their stories come first.

Now, as for my progress for the week. I’ve been doing a general update for each section of my goals, but I’m going to go back to my list format for now. it’s just easier to keep track that way.

  • Write 14000 words – 6840/14000 words so far and I’m not done with today’s words yet.
    • Break on Me – 5498 words – She snorted. “Aaron used to say I was a wildcat in disguise. If someone I cared about was being attacked, physically or verbally, I have a tendency to jump in, claws out.”
    • In the Moonlight – 1061 words – Mom had said it was disrespectful for us to make assumptions like that. Both Ms. Adriane and Bailey were good, decent people. I had never understood what that had to do with them being in love with each other. And if they did have something going on, I thought good for them. Because Mom was right. They were good, decent people. They deserved to be happy, even if it was only for a short time.
    • Defending the Heart – 281 words – On his next trip in, with just one box this time, he heard cursing coming from the small office. In French. Oh no. No, no, no. Piers wasn’t starting until next week. What was he even doing here? Xavier couldn’t make his feet move any closer to the office to find out.
  • Edit: Guarding the Heart Read through – I’m about 40% through this. I already have almost 150 notes in it. Some of them are little things that will be quite easy to fix. but still. *sigh*
  • Plot: Jess & Terrall – Story Tookit: through Act 2 Beat sheet – On track with this. I’m through the locations worksheet. Will do the second one today. I’ve added 1330 plotting words this week.
  • Side Projects – Write 1500 words between them – nothing here yet
  • Listen: Minutes to Kill(Melinda Leigh) – I’m just about finished with this. It’s the last one I had in my library, but I went and added the audio for Crooked Kingdom(which I read earlier this month), so I’ll listen to that next(I did the same thing with Six of Crows, which I’ve now listened to three times)
  • Read: Finish Signal Boost(Alyssa Cole), Falling into Bed with a Duke(Lorraine Heath), 37 Things I Love(Kekla Magoon), The Shadow Queen(CJ Redwine), Fake ID(Lamar Giles), Rock Addiction(Nalini Singh), Frost Station Alpha(Ruby Lionsdrake), The Invisible Entente(Krista Walsh) – I finished Signal Boost Sunday night(really enjoyed), Finished Falling into Bed with a Duke yesterday(enjoyed) and 37 Things I love(liked, though it made me cry at the end). I’ll be starting The Shadow Queen today.
  • Knit/Crochet – dish cloths – I finished one of these. Ended up using four different colors of yarn. Well, two were purple, but right next to each other, you can tell they’re different shades. Don’t think I’ll make more until I get more cotton yarn. I don’t think I have enough of any one color to finish one cloth. wp-1476878789373.jpg

Teaser Tuesday: Jared’s Past

I have another teaser from Healing the Heart for you today. I’m back to polishing this up for beta readers, so anyone who is interesting in reading and giving feedback, let me know. This is the follow-up to Duty to Protect, and while it does make references to the first book, you don’t necessarily have to read it first.

If you’ve read snippets I’ve shared for Wippet Wednesday, you may recognize this character.

She trailed off, her eyes locked on something past him. He started to turn then a big hand came down on his shoulder. He started to tense until the voice said, “J-Man, why didn’t you tell me you were coming in?”

He let out a breath. “Blayze. I mean, Carlos.” He still forgot the man had gone back to his birth name after leaving the gang. “This is my…this is, Melanie. She’s been volunteering at the clinic.” He couldn’t believe he’d almost called her his girlfriend. They’d never labeled what they had. He hadn’t wanted to.

The man smirked though as if he understood. “It’s been a long time, J. You don’t come into my place near enough.”

“I’ve been busy.” He didn’t interact with people from his old life much outside of the clinic, either. How else would he be able to say he’d put it behind him? Melanie still stared at the man behind him, and Jared imagined he did make a strange sight. His dark skin was tattooed, his arms, his hands, even his neck. In the restaurant, he always wore a nice button-up shirt and slacks, but it didn’t hide all of it. How many businessmen did she see who were covered in ink?

“Mel, this is Carlos Armas. I’ve known him a long time, and he owns this place.”

She closed her mouth then and held out a hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Armas.”

He laughed but shook her hand. “Call me Carlos, please, and it’s my pleasure.”

“How’s Brent?” Jared asked. Shadows flitted across the man’s eyes, then they were blank. Not good apparently.

“Haven’t spoken to him recently. I need to get back, but I hope you enjoy your dinner. You’re welcome here anytime, J.”

Jared nodded, but Carlos reached across the table to take Melanie’s hand. It looked strange seeing her perfectly smooth hand in his rough scarred one. Jared felt a spurt of jealousy then Carlos released it and stepped back. “Take care of my boy here.”

“I’ll try to. He doesn’t make it easy.”

Carlos headed back toward the kitchen. Jared turned back to her and saw Melanie’s gaze on him. “What was that about?” she asked. “Who’s Brent?”

“His brother. We used to…run together,” he said, not thinking of a better way to phrase it. Brent had gotten him into the Coyotes, through his older brother. Carlos had made him think he could get out of it when the time came.

“He seems like a good guy,” she said, covering his hand with hers.

“He is. Once you get past the tattoos.”

“I didn’t even notice. He has tattoos?”

She couldn’t hide the smile at her lie though, and Jared laughed. With that, all the awkwardness disappeared. Why hadn’t he made her smile sooner?

Writing Wednesday: Back to School

The kids went back to school yesterday. Loving the quiet in the house during the day.

Still working on settling into a routine that works for me. Right now, I’m working on writing goals first thing in the morning, those will shift slightly starting tomorrow since I’ll be moving back to a focus on drafting, though I’ll still be doing some editing and plotting. I’ve been working my way down my to-do list and if I finish everything for the day early, I start on the next day’s goals. So far this week, I’ve been doing good at staying ahead.

It’s Wednesday, so time for another WiPPet snippet! I believe last week I said I was sharing the last snippet from Shed Some Light. Well, I guess I was lying. Since it’s the last thing I was working on(besides polishing Stained by Ashes), I’ll have some more of it for you this week. I have 12 paragraphs today(8+3+1=12). Carlos is just realizing Tereza is in some trouble. And Toby shows up.

“She said she wanted to clear her name, from the ethics issue and any connection to Damon or Brent’s deaths.”

“Bullshit,” Carlos spat the word. “She doesn’t give a damn about this. She knew I wanted to go after Maxton. She was trying to do this before I did.”

I know,” Toby said softly. “I also know Kogan put it out that he wanted to get his hands on her. I warned her.”

“He’s got her,” Carlos said. “I went there, and he taunted me with it. I couldn’t believe she’d let herself get caught by him, though. I told myself she wouldn’t go anywhere near him. How could I be so stupid?”

Toby reached out to put a hand on Carlos’ shoulder but seemed to think better of it at the last moment. Probably a good idea. Carlos wasn’t sure just what it would take to make him snap.

“Go home, Carlos,” Toby said, already pulling his phone out. “I’ll get her.”

“No,” Carlos said, pushing away from the door. “He already has her. Who knows what he’s already done to her.” He’d said his men had orders not to hurt her. That wouldn’t apply to Maxton himself, though. ‘I have to get to her.”

“No,” Toby said sharply. “You have to leave this to us. Otherwise I’ll be pulling you both out of there.”

“I can’t let anything happen to her.”

“I’m already calling it in. Just leave it to us, Carlos.”

“No,” he said, brushing past Toby. “I’ve let her down too many times already. I can’t do it again.”

Toby swore behind him, but Carlos was already jogging down the steps. He didn’t care. All that mattered was getting to Tereza. Getting her safe. He’d worry about the consequences later.

Uh oh. Not looking too good, is it?

On to my progress on the last of my goals for August. I’ll have separate goals for the rest of this week at the end of this post.

  • Write 3000 words – 3275 words/3000 words. All on Shed Some Light – He heaved out a breath, but could hardly drag in any more air. And fuck, it hurt.
  • Stained by Ashes – Polish – I’ve made it a good way through the list of words to search for. Shouldn’t have a problem finishing it this week.
  • Defending the Heart – finish outlining – just finished this yesterday. Can’t wait to start writing
  • Side projects – add 1200 words – 1637/1200 words.
    • Dance with the Devil – 1071 words – “It’s not gonna be a smooth ride, but I’ll get you back as fast as I can. Just hold on to me, Damon,” he said, his voice cracking. “Don’t let go. Please don’t let go of me.”
    • Snow White Twist – 566 words – She could have sworn she’d seen her stepmother’s face in the water. Tarian must be rubbing off on her. Now, she was seeing danger in every shadow. It’s not the way she’d like Tarian to rub on her.
  • Read: Writing Vivid Characters – finish – finished this yesterday
  • Listen: Rough Justice(Sarah Castille) – finished listening to this. Another one that left me with mixed feelings. Not sure if I’ll continue the series. Started listening to A Rogue Not Taken(Sarah MacLean), which I’m really enjoying.
  • Read: Radio Silence(Alyssa Cole), Summer Nights(Susan Mallery), Summit of Seduction(Elena Aitken) – finished Radio Silence(really enjoyed) & Summer Nights(enjoyed). About 25% through Summit of Seduction.

Now, as it’s the end of the month, I’ll be evaluating my progress for that, too.

  • Dance with the Devil – get to 15000 words – got to over 17000 words
