Sunday Summary: October Wrap-Up

Yesterday was Halloween and our town’s trick-or-treating night(my hometown always does it the Thursday before Halloween). We started at the fire station and walked around for close to an hour. Then, we stopped at one of the churches for hot dogs and hot chocolate before heading back up to the fire station. On the way there, a call went out for an outside fire. So, the boy got to see the firetrucks leave. By the time, we were in our truck, they’d already cancelled the call(so, probably someone burning a leaf pile or something). So, he got to see them come back too.

Before trick-or-treating, we’d gone up to Erie. I took 15 paperbacks I had stacked up on a shelf to the used bookstore. This was my first time taking any in, though I have bought some from there. We walked out with another 8 books(only 4 of those were for me) and only spent about $10. And I wonder why my TBR piles doesn’t seem to shrink. šŸ˜‰

I posted my WeWriWa snippet separately this week, but you can go check it out if you want. It’s been a pretty good week, and I seem to have found a good routine for balancing writing/editing and everything else on my to-do list.

  • By the Gun ā€“ get to 3000 words – 4236/3000. A lot of these were old words moved over from my last attempt.
  • Some Fools Never Learn ā€“ reach 16000 words – 16687/16000. These rolled out pretty easily.
  • Let It Begin ā€“ finish 1st draft – done, done, DONE! At 33226 words. Over a total of 10 writing days.
  • My Way to You ā€“ reach 6000 words – 7144/6000. These were rolling good, too, and a bit emotional. I got through the beginning ‘present’ chapters and have moved into the ‘past’ chapters where Bryan & Leo first meet.
  • Guarding the Heart ā€“ reach 70000 words – 70262/70000. I’ll be working on this first in November, but realized there was a really big plot hole in the upcoming scenes. Spent some time this morning, re-outlining the final chapters to try to fix that.
  • Chasing the Ghost ā€“ revision note cards – this is done.
  • Just Add Moonlight ā€“ Finish revisions & submit – done, Done, DONE! Submitted yesterday morning, just under the wire. Now, I wait to hear if any of my submissions will be accepted.
  • Read: 2k-5k – finished this on Friday
  • Read: Into the Devilā€™s Underground, Cutting Edge(Allison Brennan), Foolproof(Jennifer Blackwood), The Heiress Effect(Courtney Milan), & Bringing Home the Bad Boy(Jessica Lemmon) – finished my Loving on The Edge series(Roni Loren) re-read Wednesday night & read the new novella on Thursday. Then, I started back on the list of books I’d planned to read this month. Read Into the Devil’s Underground(I’d read an older version of the book before she changed the title and revamped it. I did like the changes). Realized Cutting Edge is the third book in a series, so I set it aside until I read the other 2. Then, I read Foolproof yesterday. Really enjoyed it. Moving the other 2 to November’s list, though I have read through a little more than half of The Heiress Effect.
  • Knit: Cuddly Chevron Blanket – didn’t work on this at all this week. I did just finish this afternoon my first project on a rectangle loom, though. wpid-wp-1446417294956.jpg

Writing Wednesday: Changing Things Up

So, remember how in my goals post I said I was simplifying things for this round? Yeah. I guess I’m not so good at being simple. Or at least not on keeping my focus on just one project. I had just been focusing on brainstorming and outlining for right now. But, we were coming home from a trip on Saturday and suddenly I got an idea for the WiP I’ve been working on and off with since September. I’ve battled with it pretty much from the beginning and in January had pretty much decided to shelve it. The idea I got was actually for a scene towards the end, but it was the kick in the butt I needed to work on what comes before that too. Along with that I decided to print out the second story in my Inner Demons series, (which ended up being more complicated than I expected, with trying to get number of pages to print down and then having to organize it all when it printed out of order) and work on editing it now. So, I will have new goals for the rest of the round. Will post them at the end of this.

  • Send Slow Revenge to Beta Readers –Ā still haven’t sent it to any, but did put out some feelers for any one who would want to read it.
  • Brainstorm new ideas for Western novella, Stained Snow – I finished the last of the back stories last Thursday. Unless I feel the need to dig into a side character at some point. But, even if I do, it should be shorter than the main ones I did.
  • Start outlining Stained Snow – I started working through the snowflake method on Thursday. I’m on step 6 now, which is the last one I do. There are two more after it, I think, but I’ve found they really don’t work for my process. I should be able to finish it today or tomorrow. Then, I’ll be working on the rest of my outlining process. Hoping to be done with it the first week of March at the latest and then I can start writing.
  • Read 20 books – I finished Writing with a Heavy Heart last Wednesday and Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund on Friday. I read Medusa’s Desire by E.B. Black over the weekend and started Shift by M.R. Merrick on Monday. I’m about 50% through it right now. I’m up to 21 books for the years and 16 for this round. Shouldn’t have a problem finishing 4 more before the end of the round.
  • Workout for 30 minutes/5 days a week – I’ve walked on the treadmill 4 days in the last week. And walked around the Fire Expo in Pittsburgh for a couple hours on Saturday.
  • Track calories every weekday – I’ve been doing a little better with this over the last week as well as getting better with controlling my snacking. It’s still something I need to work on though.

Now for my new goals for the rest of this round:

  • Send Slow Revenge to Beta Readers
  • Finish outlining Stained Snow
  • Finish 1st draft of Flames of Redemption
  • Edit Healing the Heart
  • Work all edits on Healing the Heart into computer copy
  • Write at least 5k on Stained Snow
  • Brainstorm ideas for #3 in Inner Demons series
  • Back stories for #3
