Sunday Summary: On a Roll

So, this has been quite a week. A very good one. Granted, Wednesday the words were coming pretty slow. Thursday, however, I could barely keep up with them. Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday I had over 4000 words each. Wednesday I fell just short of that. Even though I’d met my writing goals by Thursday, I ended up writing another almost 850 words on Friday. Yeah, it was definitely a good week. I spent most of Friday reading. I’m actually writing this up on Saturday. Before noon on Saturday.

My new method of getting to everything, getting to a word goal then switching to the next project, seems to be working well for me. We’ll see if that continues next month when I don’t have the JuNoWriMo sprints to keep me on track.

  • Write 15000 words between 6 projects – 16863/15000 words. WOOHOO! I’ll be raising this goal for the next week.
    • Protecting the Heart – 3188 – But, Dani easily adapted. Eva only wished she could as well, because she thought being out here would be quite the adjustment.
    • Ready When You Are – 2671 words – Kelan nodded, but he couldn’t speak. It was all too much. He was just afraid it wouldn’t be enough when it came down to it.
    • Paint Me a Picture – 3025 words – There was no way he was going to tell Cora the whole truth about this “sleepover.” And he prayed she’d stop asking questions before he ran out of safe answers. *Oh, Rylan, you’d better get used to that inquisitive little girl*
    • Shed Some Light – 2582 words – He looked back over his shoulder at her. “Let me make you dinner, Reza. I promise I won’t kiss you again.” She knew it was the right thing, but it was the worst promise she’d ever heard.
    • Break on Me – 2880 words – Gabriel wanted to call bullshit, but he was still off balance from those kisses. And the memory of his promise to Aaron started to seep back in now that Lora was gone, leaving him feeling slightly ashamed for acting on the feelings he’d always pushed away. He couldn’t let it happen again. *haha. Good luck with that one, Gabe*
    • In the Moonlight – 2517 words – I closed my eyes and hoped I’d dream of a red-haired girl instead of the ghost that may walk these halls. And with any luck, not find the two tangled up together in my head. I’d never had that kind of luck, though.
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 3000 words – 3004 words –“You wasted your time riding all the way over here. That ain’t none of your business.”“No, but I like Hawk. Haven’t quite made my mind up about you yet.”
  • Goin’ Down – get to 2000 words – 2018 words -I swore my stomach felt like it was dragging along the ground as we continued to walk. Nothing felt right about this day. I just hoped we’d get back home soon, so I could finally put the day behind me.
  • Snow White Twist – get to 1500 words – 1501 wordsMy breath caught in my throat as he came closer. Beautiful. Both of them were absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t look away. And as he came closer, his eyes seemed to come right to me. As if he was looking for me.
  • Read: Description – get to 40% – got to this point
  • Read: Finish Brokedown Cowboy(Maisey Yates), The Countess Conspiracy(Courtney Milan), A Court of Thorns and Roses(Sarah J Maas), One Week Girlfriend(Monica Murphy), Things I Can’t Forget(Miranda Kenneally), Harvard’s Education(Suzanne Brockman) Finished A Court of Thorns and Roses and really loved it Felt rather meh about One Week Girlfriend, actually ended up skimming though most of it just to find out what the “big, dark, dirty secret” was. Even though I’d had a good clue over what it was. And the ending irritated me so not planning on getting the next book. Really enjoyed Things I Can’t Forget, though. I finished Harvard’s Education and The Billionaire’s Inconvenient Obsession(Nadia Lee) yesterday. And started Diplomats and Fugitives(Lindsay Buroker). Oh, I have missed the Emperor’s Edge crew. I’m about 20% through it now.

All blue!!!!! Like I said, a really good week. Now for next week:

  • Write 18000 words between 6 projects(3k on each)
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 3500 words
  • Goin’ Down – get to 2500 words
  • Snow White Twist – get to 2000 words
  • Read: Description – get to 65%
  • Read: Diplomats and Fugitives(Lindsay Buroker), It Came Upon a Midnight Clear(Suzanne Brockman), Holding Strong(Lori Foster), How We Began(various), Ruled by Steel(S.M. Reine), Beautiful Demons(Sarra Cannon), & When a Scot Ties the Knot(Tessa Dare)

Writing Wednesday: Rainy Ramblings

My mind seems to be going every which way this morning, so I’m writing this up while writing my words for the day. Yesterday, rain kept threatening. So, the kids mostly stayed inside. It never did end up actually raining, though. Woke up this morning to it coming down. And looking at the weather, it’s supposed to be an all day thing. So, probably going to be another inside day. At least this might maybe calm down the pollen.

The pup seems to have a thing for our shoes, but this is the first one he’s actually destroyed

Writing has been going well so far this week. Not even counting the few hundred words I’ve written this morning, I’m over 8k for the week. My new routine seems to be working well for me. In two days, I met my weekly goal for 3/6 of my WiPs, not counting the side projects. Falling a little behind on my reading goal, but I’ll be able to catch up on that once all other goals are met for the week.

And since today is Wednesday, that means it’s time for more WIPPET FUN!! *throws confetti* Seriously, I’ve only had one cup of coffee so far this morning(though I’m about to go make the second). I’m working on Shed Some Light(Carlos & Tereza’s story) right now, so sharing 8 paragraphs from it. Things still aren’t looking up for Brent. In fact, they’re going to be getting even worse. The other guy in this scene, Roman, has a long history with both Carlos & Tereza. Of course, he’s also part of the reason Carlos once felt like Tereza betrayed/abandoned him.

“What can I do?”

“You’ve already done it, Carlos. You hired Tereza. She’ll fight for him,” he said, nodding at the woman who was approaching the bench now to argue their side of it. He doubted there was much she could do to counteract what Todd had said. Carlos almost believed his brother was guilty after listening to the other man. But, Tereza walked across the courtroom with her shoulders squared and her head high. Like she didn’t have a doubt in this world they’d win this case.

He almost believed that, too.

Carlos couldn’t take his eyes off her as she spoke. Damn, she was beautiful. Roman cleared his throat, and Carlos wondered if he’d said those words out loud. He cast a quick glance at Roman and saw him struggling to smother a smile. Yeah, he thought maybe he had. Shit. He’d have to be more careful about that.

“It’s not looking good,” Roman murmured as Tereza started to wind down.

He hadn’t needed Roman to tell him that. He might not have a lot of inside knowledge about the legal world, but even he could see the truth. “He’s gonna go away for a long time, isn’t he?”

“Not if Tereza has anything to say about it. Have faith in her.”

“I’ve always had faith in Reza, even when it felt like she’d betrayed me. But, even faith can only get us so far.”

Like I said, things aren’t looking too good for Brent right now. Is Tereza going to be able to prove Brent innocent? Will it matter?

Like I said, writing is going well so far this week. Well, until this morning. Joining in with some JuNoWriMo sprints and hoping that gets me back on track.

  • Write 15000 words between 6 projects – I’m through about 3.5 of these projects. Have written 9090 words so far. Should finish Shed Some Light’s goal today and be able to start on Break on Me.
    • Protecting the Heart – 2762 words
    • Ready When You Are – 2671 words
    • Paint Me a Picture – 2609 words
    • Shed Some Light – 1048 words so far.
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 3000 words – no progress yet
  • Goin’ Down – get to 2000 words – no progress yet
  • Snow White Twist – get to 1500 words – no progress yet
  • Read: Description – get to 40% – at about 26%
  • Read: Finish Brokedown Cowboy(Maisey Yates), The Countess Conspiracy(Courtney Milan), A Court of Thorns and Roses(Sarah J Maas), One Week Girlfriend(Monica Murphy), Things I Can’t Forget(Miranda Kenneally), Harvard’s Education(Suzanne Brockman) – finished Brokedown Cowboy(really enjoyed), and The Countess Conspiracy(So good), and am 33% through A Court of Thorns and Roses(enjoying so far).

Teaser Tuesday: JuNoWriMo Edition

So, next month(which starts tomorrow! Eek!), I’ll be participating in JuNoWriMo once again. I love doing these monthly writing challenges(if you haven’t figured that out by now). I’m not only working on one project for this, though. I actually have 6 different on-going projects right now(that doesn’t count the 3 that are in active revisions) and will be working on all of them during the month. For today, I’ll share a short summary and the last few lines I have written.

Protecting the Heart(BC Security #2):

Declan Portor, who has spent most of his life protecting others, is brought back to his first client, but saving her a second time could cost his own life.

His throat went thick at that, and he glanced back at Eva. He hadn’t been doing a great job of helping them. Barely staying one step ahead of trouble. He was going to have to change that. But Eva was smiling at them, like that thought wasn’t even bothering her. She trusted him, and he had to make sure he didn’t betray that by letting either of them get hurt.

“Can you read them to me? I think I’d like to know more about this Nighthawk. As long as he doesn’t fly around my apartment anymore.”

But, Dani grinned at him and put the rest of the books down. “I can do better. I made up a story about him. I can tell you that one.”

Declan settled back on the couch and gestured for her to climb onto his lap. He glanced back at Eva again, worried she wouldn’t like that. But, she was still smiling at them. “I’m listening,” he told Dani, bringing his attention back to her and trying to make sure his eyes stayed open.

Ready When You Are(Hunter Family #3)

Kelan Hunter has never quite fit, but just as he feels he may have found someone who accepts him as he is, they face blackmail and threats and are left wondering what will become of their lives.

There was that desperation again, and it tore at Kelan’s chest. “[xx], there’s nothing wrong with you. No matter who you’re attracted to and who you aren’t. Have you talked to your parents about this?” He certainly didn’t want to be the one to out the boy to them if they didn’t know already. But, someone should know what he was going through. Kelan hadn’t had anyone at that age, and he still hadn’t known just what he was then. Maybe if he’d talked to someone else, it would have saved a lot of years of questioning himself, though.

***

Paint Me a Picture(Gilbert, CO #4.75)

Artist, Rylan Stevens, wants to give single mother, Kirsten Matthews, and her daughter the life they deserve, but just as they get started, someone from her past returns.

Rylan took the hand Kirsten offered and let her lead him back to her bedroom. He’d seen the fear go through her eyes when he’d said he wanted everything. Was she really afraid of him? She had to know he would never hurt her. Not even once. So, it had to be something else.

He turned to her as they stepped into her bedroom doorway. He slid one hand up her neck to cup her cheek. “We don’t have to do this,” he told her. “We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.”

“I wouldn’t have invited you over if I didn’t want this, Ry,” she told him. “That’s not what scares me. I know it doesn’t have anything to do with you. It’s all me.”

Shed Some Light(Gilbert, Co #5)

When his brother is apparently framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Carlos has to turn to the one woman who could save or ruin them both.

Tereza grabbed her bag from the seat beside her and hurried out of the car. She was already running behind. She’d wanted to have a chance to stop and see Brent before the hearing. See if he would be at least a little more cooperative than the last couple meetings they’d had. But, her car hadn’t wanted to start, then after it finally had, she’d gotten stuck in traffic. She’d realized she wouldn’t have time to stop by the jail and get to court in time.

Like it would have done any good anyway. Brent refused to help her help him at all.

She slammed her car door shut and walked as quickly as she could without losing her footing on the icy parking lot. The last thing she needed was to show up in court with a sprained ankle. She did slip a couple times, but thankfully managed to not fall. Thankfully the sidewalk had been shoveled and salted, so she was able to move at a brisker pace once she hit it.

Break on Me(Kurztown #4)

Gabriel Saranno wants to honor his friend’s memory with his father’s latest construction project, but when that friend’s sister gets involved, with the project and him, he doesn’t know if he can hold on to a promise he made.

His house for dinner? Why had Lora agreed to that? Being alone with Gabriel Saranno had to be a mistake. A huge one at that.

But, still, instead of calling him, or at least the office since she didn’t have his personal number, she stood in her closet, trying to decide on an outfit to pack. They were just going over the presentation to give to the town at the next council meeting. It’s not like it was a date.

So why did she have to agonize so much over the choice?

“You’re being ridiculous, Lora,” she muttered. “Just grab something, so you can put the rest of your shit in the bag. You don’t need to impress Gabriel.” Not like she’d ever been able to anyway.

In the Moonlight

When Yasmin Reisner inherited her great-aunt’s house, it comes with more than she expected; an alleged ghost, a relentless realtor, and possibly the love of her life.

“I’ll see you in the morning then, Ms. Reisner.” She turned away,  but I reached out and put a hand on her arm. She stopped and waited for me to say something.

“It’s Yasmin,” I reminded her. “I told you to just call me Yasmin.” I didn’t need the formality.

“Yasmin then,” she said, and her smile nearly knocked my legs out from under me. “I’ll see you in the morning. I hope you have a more restful night.”

I watched her walk away and highly doubted that would happen. But, I might get some good dreams out of it. And I’d still call that a win.

Looking forward to working on all of these. Anyone else participating in JuNoWriMo this year? Any other writing challenges you like to participate in?

Sunday Summary: End of May

My week had a pretty rough start, but it’s ended up pretty well.

  • Flames of Redemption: finish searching through for filter words & fix
  • Flames of Redemption: send to CP
  • The Choice: make scene chart
  • Short story: write 1000 words
  • Read: The Immortal Rules(Julie Kagawa) – I downloaded this when it was free for iBooks, but the only way I can read it is on my phone. So, I keep forgetting about it. I’m going to try to finish it this week though.
  • Read: 500 Ways to Tell a Better Story(Chuck Wendig) – I’ve been working my way through this for this month. Going to try to finish it this week too.

A big difference from last week. Not sure if it was not having internet for half the week or what, but I had everything crossed off by Thursday. Probably a good thing since both kids were awake around 5 Friday morning(which is when I started typing this up. Like I said, I’m ahead). Doesn’t give me a lot of time to get things done. Not such a big deal since I’m caught up on everything, but between them fighting/having meltdowns because I gave the boy the wrong cereal(which was the only kind we had left), I wanted to run away by 6 a.m. Not a good sign. It’s calmed down now that the girl is off to school. Does not give me a lot of hope for when school gets out for summer next week though.

Anyways, I’m going to evaluate where I am on my goals for the round & then my progress for this month before setting up goals for next month.

  • Slow Revenge: Publish.
  • Short story: finish. This is based on some back story from Slow Revenge and plan to share either here or through newsletter. I’ve been posting this here on Fridays.
  • Stained Snow: Finish draft & get it revised done & sent to beta readers
  • Flames of Redemption: Revise & hopefully send it to CP(s)
  • East of Abilene: replot & rewrite – this has been taken off my goals
  • Guarding the Heart: finish 1st draft – also removed since I changed how I was working through my various WiPs
  • The Choice: Revise – finished 1st round of revisions & made up scene chart and notes for second round
  • Read 36 books(my 2nd quarter goal was 39 but I’ve already read 3 this month). I’ve already read 39 books since the beginning of April. Some are more of short stories, but I count all of them. Even listened to 2 books and starting the 3rd.
  • Knit: 6 projects – have finished 4: Snuggly Chatterbox hat, Imp cloth, First Fall Knit Hat, and Fred the Croc bib
  • Crochet 6 projects – finished 4 of these as well: Crochet puppy hat, Hello Kitty hat, Fierce Little Dragon, & Crochet Shark hat

I’ve finished pretty much everything I set out to do for this round. Although I changed the plan shortly after it started. This is, well, pretty normal for me. Decisive I am not.

Writing:

  • Stained Snow: Revise/send to beta readers
  • Flames of Redemption: Finish second round of revisions
  • Short Story: Finish

All of this has been accomplished. Even polished Flames of Redemption & sent it to my CP. After I finished the short story(that ended up not very short), I started another one. This one is about Lisa’s mom & stepdad’s story. I’m having fun with it. I don’t know exactly where it’s going, even though I know what happens.

Reading:

  • Listen to 1 audio book
  • Read 12 fiction books
  • Read 1 craft/research book

Listened to Altered(Jennifer Rush) and have started The Winner’s Curse(Marie Rutkoski). Have read 28 books(as of Friday morning) of varying lengths. And read Chuck Wendig’s 500 Ways to Tell a Better Story.

Crafting:

  • Knit 2 projects(to be decided)
  • Crochet 2 projects(to be decided)

Didn’t have a problem meeting this month’s goals. Next month’s might not be quite as easy. I’ve sent 2 WiPs to readers and the other one I was working on, I’m going to set aside before I do the next round of revisions. Next month, I’m going to be concentrating more on writing than revising. I have 4 projects I’ll be working on. 2 are in the 1st draft stage, 1 is ready for 1st round of revisions, and the last I’m just starting to plot. In July, I’ll be back to the one’s I was working on in May if I have them back from my readers. Or at least I’ll be working on The Choice if I don’t have the others back yet.

Writing:

  • Healing the Heart – read through & 1st round of revisions
  • Stained by Ashes – 1st draft(this is my JuNoWriMo project)
  • Flames of Renewal – 24 scenes(this will get me to about 75% according to current plotted scenes)
  • Brian’s Story – Plot *this isn’t the final title. it’s actually a prequel to The Choice. Well, kind of. The Choice has an alternating time line, and what happens in this one takes place between those 2 timelines. I didn’t plan to write this, but Brian(who was supposed to be a very, very minor character but wouldn’t stay in that role) has a story to tell as well. This is part of why I have so many stories. These characters just can’t remember their place. 😉
  • Rick & Leann’s story – finish(this is the short story I’ve been working on). This is going to be lowest on my priorities. So, it may or may not get done.

I know these goals are rather ambitious. I may not meet them all, especially with the girl’s school being done on Thursday. But, I am going to try.

Reading:

  • Listen: The Winner’s Curse
  • Read 11 fiction books(I’m including re-reading Shadow and Bone & Siege and Storm before Ruin and Rising comes out in this number even though they’re not new reads).
  • Read 1 craft/research book(to be decided)

Crafting:

  • Knit 2 projects(Schooner Hat & Fair Isle Scarf
  • Crochet 2 projects(Easiest Headwrap Ever & Easy Crochet Owl)

One of these days I’ll probably learn not to try to do so much. But, that day is obviously not today. 🙂 This week’s goals are:

  • Healing the Heart – Read through & make notes on scenes to add/cut
  • Stained by Ashes – 12k words
  • Flames of Renewal – Read through what I wrote in February(about 10k words, I think)
  • Brian’s Story – brainstorm
  • Rick & Leann – 500 words
  • Read: Gypsy(Trisha Leigh), Swords & Salt Collection(Lindsay Buroker), & Against All Odds(Angie McKeon)
  • Knit: Schooner Hat

Writing Wednesday: Winding Down

Not a whole lot going on in the last week. My daughter finished the school year last week. We had her graduation ceremony on Friday. I am so proud of the progress she’s made during her second year of Pre-K. My coffeemaker also stopped working last week. Well, not exactly stopped working. I got the Hamilton Beach Flexbrew(can do K-cups or regular coffee in it) about 3 months ago. It was the cheaper option out of the 3 I could find(HB, Mr. Coffee, and Keurig). Now, it will barely even brew half a cup. Well, couldn’t live without coffee, so I got some instant coffee at least until I can get it replaced. Had a birthday party to go to on Saturday but not much to do on Sunday.  It rained all day Monday & Tuesday, the first full days of summer vacation really. Last night, my daughter lost her first tooth. And was very excited for the tooth fairy to bring her 4 silver coins(quarters) this morning. Today, since my mother-in-law is on vacation this week, she came up and took us out to lunch then to a park in town. Then, we went out to the playground at the school. So, it took me longer to get things done today. Tomorrow may be the same because my mom’s having pictures done of all the grandkids. We’ll see what I get done.

As for the last week’s progress here:

  • Demons Rising: Write 12000 words – I’ve written about 11,000 words over the last week. Not quite to my goal, but still a good amount for me. Just moving into Act 2. The sprints at the JuNoWriMo hashtag have really been helping with this.
  • Slow Revenge: Finish reading through – Finished this on Thursday and compiled all my notes on Friday.
  • Slow Revenge: Start rewrites – through Chapter 3 so far. Working on a chapter a day right now.
  • Guarding the Heart: Finish back stories –  taking a little longer than planned with this one. I’m almost finished with the second one. Only have 1, maybe 2 more to do. Should have them done by the end of the round at least.
  • Knit: Finish Shimmer By Night Bag – another task that is taking me longer than planned. Since it uses a lighter weight yarn, it’s taking longer to get to the length needed for the body of the bag. Hoping to get it finished soon though.
  • Crochet: Finish Hairpin Lace Skinny Scarf – finished this earlier this week. And started a Penguin hat last night.

Goals for next week:

  • Demons Rising: Write 12000 words
  • Slow Revenge: Rewrites through Chapter 10
  • Guarding the Heart: Finish Back Stories
  • Knit: Finish Shimmer By Night Bag
  • Crochet: Finish Penguin Hat

May Goals Review

I usually don’t post on Sundays anymore, but I figured since it’s the beginning of the month, I’d do a review of my goals and progress during last month. And I’ll do a more in depth accounting of the last week’s goals on Wednesday.

May’s goals were:

  1. Finish first draft of Stained Snow – I finished this on 5/23. It ended up at 49413. A little long for a novella, but I’m sure there’s some I can cut and bring it down. It will probably still be a long novella though.
  2. Finish Flames of Redemption rewrites – This I finished on 5/29. And I brought it up from 55,500 words to just under 66,800. Still a bit on the short side for a novel. I’ll probably go through it again and see if there’s more to add, or it just may end up being shorter.
  3. Finish plotting Demons Rising – I finished this on 5/30. And started writing on the 31.
  4. Read Through Slow Revenge – Just got this started on 5/31. Have the first five chapters gone through and some notes taken. Mostly looking at the big picture changes rather than just the little things.
  5. Write 10,000 words for Demons Rising – Not even close. I was thinking I’d start writing earlier in the month. I managed 514 words on Friday. Then, I decided to join JuNoWriMo to try to push me through most of it.

Didn’t do too bad on May’s goals. Finished the main ones at least. Now, for June’s goals:

  1. Write 50,000 words on Demons Rising
  2. Read through Slow Revenge
  3. Slow Revenge Rewrites
  4. Re-plot Guarding the Heart
  5. Finish knitting 3 projects
  6. Finish crocheting 3 projects

I’ll fall short of my knitting and crochet goals for this round(I’d need to finish 7 and 6 each to meet it this month), but I know I’ve surpassed my reading goals. And I know I wouldn’t be able to get 13 more projects finished.
