Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Y/Why”

“You can’t be here,” Jonas said, wrapping his fingers around his phone and bringing it closer to him. Who should he call, though? He didn’t want to bring his mom or sister here if this man meant danger for any of them.

“Yet I’m here,” Isaac’s father said with a sneer for Jonas. “Are you going to come over here and stop me.”

Yes, that was exactly what he wanted to do. But, he knew he couldn’t. From the gleam in the man’s eyes, he knew that, too. He didn’t want to take his gaze off him, afraid he’d strike again. But, he needed to do something. He dropped his gaze quickly and brought up recent calls. His brother’s wasn’t the first one on the list, but it was easy to find. He tapped on it to make the call then flicked his gaze up again.

“Your boyfriend obviously wants to get both of you killed.” Isaac’s father was already coming around the couch. Jonas could hear his brother’s voice through the phone, though. He knew he didn’t need to say anything. Toby would hear what was going on. He would come. Isaac’s father jerked the phone from Jonas’ hand and threw it across the room. Jonas didn’t see where it landed, but it didn’t matter.

“You shouldn’t have done that.” Jonas didn’t have a chance to answer before pain rushed through his face. . Another blow sent pain screaming up his leg. The room spun around him, and all he could grasp was Isaac calling his name.

“Why do you do this, Dad?” Isaac asked, as Jonas tried to cling to consciousness. “Why?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Uh oh. I’ve known this moment would happen from the time I started the story(it’s one of the only parts I did know). Getting there I wasn’t so sure about. But, we’re there now. And I managed to work it into today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt of theming the post with a word starting with “y” and either starting or ending with “why”. I kind of cheated on the first part, but I started each paragraph with a y-word.
Writing Wednesday: Warm Up
It’s finally started to warm up here. It was really nice Monday. Nice enough I took the pup(ok, he’s 2.5 so he’s not a puppy anymore.) for a walk. It was going pretty well. Then, we walked past a yard with four dogs running around. There was a toy poodle, Chihuahua, yorkie, and another small dog. The three smallest came right into the road after us. And there was my dog, who is at least twice the size of any of these dogs, cowering away from them. And they’re running in circles around him. He’ll jump all over our lab, who is quite a bit bigger than him. But, these little things had him terrified. I was going to come back up the road, but decided to take another route to avoid them. It ended up being a little over a mile walk.
It was raining yesterday, so we didn’t go for a walk. And today looks to be the same. But hopefully we’ll get in at least one more walk this week.
When he doesn’t have a person to cuddle with, he’ll take a pillow
Writing’s going fairly well this week too. Steady at least. I’ll get more into that below.
For now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday again. Today is the 25th, so I have 2 snippets with 5 paragraphs each. First up is Jonas & Isaac. Isaac’s shown up at Jonas’ mom’s house, and they’re sitting on the couch together.
“I’m heading out,” Arcelia called from the hallway. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
“But, Arce,” Jonas said, putting a whine in his voice even as he winked at Isaac, “that doesn’t leave us many options. You never do anything.
“Exactly my point,” Arcelia said primly. “I sit on that couch, too.”
Isaac snorted out a laugh and leaned into Jonas. “It surprises me how much I’ve missed the bickering between you two,” he said after they heard the front door close.
Jonas laughed and turned into him. “that’s not bickering. It’s some friendly sibling teasing. I didn’t realized how much I missed her while I was gone,” he admitted. “Emails and video chats just weren’t the same.”
And from Flames of Knowledge:
“Silas made them.”
Ames glanced over at him and saw a faint pink tinge to his cheeks. And, yes, his ears were certainly red. “You’re blushing. Why are you blushing?”
“No reason,” Jeremiah insisted. “Not a single reason at all.”
Yet, Ames found their lips curling up. “Really? It certainly sounds like there’s a reason.”
“Nope,” Jeremiah said firmly, though his cheeks reddened more. “I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Silas didn’t…never mind,” he said quickly, obviously realizing he was about to give himself away.
So what exactly did Silas do while making this treat that Jeremiah brought to work? I’ll just leave that to your imaginations. 😉
Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Spoke”
When Isaac didn’t answer him, Jonas started to worry. Who could be at the door that Isaac wouldn’t just call back to tell him? Half-formed theories raced through his head, but he put them all down and struggled to sit up. His crutches were back in his room and his leg wasn’t within reach. But, he still needed to figure out what was going on.
But, even as he’d slid to the edge of the couch, Isaac stumbled back into the living room. “What is going on?” Jonas demanded, but Isaac didn’t look at him.
Isaac’s voice shook when he spoke. “I already told you that you can’t be here. You need to leave before the police get here.”
“You wouldn’t call the cops on your own father, Isaac. I know you better than that.”
Jonas tried to shoot up to his feet at that voice, one he hadn’t heard since he’d sat with Isaac in that courtroom seven years ago. He’d forgotten he couldn’t do that anymore, though. He grabbed for the arm of the couch before he could tumble to the floor.
Isaac glanced over his shoulder at Jonas. Their eyes met for a moment, and it was all Isaac’s father needed to strike.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Uh oh. Not looking so good for these two, is it? This week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was to use “spoke” somewhere, in some form, in your post. Bonus points if you don’t use it in the first sentence. This follows right after last week’s.

Writing Wednesday: Staying on Track

I’m not quite sure how to categorize this week. I’ve been making some progress. Nothing too exciting. But, I’m staying fairly well on track with my goals.

Monday my husband had a job interview. They still haven’t started back at his current job. Usually they’re back to work by early in April. They’re thinking it will be May before they start back now, and as of right now, they don’t have many jobs lined up. So, he’s looking for something that will be year round. Dealing with unemployment for at least four months out of the year is getting stressful. He’s got an application in at another place, too, so hopefully he’ll hear something from one of them.

The kids brought home report cards Friday. Other than an 89 in math, the girl had nearly perfect grades(99% in writing, 100 in reading/vocab, science/social studies, & word study). The boy had grades all in the “advanced” range(93-100%) in math, reading, and word study. And proficient through his writing rubric. So, they’re both doing good.

I’m doing a double shot for WiPPet Wednesday again. Today is 4/18, so I took 4+18=22. So, I’ll take one 2 from the 22 for each project. First, we have more from Jonas & Isaac. Isaac is on his way to Jonas’ now. And thinks he sees someone following him.

“Letting your fear get to you again,” he murmured. He needed to stop that. His father was not following him through the city. He’d only wanted to frighten Isaac the other day.

And it had worked. He couldn’t let it anymore.

Is Isaac right? Or does he have reason to worry?

And for Flames of Knowledge. This is from the next scene from what I shared from last week, in Ames’ POV now.

They doubted Connor ever would, especially with the family he came from. So, there was no point going there. No matter how cute he looked with those glasses on, and was that paint in his hair?
Ames nearly laughed at the sight but turned away instead. Better that way. No need to get their hopes up only to have them dashed as so many people had before. Sometimes living on their own was just the easier way to go, even if Ames wouldn’t mind the closeness they’d seen between couples. Maybe it just wasn’t meant for them.

Connor had a very similar thought in the scene before. And they may both just be a little bit wrong. 🙂

Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Mon”

Isaac opened the door to a monster. His mouth went instantly dry, and he went to swing the door shut again. But, his father stuck his foot between it and the frame and wrapped a hand around the edge of the door.

“You can’t be here,” Isaac said, taking another step back. He had to get him to leave. He didn’t know exactly why he was here, but Isaac knew it couldn’t be anything good.

The laugh his father let out sounded almost demonic. “Did you really think a piece of paper would keep me from getting what I’m owed?”

“I don’t owe you a damn thing,” Isaac said. “All you’ve ever given me was pain. And you can’t be here.”

But, his father pushed the door in, sending Isaac a step back. “Who is it, Isaac?” Jonas called from the living room. He needed to get his father out of here before Jonas came to investigate. The two of them coming face to face would only make things worse. Jonas would think he had to protect Isaac, and Isaac didn’t even want to think about what his father would do to Jonas when he stepped between the two of them.

No. He couldn’t let any of that happen. He just had to get his father out of here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was to use “mon” either as part of a word or on its own. I’m getting right up to this point in the writing of Jonas & Isaac’s story. If you couldn’t tell, Isaac’s father is not a nice person. And this is definitely leading up to some trouble.
Writing Wednesday: Going Well
This week is going well so far. I slept later than usual(so after 5 in the morning) on Sunday. Thankfully, with me changing my schedule(only trying to get through the first half of the draft instead of the whole draft), I was actually ahead. So, it didn’t matter too much. And I was able to meet all my other goals as well as getting ahead on Tuesday’s goal.
And since then things have been going well. Making steady progress on the words. And on the other goals as well. I’ll get more into that later in this post. For now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday again!! Like last week, I’m going to share from two projects. It’s 4/11, so I’m taking each 1 times the 4, so I’ll have 4 paragraphs from Jonas & Isaac and Flames of Knowledge. First up, Jonas & Isaac:
“You can ask for anything, Jonas,” she said, an almost gentle tone to her voice. “From what I’ve seen, you have a very supportive family. They’d likely do anything to help you. But, you do have to ask or how do they know what you need?”
He felt a pang somewhere near his heart. How could he do that? How could he let them know just how weak he was feeling? After his mother had fought to get where she was now. His father never would have been this close to succumbing. Jonas was doing nothing but letting his father’s memory down.
“I don’t need anything,” he insisted. “I’m good.”
He would be. He promised himself he’d find a way to be just fine.
Oh, Jonas, you stubborn, stubborn man. And you may not have known your father quite so well if you believe all that crap in your head(which his brother tells him a bit later).
And now for Flames of Knowledge. We get our first glimpse of Ames, the other main character, here, but we’re still in Connor’s POV.
He stopped when he saw someone else heading up into the field. His heart beat a little faster, knowing instantly who it was. They didn’t even look his way, though. He could put himself in their path, of course. It would only take a couple steps to do that.
As if they had heard his thoughts, their head jerked up and they met his eyes. He lifted his hand to wave, but they were already turning the other way. Damn it.
Connor still hadn’t figured out what he’d done wrong, but every time Ames saw him, that was their reaction. He wished he knew what he could do to change it. Probably nothing.
He didn’t know why he kept trying.
This obviously isn’t their first meeting. Why does Ames turn away from him? Was it something he did? Or something else?
And now for how my goals are going:
Stream of Consciousness Saturday: Passive/Aggressive
Passive?” Isaac asked, running his thumb down the side of Jonas’ face. “That’s not something I’d ever call you.”
“Even if all I did was lay here?”
“Oh, the horror,” Isaac said, pressing his lips to the corner of Jonas’ mouth. “Laying here and letting me take advantage of your body. That is just awful, isn’t it?”
That at least brought a laugh out of Jonas. “You’re terrible. You know that, right?”
“Perfectly terrible,” Isaac said, smiling against Jonas’ throat as he buried his mouth there. “It’s why you love me.”
Jonas wrapped his arms around Isaac and pulled him even closer, if that was possible. “That’s not the only reason.”
He didn’t deny it. They were making progress, at least. Isaac started trailing kisses farther down Jonas’ chest but an aggressive banging at the door stopped him. Jonas groaned. “No one is supposed to be here today.”
Isaac pressed a kiss to Jonas’ chin before rolling off him and pulling his pants on. “I’ll go see who it is.”
“No. It’s my mom’s house. I’m the one living here. I should answer the door.”
“Just relax and stay right there. I’ll see who it is and send them on their way. Then, I’ll be right back to you, and we can pick up where we left off.”
Jonas laughed again, his eyes shining bright. It was better than the shadows Isaac kept chasing away, but he wouldn’t stop trying to do that, no matter what it took.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday was to use passive and/or aggressive somehow. I managed to work both in. This is close to where I am in the writing of their story. I’m actually currently writing what happens just before this part. I’m sure you can figure that out. But, who’s at the door?

Writing Wednesday: Camp Time

Camp NaNoWriMo, that is. I started on Sunday, although I only wrote 275 words then. I’m working on Flames of Knowledge for this one. I’m hoping to finish the whole first draft this month, but we’ll see how that goes. Next month, I’ll be doing Story a Day again, as well as trying to draft Green Hills & Smoky Fields 2(I really need to come up with titles for the individual novels in this series), June should be for Nowhere to Run, then July’s camp will be Craving You(the next in my Kurztown series). Of course, I just started plotting that one, but I shouldn’t have any problem having it ready to write by then. Of course, if I find finishing a draft in one month too much, I’ll have to stretch out that schedule. We’ll see.

Kids go back to school today after almost a whole week off. It wasn’t too bad, they mostly do their own thing, so I was still able to get a good bit of work done. I’ve needed the writing after spending Easter at my mom’s. I could get into everything that was said there that got me worked up. I just wished I had an actual backbone and my voice didn’t seize up when I’m upset. But, then everyone probably would have piled on me, because of course no one else’s opinion is ever right, and I just don’t know how things really are. Because my thoughts and feelings are invalid if they don’t match everyone else’s. And at 33, I still haven’t unlearned that it’s just easier to keep my mouth shut apparently.

Anyway, my kids were really cute for Easter. They both picked out their Easter outfits on their own.

And I’ve been able to bury myself in words and throw some of my feelings into the writing. Which is probably why Ames vented about their family to a friendly listening ear(Nolan, who keeps popping up in the stories despite already having his happy ending ;)).

It’s WiPPet Wednesday time again!! I’m cheating a little today, maybe. It’s 4/4, so I’m taking 4 paragraphs from 2 different projects to share. First, we have Jonas & Isaac(Jonas is having a dark moment and just told Isaac he shouldn’t be there):

“Yes, I should.” He slid his fingers through Jonas’ hair. “We said we were going to move forward together. How can we do that if I’m not here with you?”

“I’m just going to drag you into Hell with me.”

The words made him want to cry. He remembered thinking the same thing years ago, only with their positions reversed. He hadn’t realized then how much the words must have cut into Jonas, because now he felt like he was bleeding. But, Jonas had not left his side then, and Isaac wasn’t going to, either.

“Then, we’ll take the devil on together.”

Will Jonas get through this, or at least let Isaac help him?

And now for a snippet of Flames of Knowledge. 4 paragraphs again.

Connor laughed at that. He’d seen the two men interact before, and if he hadn’t known there was no blood between them, he would have assumed they truly were brothers. “Where is the little guy anyway? I figured you’d at least be giving your wife a break today.”
Nolan just laughed. Then, he said, “With all your family here today, did you really think either of us would even get to hold our son?”
Connor let out a huff of breath that could maybe have been called a laugh. He should have figured that. “I guess I should make my rounds before I get accused of being anti-social again.” He was here, wasn’t he? Shouldn’t that count for something?
Nolan clapped him on the shoulder. “I believe your mom and aunts took him down to the house. Shouldn’t be too hard to find him.”

I know exactly how you feel, Connor.

Do you want to see more of Connor(and eventually Ames) or should I go back to Jonas & Isaac?

Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Bun”

Bunny! Bunny!”

Jonas glanced over as the little form raced toward him. He couldn’t help but smile. “Did the Easter bunny come to your house this morning, Cat?” he asked his niece.

She nodded and thrust something toward him. He took the stuffed dog with bunny ears and grinned. “A bunny dog, huh? That’s just about perfect.” He handed her the stuffed animal back and looked up at the steps coming toward them. He grinned at his sister-in-law.

“Looks like the Easter bunny left you something, too,” he said.

Denise laughed and set a hand on her very swollen stomach. “Not quite yet. Still another month left, though I don’t see how that’s possible.”

Catarina clambered up onto the couch beside him and pressed a kiss just below his knee as she did every time she saw him. “Thanks, Cat. Feels better already,” he said as he did each time. Then, the girl was off the couch and running off to see someone else and show them what the Easter bunny had brought her.

“Isaac was pulling in just behind us,” Denise told him. “He should be in here soon.”

Good. Isaac had been so busy with classes the last week, Jonas had barely seen his boyfriend. Then, he was right there, a bunch of lilies in his hand. “Flowers?” Jonas asked. “For me?”

“Nope,” Isaac said after a long kiss. “Brought these for your mom. Just couldn’t wait for this.”

Good because Jonas had been doing enough waiting. He grabbed the cane beside the couch and levered himself up to his feet. Walking on the prosthetic was getting easier at least. Isaac stepped in right beside him, and they walked toward the kitchen together.

This week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was to use bun either as part of a word or as a word on its own. Since it is Easter weekend, I figured a little piece of these characters during Easter worked well. I hope everyone that celebrates has a good Easter.

Writing Wednesday: Adjusting

I decided to adjust my writing routine a bit this week. Actually, I’ve already done it twice. Lately I’ve been bouncing between projects in 5 minute intervals. Which is a good method when I can’t seem to focus on anything. But, I didn’t feel like doing that anymore. So, on Monday, I decided to randomly choose which project I’d work on during each of my five hourly writing sessions. And that worked pretty well. And yet, I decided to change it up again on Tuesday. Then, I decided to work through each of my goals for the day before moving on to the next. So, I worked on a scene for High on Loving You first. That took the whole first session(it ended up being a long scene). I’d gotten ahead on my editing for the week, so I skipped over that one. During the second session, I finished filling in the antagonist sheet, did the first pass through on the short story I just finished drafting(which means basically filling in details I left blank during drafting), added 200 words to another side project, and wrote a few lines in the notebook for Jonas & Isaac’s story. I think this is going to be the way I handle my goals. At least for now.

And over the weekend, I did get my hair cut. Woo hoo! Last time was back at the beginning of November, and 4.5 months is way too long for me to go. So, now it’s short again. And I’m happy. The girl got hers trimmed & the boy got his cut as well and some dyed spikes(which washed out in the shower that night). And we picked up our new glasses.

And now it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday again!! Woohoo! 😀 Jumping ahead into the middle(ish) of the next scene. They’re talking about a kid(almost 18, but still a kid) who comes by the center where Isaac works. I have 25 sentences today(3-28).

“Dee wants to keep working for Connie at the ranch after they graduate. Kevin wants them to go to college. Dee doesn’t have any desire to even give it a try.”

Jonas knew what that was like. His mother had desperately wanted him to go to college like Arcelia planned to. Which was why he hadn’t told anyone before going to the recruitment office. He hadn’t been cut out for more school but had been afraid his mom’s disappointment would sway him from his plan.

“Maybe I could talk to Dee.”

“They don’t want to join the army, either. They want to work with horses.”

“No, I got that. I meant about parental expectations you just can’t bring yourself to meet.”

Isaac stared at him for a long moment. “You’ve got to be kidding. Your mother has never been anything but proud of you, even back in high school. You didn’t even have to do anything to get that from her.”

Jonas shifted in his seat, glancing away from Isaac. “I let her down. She gave up so much so we’d have it better than she did, even better than what she’d given Toby. I could have gotten a scholarship. She’d already started telling people both me and Arcelia would be going to college. I thought I could see her heart break when I finally told her I wasn’t. But, I was afraid I would have let her down more if I did.”

Apparently it was the day for being honest and vulnerable. He was ready for that to be over.

Or, Jonas, you could keep being open and have less problems in the future. Hah. Not this stubborn boy. 😉 And just a note: his mother has never said he let her down, likely never even felt it. That’s pretty much all in his head/his own fears.

And even though RoW80 is on break right now(starting back up 4/2 for the next round), I have my usual mid-week check-in. Break? I don’t think I know the meaning of that word. 😉
