Writing Wednesday: Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, here in the States at least. One thing I’m thankful for: We never host Thanksgiving dinner, so I don’t have to worry about doing a special cleaning of the house or cook or have to deal with people in my house. We’re going to my mom’s for the day and may stop at husband’s aunt’s on the way home. I’ll be taking a book/my kindle so I can hide away when I can’t take socializing any more.

Another thing I’m thankful for: We have internet that works again! Our old service kept going out(the modem said it was connected but nothing would work). I’d basically have to only have 1 thing connected at a time for it to work and if I connected my phone, it would completely go out. So, husband called the local cable company we used to use and he came Monday and reconnected our service. Now, I won’t have to go through all my data package on my phone in a month(it was pretty close last month).

Now, I just have to get a new wireless keyboard it seems. Mine periodically stops working. If it sits for a length of time, it won’t type when I try to use it again. Loosen one of the batteries and put it back in and it works again. I thought batteries might be low, but I changed them out yesterday and it was still doing it. So, yeah, I think it’s time for a new one.

And now it is time for WiPPet Wednesday!! I have more of Jonas & Isaac for you today. I had thought of rewinding and sharing a Thanksgiving scene for today. Instead I’ll share a scene with something Jonas is thankful for. I have 7 paragraphs today(22-11+2+0+1-7).

He used the crutches to keep himself steady as he walked–actually walked! He was still having trouble believing that– out of the office. The sky had dumped snow on the city earlier that day, but the sidewalk was shoveled and parking lot cleared. A dark blue car idled at the curb.

Jonas took careful steps toward it. The last thing he wanted to do was fall out here and mess something up already. When he reached the car, he opened the door and caught Konner grinning at him. “Looking good there,” Konner said. “Of course, you always do. But especially so with that walking.”

Jonas felt his face warm. It always did when Konner said things like that. When he flirted, with Jonas himself or Isaac. But, he just slid his crutches into the backseat and climbed in. “Thanks for agreeing to give me a ride. I wanted to show the whole family together.”

“Not a problem, man. Glad you were able to get it today.”

So was he. Jonas had thought he’d be able to take the leg home the week before when he first went in for the fitting. But, they’d had to make some adjustments. So he’d had to wait.

“Did you tell Isaac what you were doing?” He didn’t know why it mattered. But, he wanted to be the one to show him. Over the last two weeks, some sort of connection had formed between them again. Not what they’d had before, but maybe they could at least be friends.

He kept telling himself he could be content with that.

Sure, Jonas, you can believe that all you want. πŸ˜‰

Writing Wednesday: In the Middle

We’ve come to the middle of the month. I’m halfway to my NaNoWriMo(or was very close to it as of Tuesday night. Won’t have a problem hitting it today Hit it this morning). I’m at the halfway point of Whatever It Takes(and nearly ready to outline Act 3). And that’s about all the middle stuff I can come up with. πŸ™‚

On Sunday we went to a birthday party for one of the boy’s friends. His older brother is also in the girl’s grade, and their father is friends with my husband, so both kids were invited. The birthday party was at Chuck E Cheese, which is basically my personal version of Hell. Up until now I’ve gotten away from having to go to any parties there. Usually only 1 kid is invited, so I take the other one to do something else(if the girl stays with me, we usually go to the bookstore, the boy prefers Toys R Us). It was…not as bad as I feared. We followed the kids around a bit at first, and there were too many people among all the games. But when we sat down, it wasn’t quite as…socially claustrophobic(this is the term I used before I knew social anxiety was a thing). I felt on edge the whole time we were there, but I survived, so there’s that. And the kids had a good time.

During last week’s writing of Green Hills & Smoky Fields(really need to come up with a different title since book 1 takes place all in the Green Hills part), a new character popped up, surprising me(If you want, you can meet him in the Stream of Consciousness Saturday post I have linked below). And he has me adding quite a few words and scenes I hadn’t planned on into it. And it also already has me thinking about what might happen in book 2. Except I’m not even halfway through this one yet. Oops?

And now that it’s Wednesday, it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday!! A blog hop, hosted by the amazing Emily Wrayburn for us to share a snippet from a current Work in Progress that someone pertains to the date. I’m still sharing from Jonas & Isaac’s story. I have the last 6 paragraphs(1+5 for the day) from the scene I started sharing from last week.

“You did say you wanted to know why he keeps coming by, hanging out when you’re not busy. But, he leaves just as that tension starts snapping between you.”

That wasn’t quite what he’d said. And Jonas did seem to get enjoyment out of helping the kids. But, there had to be more to it, didn’t there? “I don’t need a private investigator for those answers. I don’t need those answers.” Wasn’t sure he wanted them.

“You keep telling yourself that, Isaac. I can see the truth. Hell, everyone around here sees the truth.”

“I will,” Isaac said, ignoring the last two statements. “Thank you very much for your permission.”

Konner snorted again and bumped his shoulder against Isaac’s. Then, he started rambling on about…something. Isaac barely followed the conversation. Because why did Jonas keep coming by? Was it really only about helping? Or something more?

He shouldn’t care about the answer. But, he did. and he was afraid finding out would destroy him.

Will Isaac get those answers? Would he really like what they were?

Writing Wednesday: Plugging Along

Pup has priorities straight. Snuggled up on a cold day

That feels like all I’m doing. Just making my word count for NaNo each day. Except Sunday. I didn’t do any writing then. Stories like those in my Flames series spoil me for ones like Green Hills and Smoky Fields(going to be series title, but haven’t come up with one for first book). These words are coming out slower, which isn’t likely a bad thing. Just makes it all feel so slow and may not have made it the best choice for NaNo. But, I’ll keep going with it.

Pup chewed a hole in girl’s blanket, so we had to patch it up. My sewing will win no awards.

And my sinuses are starting to feel plugged up. Just when I thought I might avoid the cold everyone else in the house seems to have gotten. Blah. But, at least I had a pretty good birthday on Sunday. Got my strawberry banana pancakes at IHoP, went to barnes & noble and got They Both Die at the End(Adam Silvera) & the girl used up my gift card on one of her books. Then, we went to the used book store and I got three more books(Hot Target – Suzanne Brockmann, Fatal Consequences – Marie Force, & Before We Kiss – Susan Mallery). Stopped at Michael’s and got yarn for my other crochet project for the month(still not the exact yarn called for, different brand, but I think it will work. Got my hair cut, got groceries, and picked up some strawberry and orange wine. Had a glass of the strawberry Sunday night. It was GOOD. I’m not much of a wine drinker(not much of a drinker at all, really), but this stuff could change my mind.

After having my hair short for over a year, it still surprises me how much better I feel right after a cut.

And now it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday. Which means it’s time for more Jonas & Isaac! They may be a little upset with me. They are *this close* to kissing, and I keep leaving them hanging. You’ll get there, boys. Just a little longer. πŸ˜‰ But, I’m not quite there in snippets yet(need to have some room so I don’t catch up to myself). Anyway, today I have 10 paragraphs(1+1+8) from the next scene after last week’s.

“What do you think his motive is?” Konner shuffled some papers on the desk but didn’t look up at Isaac.

He didn’t even need to ask who Konner was talking about. Still, he didn’t feel like addressing it either. Instead, he just asked, “What are we, starring on a cop show now?”

Konner laughed, probably more than the statement warranted. He’d been like that a lot lately. Of course, Konner had always been able to find more humor in every day things than Isaac had. And it wasn’t because he’d had an easier life.

He hadn’t. But, he apparently had something that was broken in Isaac. He ruthlessly shoved those thoughts–planted there by his father so many years ago, even though he’d thought he’d uprooted them by now–and turned back to the discussion. “Anyway, i thought it was your brother who was the investigator now.” And Konner had encouraged Jonas to stick around and help. Why the suspicion now?

Konner smirked. “I could set Maddix on him if you want. A little surveillance, and we’d have some answers.”

Isaac shook his head. “I’m not setting your private investigator brother on my ex-boyfriend. He hasn’t done anything.”

“Last time I saw him, he looked like he wanted to be your current boyfriend once again.”

Isaac knew that wasn’t true, but he smirked at Konner and asked, “Jealous?”

Somethine flashed through Konner’s eyes, but he just grinned back at Isaac. “What would I be jealous of? I’m single and loving it, babe.”

Isaac knew when Konner used that pet name, he was covering something up. And Konner, single? Yeah, that never lasted long. “You are chronically falling in love, Kon. Single isn’t a state you exist in well.”

So, is Konner jealous? Or is there something else going on with him. And obviously, Jonas’ plan to stay away from the center, and Isaac, isn’t going so well. πŸ˜‰

We had some visitors this morning. Chicken nuggets, anyone?(Kidding, kidding)

Writing Wednesday: NaNo Time!

Yes, that’s right! It’s November 1! That actually means a couple things for me. First, it’s the start of another NaNoWriMo. Of course, that’s pretty much every month for me(there are only 3 months I haven’t written at least 50k, one of those I was only short about 50 words). But, I still get excited about the official challenge every year. And this year, I’m actually not being a rebel and working on several projects/something already in progress like the last few years. As of this morning, I have a bright blank slate to work on. πŸ˜€ I tried to stay up to start it at midnight. Yeah, I made it to 10. :/ This should not be a surprise to anyone. I used to be able to stay up late and get up early. Anymore it’s only the getting up early part.

November 1 also means yesterday was Halloween! Okay, I don’t really get that excited about it. We live out in the country, and we don’t really decorate for it. Who would see it anyway? But, the kids like dressing up, and we take them into town to visit houses. We don’t do themed costumes(unless the kids want to be something from the same thing). One year they were Elsa and Olaf from Frozen. So, that worked out. This year the boy picked Marshall(from Paw Patrol). The girl wanted to be Everest(also Paw Patrol) but we couldn’t find a costume in her size. She ended up being the Pink Power Ranger. That was actually surprising because she usually rolls her eyes when the boy watches one of the many versions of it. But, it was her choice. We walked for a little less than an hour, and they got quite a bit of candy. But, it was pretty cold out(no snow at least, so that’s something).

The third thing November means is that it’s almost my birthday! Yes, on Sunday, I’m going to be the big 3-3(wait, is that a big deal? Probably not). Another year older. Woohoo(I mean that both sincerely and sarcastically, if that’s possible). No big plans, though I do hope to get my hair cut again this weekend(it’s getting shaggy and driving me a bit nuts).

But, for now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday!! And time to visit with Jonas & Isaac again. Since it’s my birthday month, I’m taking the digits of my upcoming age and adding them together(3+3 = 6) and giving you 6 paragraphs from the next scene. Jonas is trying to make sense of what happened in that moment between him and Isaac and what to do about it.

Then, Isaac had shown up. He hadn’t realized he’d been there so long. And just a hand on his leg had sent him spinning. God, he was a loser. How many times would he have to tell himself it would be better to stay away from Isaac before his body believed it?

“Are you okay?” his mom asked. “You didn’t push yourself too hard again, did you?”

“No, mama,” Jonas said. “I mean, I didn’t. I’m fine.”

“Then, why are you so quiet? You’ve been excited the last times I picked you up. Today you are subdued. What is different?”

“Nothing.” Everything. But, he couldn’t even explain that to himself, let alone his mother. Maybe he was just going to have to stay away from the youth center until he got his head and feelings sorted out.

Yeah, that was what he’d do.

Sure, you will, Jonas. Sure you will. πŸ˜‰

And now for how I finished up the month of October:

  • Green Hills & Smoky Fields – Story Toolkit, Outline Act 1 in Scrivener – Outlined first 5 chapters(Act 1) on Monday. Chapter 5 has about 8 scenes in it currently, so it will probably be split into at least 2 chapters, maybe more. I’ll outline acts as I finish one up. On Target

      • But, she shook her head. She wasn’t sure she could count on that. And was afraid it would just mean she’d end up hurting him more in the future. She had to put an end to it before that happened. But, she wasn’t sure how to say any of that to her dad, let alone Austin. But, since he was now heading toward her, she’d have to figure it out.
    • Whatever It Takes – 465 words
      • Jayla could only stare at Carisa as she finally wound down. She just didn’t have any words. What could she say to that?
        Absolutely nothing.
    • High on Loving You – 2685 words
      • She just shrugged one shoulder and climbed into her seat. He waited for her to buckle in before he closed her door and climbed into the front again. He flexed his hands around the steering wheel a few times before finally turning the key in the ignition. Raina didn’t speak on the drive home. Morgan thought about trying to pry answers about her day out of her, but he’d never had to do that before. Usually she volunteered all the information he could want. Even more than that most days.
When they got to the house, she walked just as quietly into the house and went back to her room. She didn’t even ask him for a snack. She always had a snack when she got home from school. He needed to get to the bottom of what was wrong before his little girl faded away into nothing more than a ghost.
He just didn’t even know where to start.

  • Knit: GENEie Hat – Started this Tuesday(10/3?). 6/6 rounds of ribbing done. 53/53 rounds of cable pattern done. Finished it Thursday(10/26) Bullseye!
  • Crochet: Dreamy Scarf – I need β€œDreamy” yarn for this(I could probably use another kind, but the pattern is based on using this yarn) and I haven’t found it yet. So haven’t started this. It will get moved to November’s goals.
  • Since I don’t have the yarn for my other crochet project, I decided to do up some “prayer squares”. They were talking about these in church the other week, and I figured it would be easy enough if I could find a pattern(there are quite a few out there). So started one on Monday. Have 6/20 rows done.

So, it was a pretty good month overall, even though there were a couple things i didn’t get to. I seem to be finding the best way to organize my day, and those Mellow Mondays are going well(though my definition of Mellow is apparently broken. haha).

So, now to look forward to November:

Stream of Consciousness Saturday: Which/witch/wich

Which one is your sister?” Maddix asked from beside Jonas.

Jonas glanced over at him then back out toward the people crowding into the center. There were devils, superheroes, other things he couldn’t even make out. And there were the witches. His lips twitched. “I don’t think she bothered with a costume.”

Maddix narrowed his eyes then elbowed Jonas in the side. He was one of the few who’d never thought he had to treat Jonas carefully because of his leg. And Jonas appreciated that. “That’s not a nice thing to say about your own twin. She seems like a very nice person.”

“Who says witches can’t be nice?” Jonas asked, smiling a little. “It’s not nice to stereotype, Maddix. Don’t you know that?”

“Shut up,” he said, elbowing Jonas again. “You know me better than that.Β  And you’re the one that said it. Like I said, she seems nice.”

“I’m surprised you think that when she’s barely given you the time of day the last year. No matter how much you try to get her attention.”

Maddix shrugged a shoulder. “Not like she owes me anything. Doesn’t mean I can’t still try.”

“I thought Konner said you were into that Maribel anyway.”

Maddix scoffed. “Right. The boss’s daughter. I see that working out for me.”

Jonas felt Isaac slide up beside him, sandwiching him in. Not something he was going to complain about. “What are you guys talking about?” he asked.

“My love life,” Maddix grumbled. “Or lack of one. And I think that’s enough of that. I’ll see you around.”

Isaac laughed into the side of Jonas’ neck. “One way to get rid of him. I’ve been waiting to get you to myself tonight.”

Jonas knew there was still some time before they’d truly be able to do that. This party still had hours to go. But, he still slipped his hand into Isaac’s and held on to him for the moment.

This week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was to Start your post with the word β€œwhich” and try to fit the word β€œwitch” in somewhere if you can. Bonus points if you use a word that ends in β€œwich.” As an added rule this week, you will lose all the points you’ve ever earned if you type β€œwhich witch is which” anywhere in your post. Have fun! And that last rule made me really want to do just that. But, I resisted. πŸ™‚ Instead you get a little more of Jonas & Isaac(which will come after the end of their story) and some set-up potential for Maddix’s story(if I ever get to it).

Writing Wednesday: Pulling Ahead

This has been a pretty good week for me. At this point, all I have left on the week’s to-do list, writing-wise, are my main projects(that may change if I get Stained blood chapters back from beta or Flames of Renewal from CP). Plotting, editing, side projects, even Jonas & Isaac writing goals have been met. And that was even with only doing some plotting on Monday and working on 2 side projects. I seem to not know the concept of taking a day off. Ha! As a friend on Twitter said, my mellow days are similar to her most productive. πŸ™‚

Sunday we went to my mother-in-law’s and carved pumpkins. I used a stencil for the first time on them(and it looked awfully close to how I described Jared’s tattoo in Healing the Heart).

Then, we went to Erie and the girl and I took a trip to the Books a Million(I love their bargain shelves. God a hardback for cheaper than a paperback) in the mall while the boy and my husband did their own shopping. When they came to get us, we stopped at the jewelry store. And I got my ring back.

My hand doesn’t feel naked anymore.

And now it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday again. This is a blog hop, hosting by the wonderful Emily Wrayburn, where we share a snippet of a current work in progress that somehow pertains to the date. I’ve been sharing from my Jonas & Isaac story, which I’m currently writing in a notebook(I shouldn’t even be to this story in the series yet, but these characters just won’t leave me alone). Today I have 8 paragraphs(1+0+2+5) from shortly after last week’s.

Isaac set a hand on Jonas’ knee before he’d thought better of it. And he was sure a bolt of lightning had struck him. He could barely breathe as he stared at Jonas. He seemed to be having the same issue. His chest stuttering on a breath. When he breathed out again, Isaac snatched his hand away.

“Sorry,” he muttered.

Jonas didn’t say anything, and before Isaac could get up, Konner had come in and was sliding between them on the bench. Derek stared at them for a moment then turned away. But, not before Isaac saw their cheeks turn pink.

“What are you two beautiful men doing?” Konner asked. “I just couldn’t stay away from the pretty any longer.” He carded his fingers through Isaac’s hair, flashing him a grin.

Jonas let out a huff and pushed himself up from the bench, getting onto his crutches. It was almost a smooth move. He’d obviously had a lot of practice.

“I should get going,” he said, his voice coming out a little gruff. Strained, even. “Mom’ll be expecting my call.”

Isaac watched him swing his way through the door, chewing on his bottom lip. Was Jonas mad? About the way Konner had been flirting? No, that didn’t make any sense. He was probably just tired, if he’d come here right after his PT session and stayed so late.

“Don’t worry. He’ll be back,” Konner said. “I think he’s finding his place here.”

Is Konner right? And just what is he up to? s Jonas mad, or something else? I’ll have more next week. πŸ™‚

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – “Season”

“Cinnamon. Ginger. Cumin. That’s a good one.”

“What are you talking about?” Isaac asked, looking over at Jonas.

“You were talking about the perfect seasons. I was coming up for some good seasonings for you.”

Isaac laughed and tossed a pillow from the couch at his boyfriend. Is that what they were now? “You are such a goof sometimes.” Though it had been a long time since they’d fallen into this. He could only hope it was back for good. “And you know that wasn’t what I was talking about. Or have you been thinking about eating me? Should I be worried?”

Jonas laughed and sent him what Isaac had always dubbed his naughty smile. “I think about tasting you all the time.”

Isaac went to throw another pillow at him, but there weren’t anymore on his side of the couch. And Jonas twisted so he could press Isaac back against the arm of the couch. “Your mom,” Isaac said. “She’s in the kitchen. Your sister’s upstairs. Your other siblings will be here.”

“We have time for this,” Jonas said, pressing a hard kiss to his lips. When he pulled back, he was still grinning. “Yes, cinnamon would be a good seasoning for you.”

Well. I didn’t really know where that one was gonna go when I started it. Got a little warmer in here than I expected. *fans self* Today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was “season”, and it got a little spicy on me.
