Writing Wednesday: Happy Love Day

This week has gotten off to a good start. I decided to take on my goals with a new routine. Monday I broke my daily goals into smaller sections. Instead of thinking about the 1725 words I wanted to write for the day, I focused on getting 325 at a time. It helped a lot. Tuesday I worked in 5 minute bursts. This also seems to work for me. I’ll use it until it no longer works for me.

Last night we went to a pancake dinner at our church. They even had a berry sauce that I used instead of regular syrup. It was yummy! No point to this other than YUM! πŸ˜€

And since it’s Wednesday, it’s time for WiPpet Wednesday again!!!! That means it’s time for more Jonas and Isaac. I have a long one today. Was just going to go with 5 paragraphs(1+4), but since it is Valentine’s Day(we don’t really do anything to celebrate, but still it’s the day of loooove), so I figured I’d get to a bit more lovey part. So, I have 19 paragraphs(2+1+4+2+0+1+8=18+1 bonus word). Still in the same scene as last week, it starts just a couple paragraphs after the last one ended. The first line is Jonas.

He dragged in a long breath. “I never thought you assumed I would ever consider hurting you. That I would be anything like your father.”

A chill washed away the heat. “Of course, I didn’t. I know you wouldn’t.”

“Except you just said you did.”

Horror slapped Isaac right in the face. Is that really what he’d done? He knew Jonas would never hurt him. And yet the fear hadn’t been able to leave him. And it had made him push Jonas away. Even two years away from his father, the man had still been controlling him.

If today’s fear was any indication, he still was.

“I’m sorry,” he choked out. “I was so scared, of you being hurt, of you turning into someone else. Of losing you. I didn’t know how to handle it.”

“So you walked away from me. Which means you lost me anyway. How did that make any sense, Isaac?”

His lips twitched. “Who said I was the logical one? That was always you, Jo. You were the one who kept me grounded. If it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I would have made it through those first few months when everything changed for me. Roman and Cristine were always great, but you were my anchor.”

And now Jonas’ whole life was changing. Who was that anchor for him? Isaac might not be able to do much, but he figured he could at least do that much. “I thought I was more than that. Isaac could hear tears in Jonas’ voice he was sure the other man would never shed. “I thought I was someone you could love. That you did love.”

“You were,” Isaac said, reaching out to cup Jonas’ face. That was one thing he couldn’t let Jonas keep not believing. “You are. You always have been. I’ve tried to convince myself I was over you, that I didn’t care anymore. It was never the truth. I didn’t want Tereza or Toby to tell me where you were or what you were doing because I was afraid to know. It was never that I didn’t care. I was afraid of what I would hear. That you were hurt. That you had died. I couldn’t bear it, Jonas.”

Jonas brushed tears from Isaac’s cheeks with his thumbs. Isaac just wanted to nuzzle into the touch, like he always used to. But, if Jonas pulled away after just a kiss, Isaac couldn’t take this comfort from him. Not if Jonas didn’t want to give it.

He pulled slowly away and saw he’d been wrong. Tears were sliding down Jonas’ face. He wasn’t making a sound while he cried, but those were definitely tears.

“If Santiago were here, he’d tell me what to do. How to go forward. I just don’t know.”

Isaac couldn’t take the pain he could hear in Jonas’ voice. He slid a hand behind his neck and with his lips, dried those tears. Then, he brought his lips to Jonas’. “I’m not walking away this time,” he murmured. “So, you can go forward with me.”

Jonas let out a little sob then pressed his mouth hard to Isaac’s. Heat washed through Isaac but he didn’t deepen the kiss. He didn’t want to push things too far.

The knock on the doorframe had them jerking away from each other. Jonas’ mother just smiled at them, though. “Dinner’s just about ready. And Toby’s here if you want to speak to him.”

Isaac looked at Jonas, who squeezed his hand. “You need to. I’ll stay with you if you want.”

“Please.”

Writing Wednesday: Picking Up

I got a bit of a slow start to this month. Just could not seem to focus the first two days. Monday was better. Cranked out 900 words first thing in the morning and added another 550 throughout the day. Tuesday was another distractible day, at least in the morning. I did get the rest of my words(goal was 1425 for the day) later on in the afternoon. This morning was a little slow, too. Didn’t help that I decided to start looking at covers for Flames of Renewal.

Not much else going on here, other than still getting the house ready to list. That should be happening soon. But, for now, I’m jumping right into this week’s WiPPet! This picks right up from last week’s, but we’ve switched into Isaac’s POV(Jonas’ last line was: “Then why did you walk away from me?”). I have 11 paragraphs today(7[day]+2+0+1+8[year]=18=1+8=9+2[month]).

Isaac couldn’t swallow the lump in his throat or breathe around the rock suddenly lodged in his chest. “You’re the one who left,” he finally said. “You were leaving me behind. What was I supposed to do?”

Jonas just stared at him. Isaac didn’t think he was going to say anything at first. Then, he choked out, “I wasn’t leaving you. I joined the Army, I didn’t run away. Plenty of other recruits had girlfriends or boyfriends back home. Some of them even made it work through basic and years of active duty. We could have made it, too, Isaac, but you didn’t give us a chance.”

Isaac glanced away from him. Everything felt too tight all of a sudden. He’d managed to confess all of it to Tereza in the first year of Jonas’ Army career. But, could he tell Jonas now? He wasn’t so sure. But, he couldn’t keep quiet, either.

“I was afraid,” he said, not able to bring his voice above a whisper. He felt like acid coated his eyes and throat, burning both of them. “I was so damn afraid, Jonas, and I didn’t know how to handle it.”

“Of what?” Jonas asked, throwing his hands up. “If you would have just told me, we could have worked through whatever it was. Instead you just walked away from me.”

“How?” Isaac demanded. “How could we do that? You’d already committed to four years in the Army, and I couldn’t handle that. Couldn’t live with how that might change you.”

“What are you talking about? Why are you so sure it would have changed me? I’m the same I was then, or I was before that damn accident.”

“How was I supposed to know that at the time? All I knew were the stories my mother told me about how my father was when they started dating before he joined up. And the completely different man that I knew.”

“And your only conclusion was that the Army turned him that way? That it would turn anyone that way? Not that maybe he always had that mean streak in him and something else brought it out? Damn, Isaac. And here I always thought you were the smart one.”

Heat washed through him. You’re so stupid. Why was I burdened with such a stupid son?”

He tried to force his father’s voice out of his head and asked, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

What does Jonas mean? And are they finally getting somewhere? Shortly before this they had a conversation about Jonas not being the school-type, unlike Isaac.

Writing Wednesday: Better Week

This has started off to be a far better week than the last.

On Sunday, we did some shopping, letting the kids spend some of their gift cards they got for Christmas. First was Barnes & Noble. The girl got 2 of her Warriors books she likes. I got 3 books for myself. Then, we went to Toys R Us. Then, Gamestop so the boy could look at some games for the Wii(we’ve had it for years, but he’s recently gotten into playing it). He found 4, and they only came to a little over $20. Then, off to get groceries. I also found a coloring planner and got that for me.

Words were flowing Monday morning, even after an odd night of sleep. Fell asleep on the couch a little after 7:30 Sunday night, woke around 10, fell back asleep, woke up after 12 and decided to actually go to bed. So, I got about 3 rounds of 2 hours of sleep. The kids had Monday off so we’d said we were going to go sledding, since it was supposed to be in the 20s. Yeah, it wasn’t that warm(more like 10F), but we went anyway, though not for very long. Then to Pizza Hut for lunch. And I still made all my goals for the day.

Monday night, I once again fell asleep on the couch. This is becoming a habit I really should break. My neck, back, and hips do not appreciate it much(Of course, I may still be catching up from my Thursday night stuck in the garage). But, Tuesday morning I woke up at 2 and figured there was no point going to bed for an hour or two. So, I just got up and decided to start writing.

I did actually make it into my bed last night. So there’s that. And I was up in time to have a little extra time to write this morning. An hour and a half and over 2300 words. That’s impressive, even for me(usually I don’t even do 1k in an hour). Just past the climax, so I might be able to finish the first draft this week. Which will give me a week and a half to work on By the Gun this month.

Now, since it’s Wednesday, time for a WiPPet snippet again! Today, I just have 7 sentences(1+7[for the day]-1[for the month]=7). This is shortly after last week’s, but still in the same scene.

He took his hand away just before Jonas’ mother stepped into the doorway. She looked surprised for a moment then a smile spread over her face. “Isaac. I guess that’s your car out there then.” Her gaze flicked between the two of them, and her smile widened. “This is a sight I haven’t seen in a while. Are you staying for dinner, Isaac?”

This is obviously not the first time his mother has interrupted them. πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜€

Writing Wednesday: Heat Wave

Well, I’m considering above freezing to be a heat wave. I have fairly low standards, especially when it had been 0F this time last week. We’re supposed to have a couple days of 50s this week. That’s almost shorts weather around here.

My week has not started out too well. Over the weekend, I found a spreadsheet for a daily schedule. I figured I could start my day at 5, and I have 5 different hours for writing tasks. That first hour is for writing on my main project, the other four are picked randomly(between plotting, editing, side projects, & Jonas and Isaac). Well, Monday I slept in until well after 5. So, I ended up with less than half an hour to write. I woke up earlier Tuesday, but couldn’t seem to drag myself out of bed until right around 5. Computer didn’t want to start up at first. After I got it to, things were going okay. Then it decided to freeze up and restart on its own. I had some issues with getting it started up and it was the end of that hour by the time it did, but the words wanted out, so I ended up going into the next hour(which was set aside for chores and such). I didn’t hit my goal either of those days. Today I woke up at 4 and managed to get up. And so far computer is cooperating(although it looks like I’m back to using Microsoft Edge since Firefox refuses to open), so I’m hoping to get more words(I did, I did, I did!). More on that progress in a bit.

It’s Wednesday again, which means WiPPet time! *dances* *knee cracks* *sits back down* WiPPet Wednesday is a blog hop hosted by the wonder Emily Wrayburn where we share a snippet of a work in progress that somehow pertains to the date. I’m still sharing from Jonas & Isaac’s story. Today I have 7 paragraphs(1+8-1-1-0) from a little farther in the scene I’ve been sharing from. Things are getting…warm. πŸ˜€

“Jonas,” Isaac breathed, “are you going to kiss me or not?”

With a groan he couldn’t hold back, Jonas leaned forward and pressed his lips to Isaac’s. They opened immediately, but he didn’t plunge forward. Instead he traced Isaac’s lips with his tongue just as his thumb had moments ago. It was Isaac’s tongue that darted forward, catching Jonas’ and tangling them together.

Jonas moaned around it, feeling too much to put anything into words right now.

They finally pulled apart, both breathing hard and staring at each other. Then, Isaac leaned forward, gently caressing Jonas’ lips with his own. It didn’t have the intensity of that first kiss, but it had Jonas’ heart skipping more.

Isaac’s lips moved to his jaw then his throat as his hand touched his hip then slid over his thigh. “God, Is,” he murmured. “Your hands…” He couldn’t even form words as the desire twisted through him.

“Soft, I know,” and Jonas thought he detected bitterness in the words.

“No,” Jonas said, lifting Isaac’s head. “Capable of driving me fucking crazy.”

I wonder how many people have told Isaac hew has story hands, as if it’s an insult. Jonas certainly doesn’t see it that way.

Writing Wednesday: Cold

Brrrrr. It’s been in the single digits(Fahrenheit) here lately. I don’t even want to know what the temperature is with wind chill. We haven’t gotten a lot more snow though.

Last Friday,we met up with my step mother in law to exchange gifts since we didn’t make it out to her house Tuesday.I got another $100 Amazon gift card from her. Woohoo! I ordered a kindle fire. Instead of having 3 different devices i do stuff on,now i can have it mostly on one. That came yesterday(as well as 3 books),so I’ve been playing with that. In fact, I’m writing this on it while waiting for kids’ bus.

And since it’s Wednesday, it’s time for another WiPPet snippet! I started a new notebook for Jonas & Isaac on Monday.but I’ll still be sharing from the first notebook for a while. Today I have the next three paragraphs from what I shared last week.

Jonas leaned a little closer. “I thought you just pushed me right out of your mind after you walked away from me at graduation.”

Isaac scoffed. “Like I could ever do that. Trying was the only way I thought I could survive, though.”

Jonas wasn’t even sure what to say to that. It had almost been easier to think Isaac had stopped caring. That he wouldn’t have cared if something happened to Jonas. It had fueled some of his drive to get through everything.

They both might have been mistaken about a few things over the last years.

Now for how I’m doing so far this month. It’s actually going pretty well. I think that week I took off helped.

Writing Wednesday: Merry After Christmas

I hope everyone who celebrates had a wonderful Christmas. We weren’t quite sure we were going to make it down to my mom’s on Monday. It wasn’t too bad when we left the house. Our road hadn’t been plowed yet, so that was a little interesting. But, the main road into town wasn’t bad. Until we got past town, and you could barely see more than a car length in front of us. It usually takes about half an hour to drive to my mom’s. Monday it took us just about an hour. But, we made it there, the kids got lots of gifts(I got 3 J.D. Robb books, $60 in Amazon gift cards, a bottle of strawberry wine, slippers, and a t-shirt). We still haven’t had our third Christmas yet(we did Christmas eve with my mother-in-law). We were supposed to go to step mother-in-law’s yesterday, but my husband was up in Erie all day plowing. So, we didn’t make it. We’re going to try to see her and at least my sister-in-law sometime this week(brother-in-law lives in Ohio, and we’re not sure how long he’s here for before he has to go home).

My gifts from the kids. Have I mentioned I’m not a jewelry person? But I did wear them all of Christmas day.

I’m having a low-key week. I thought I’d get some writing done. I did almost 500 words yesterday morning, and that was it. Today I didn’t get up until after 6. I did finish a first draft last week, and I just feel…blah, I guess. I may take this week to finish up some reading and have the writing take a back seat. Actually make myself take a break.

And since it’s Wednesday, it’s time for another WiPPet snippet!! Still sharing from Jonas & Isaac’s story. I’ve switched into Jonas’ POV, and he’s still trying to comfort Isaac. I have 12 paragraphs for today(1+2+2+7).

“I’m sorry,” Jonas said. “That he still thinks he has to torment you. I wish I could go after him and–”

“No,” Isaac said sharply, sniffing a little still. “I don’t want him to hurt you, either.”

Jonas bristled at that. He wanted to say he could take care of him. Except he couldn’t. Not anymore. He’d only been able to get Isaac to the couch because the other man had been on his weak side and supported him as well. “What can I do then?”

“Nothing,” Isaac said. “Nothing will stop him.”

“Then why’s you even come here? If I’m so fucking useless, why’d you even come here?”

Isaac jerked back and stared at him with wide eyes, shimmering with tears. “I didn’t say that,” he said, his voice thick. “And I came because…I don’t even know. Maybe because I could use a friend. Not someone to fix this. No one can fix it. Even years in prison didn’t change him. Nothing will. He’ll just keep coming after me until he does actually kill me.”

“No!” Jonas shouted, fear gripping him. “That’s not going to happen. I swear, Isaac. I won’t let him.”

“How are you going to stop him? You can’t be with me twenty-four, seven. And even if you could…”

He didn’t have to finish that. Of course Jonas couldn’t do anything. He could still barely walk on his own. What was he thinking that Isaac might actually need him?

Jonas looked away from Isaac, trying to get control of his racing thoughts. But, they only seemed to accelerate. Isaac said his name softly, and Jonas looked over at him. He couldn’t seem to stop himself. “I didn’t mean it like that,” Isaac said. “Even if you weren’t hurt, I wouldn’t want you near him. I don’t want him to hurt you.”

His voice broke on the last words and the emotion dragged out words Jonas hadn’t planned to say. “I’d lay my life down for you. Still. No matter what’s happened between us. I would die before letting the same happen to you.”

Isaac stared at him with wide eyes. The tears shimmering there turned his eyes a brilliant gold. “And you don’t think that would kill me? The last five years, I’ve been so scared Tereza would tell me you were dead. How much worse do you think I’d feel if it was because of me?”

I don’t think of them expected the conversation to take this one. Or the one that happens next. πŸ˜‰

Writing Wednesday: White Christmas?

I was pretty sure we were going to have a white Christmas this year. The other week, we got dumped on. Over the last couple days, though, it’s warmed up again. Almost all the snow we had has melted. It is supposed to get colder over the weekend and might snow on Monday, so we may still wake up to that white stuff Christmas morning. We’ll see.

Last weekend, we had my niece’s birthday party and Christmas with my dad. I got a gift card for Amazon and have already spent about 2/3 of it. I got the first 3/5 books in the mail yesterday. Another should be coming today. The last was a pre-order and won’t be here until at least January 2. I may wait and see if I get more gift cards before I order more books. We’ll see. πŸ˜€

Sunday we made Christmas cookies. They’re almost gone. I knew we should have waited until this weekend.

Nothing else going on this week except the girl’s Christmas concert at school tomorrow night. Then, we’re having Christmas with mother-in-law Sunday, our Christmas then down to my mom’s Monday, and with step mother-in-law and husband’s siblings Tuesday.

But, right now it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday. Last week, we left Isaac thinking his dad wouldn’t care if he died. This week, I’ve got 6 paragraphs(12Γ·6), nearly just after last week’s(I skipped 2 paragraphs of just how awful Isaac’s father is).

He was trembling so hard that he barely made the turn into the Pederas’ driveway. Why had he come here? Why hadn’t he gone straight home? He could tell Roman what had happened. He’d know what to do. If that actually counted as his dad breaking the conditions or not.

But, instead he was here. If Toby was visiting his mom, he could ask him. Toby would know, too. He was the reason Isaac was safe now, but he knew that wasn’t why he’d come here. He stepped out of the car, barely managing to shove his keys in his pocket. He stumbled up the sidewalk to the porch, banging his hand on the front door.

His chest was heaving as if he’d run all the way here from the college, but even as the door started swinging open, his heart rate and breathing started to settle. As if his body knew exactly who was opening the door.

Jonas’ face brightened when he saw Isaac. “I didn’t think I’d see you already. How’d your last final go? Notice something different?”

Isaac barely took in the fact Jonas was standing on two legs. He was leaning hard against the door frame but he must have just gotten the prosthetic. But, he couldn’t think about that. And Jonas’ smile fled as if he realized something was wrong. “What happened?”

Isaac stepped into him, and Jonas’ arms came instantly around him. “I saw him,” Isaac gasped out. “He was there. He’s not going to leave me alone.”

And now for my final RoW80 update for this round. I’ll probably do a final one at the end of the month, with how the month, round, and year have gone according to my plan(or more likely completely off it).
