RoW80 Round 3 Wrap-Up

I just wrote up my mid-week check-in yesterday, but the round actually ends today. So, today I’ll be posting my progress for the whole round. And next Sunday, I’ll have my monthly wrap-up and goals for the next month. I’ll probably have two check-ins between that, too. Even though RoW80 will be on break, I have trouble shifting away from my regular routine.

  • Defending the Heart(BC Security #3) – I got this one done.
  • Still Burning(Hunter Family #4) – Nope.
  • Toby & Denise(Gilbert, CO #6) – I got through the brainstorming & half the back stories.

  • Protecting the Heart – finish 1st draft – I got this finished about halfway through August. Just over 68k. 20,053 of those were written during round 3.
  • Closing Time – finish 1st draft – Not there yet. but, this week I’ve realized it’s not actually going to be a novella. These two have more story to tell than I figured. So, it’s at least going to be a short novel. I’ve written almost 35k on it this round, and I’m not quite done for the day.
  • Shed Some Light – finish 1st draft – I just finished this last Friday. It came in a little shorter than predicted, but I tend to add during revisions. I wrote 35468 words during round 3
  • Break on Me – get to 51000 words – I’m at 39880 right now. May work on it later today, but still won’t reach this point. I wrote 16208 words this round.
  • In the Moonlight – get to 47000 words – Only got to 35,043 so far. I wrote 14420 words this round.
  • Brann’s Story(comes right after Closing Time) – 1st draft – didn’t even start this. Will once I finish Closing Time(It’s actually been plotted out for a while. Then I realized Closing Time came first)
  • Defending the Heart – 5000 words – Nope. Only got to 1593 words. This is currently lowest on my priority list. it’ll move up as I finish other things and add more below it.
  • Still Burning – 5000 words – haven’t even started this since it’s not plotted yet. Probably won’t do that until Brann’s story is nearly finished.

  • Stained by Ashes – apply beta edits once I get them all back – Done & Published!
  • Healing the Heart – Final CP edits – got these done & currently polishing it to send to beta readers. So if anyone is interested, let me know.
  • Guarding the Heart – 1st revisions – didn’t really do any of this.

  • Listen: 10 audiobooks – 19/10. This one certainly hasn’t been a problem.
  • Read: 77 books – 62/77 books. Fell a bit behind on this one.
  • Read: 3 craft/research books – I’ve read almost 3.5 craft books.

Not too bad overall, even if there were a couple things I didn’t get to. Now to figure out what my goals for the last quarter of the year will be. I’ll have to get back to you on those.

Writing Wednesday: Back to School

The kids went back to school yesterday. Loving the quiet in the house during the day.

Still working on settling into a routine that works for me. Right now, I’m working on writing goals first thing in the morning, those will shift slightly starting tomorrow since I’ll be moving back to a focus on drafting, though I’ll still be doing some editing and plotting. I’ve been working my way down my to-do list and if I finish everything for the day early, I start on the next day’s goals. So far this week, I’ve been doing good at staying ahead.

Our little firefighter

Our little firefighter

It’s Wednesday, so time for another WiPPet snippet! I believe last week I said I was sharing the last snippet from Shed Some Light. Well, I guess I was lying. Since it’s the last thing I was working on(besides polishing Stained by Ashes), I’ll have some more of it for you this week. I have 12 paragraphs today(8+3+1=12). Carlos is just realizing Tereza is in some trouble. And Toby shows up.

“She said she wanted to clear her name, from the ethics issue and any connection to Damon or Brent’s deaths.”

“Bullshit,” Carlos spat the word. “She doesn’t give a damn about this. She knew I wanted to go after Maxton. She was trying to do this before I did.”

I know,” Toby said softly. “I also know Kogan put it out that he wanted to get his hands on her. I warned her.”

“He’s got her,” Carlos said. “I went there, and he taunted me with it. I couldn’t believe she’d let herself get caught by him, though. I told myself she wouldn’t go anywhere near him. How could I be so stupid?”

Toby reached out to put a hand on Carlos’ shoulder but seemed to think better of it at the last moment. Probably a good idea. Carlos wasn’t sure just what it would take to make him snap.

“Go home, Carlos,” Toby said, already pulling his phone out. “I’ll get her.”

“No,” Carlos said, pushing away from the door. “He already has her. Who knows what he’s already done to her.” He’d said his men had orders not to hurt her. That wouldn’t apply to Maxton himself, though. ‘I have to get to her.”

“No,” Toby said sharply. “You have to leave this to us. Otherwise I’ll be pulling you both out of there.”

“I can’t let anything happen to her.”

“I’m already calling it in. Just leave it to us, Carlos.”

“No,” he said, brushing past Toby. “I’ve let her down too many times already. I can’t do it again.”

Toby swore behind him, but Carlos was already jogging down the steps. He didn’t care. All that mattered was getting to Tereza. Getting her safe. He’d worry about the consequences later.

Uh oh. Not looking too good, is it?

On to my progress on the last of my goals for August. I’ll have separate goals for the rest of this week at the end of this post.

  • Write 3000 words – 3275 words/3000 words. All on Shed Some Light – He heaved out a breath, but could hardly drag in any more air. And fuck, it hurt.
  • Stained by Ashes – Polish – I’ve made it a good way through the list of words to search for. Shouldn’t have a problem finishing it this week.
  • Defending the Heart – finish outlining – just finished this yesterday. Can’t wait to start writing
  • Side projects – add 1200 words – 1637/1200 words.
    • Dance with the Devil – 1071 words – “It’s not gonna be a smooth ride, but I’ll get you back as fast as I can. Just hold on to me, Damon,” he said, his voice cracking. “Don’t let go. Please don’t let go of me.”
    • Snow White Twist – 566 words – She could have sworn she’d seen her stepmother’s face in the water. Tarian must be rubbing off on her. Now, she was seeing danger in every shadow. It’s not the way she’d like Tarian to rub on her.
  • Read: Writing Vivid Characters – finish – finished this yesterday
  • Listen: Rough Justice(Sarah Castille) – finished listening to this. Another one that left me with mixed feelings. Not sure if I’ll continue the series. Started listening to A Rogue Not Taken(Sarah MacLean), which I’m really enjoying.
  • Read: Radio Silence(Alyssa Cole), Summer Nights(Susan Mallery), Summit of Seduction(Elena Aitken) – finished Radio Silence(really enjoyed) & Summer Nights(enjoyed). About 25% through Summit of Seduction.

Now, as it’s the end of the month, I’ll be evaluating my progress for that, too.

  • Defending the Heart – Finish Outline – As I said above, this is done

  • Protecting the Heart – 5000 words or finish 1st draft – 5828 words and finished 1st draft
  • Closing Time – 5000 words – 3727 words/5000 words

  • Dance with the Devil – get to 15000 words – got to over 17000 words

Sunday Summary: RoW80 Round 3 Goals

I had a pretty good last week of June. Wrote over 16,000 words. Wednesday was a low day. Only worked on two different stories, didn’t even hit 3k for the day. Other than that, it was a pretty steady week.

Had a pretty good first day of July. Wrote over 4600 words, though I didn’t quite meet my goal for one story. Still made progress.

Yesterday, we went out early and actually made it to Ihop before the crowd(It just opened the end of May, and I think I’ve mentioned our trials of trying to get in). No wait, and I got strawberry and banana pancakes. MMMMM Yum.

Then we went to a hog bash with some people who work with my husband. Then, we headed to his aunt’s for a picnic and to watch fireworks. The kids had gone earlier with his mom. So, the girl got to swim. As usual, the problem was getting her out of the pool.

Today we’re going (we’re back now)to Kinzua dam with some friends. I actually wrote most of this yesterday so it was done. I actually don’t think we have any plans for the fourth. Stopped at Perkins for breakfast. Got a Belgian waffle with strawberries. Yum again(also, do you notice a trend?) We went and saw the old train bridge(a tornado in 2003 knocked down half of it and they made what remained into a ‘skywalk’. Then, we took the trail to the bottom. Keep in mind, it’s about 300 ft from the base to the skywalk. Yeah, there were some steep hills. My knees weren’t too happy about that. Then, we headed to the beach to eat lunch and the kids went in the water for a bit. Then, we went over to the actual dam. They have most of it closed off(unlike the one closer to where I grew up that you can walk across), but you could see where the water comes through to the other side. I took a lot of pictures, so I’ll share some of them later.

  • Write 19,350 words between 5 projects – 19867 words
    • Protecting the Heart – 7917 words – He didn’t even know how long they crouched there. He just knew that every cry ripped out another piece of him.
    • Closing Time – 3156 words – And he begged a god he wasn’t sure he believed in anymore that Nolan wouldn’t come up here to order their drinks.
    • Shed Some Light – 4416 words -“I didn’t kill him. I didn’t leave the restaurant until late, and I went straight home.””I believe you, Carlos. So, tell me exactly what you do know so we can find the one who did.”
    • Break on Me – 2212 words -“Not once I figured it out. Give me some credit here.””Why should I start now?” *oh, brothers 🙂
    • In the Moonlight – 2166 words -“Oh, knock it off,” Yasmin said, taking a step into my room. “I thought we were bonding over our dislike of your older sister. Then, you go back to that formal crap. I don’t care if you hate me too, but at least call me Yasmin.”
  • Finish Outlining Cam & Gio’s story – did this and titled it Closing Time. Not sure if this will stick but works for now.
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 5900 words – only got to 5878 words. –Yeah, it was never a good thing to be alone with Hawk. That was when bad things, that made me feel really good, happened between us.
  • Snow White Twist – get to 3400 words – got to 3009 words. –It was nothing, she told herself. Just a bit of fancy thought. There was no shadow inside him, no shadow that followed or swept through her.
  • Read: Description – 100%; decide on July’s research/craft book – finished ‘Description’, chose Romancing the Beat(Gwen Hayes) for July.
  • Read: A Most Scandalous Proposal, The Admiral’s Bride, Identity:Unknown, Good Girls Don’t(Victoria Dahl), The Marquess Who Loved Me(Sara Ramsey), Hard to Hold On To(Laura Kaye), A Fashionable Indulgence(K.J. Charles), & Star Nomad(Lindsay Buroker) Read through A Fashionable Indulgence. Mentioned my irritation with the brothers in Good Girls Don’t on Wednesday. Got better and main character stood up to them at least. Had some issue with the “hero” in The Marquess Who Loved Me. Sex for revenge is a trope that tends to bother me. Still, looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Really enjoyed Hard to Hold On To & A Fashionable Indulgence. I’m about 30% through Star Nomad(as of Saturday afternoon), and I just love Lindsay’s writing. Today I’ve read more than half of Against the Sky(Kat Martin). Enjoying it and hoping to finish later today.

Now for my goals for the next round:

  • Defending the Heart(BC Security #3)
  • Still Burning(Hunter Family #4)
  • Toby & Denise(Gilbert, CO #6)

  • Protecting the Heart – finish 1st draft
  • Closing Time – finish 1st draft
  • Shed Some Light – finish 1st draft
  • Break on Me – get to 51000 words
  • In the Moonlight – get to 47000 words
  • Brann’s Story(comes right after Closing Time) – 1st draft

  • Healing the Heart – Final CP edits
  • Guarding the Heart – 1st revisions

  • Listen: 10 audiobooks
  • Read: 77 books
  • Read: 3 craft/research books

And for this first week:

  • Snow White Twist – get to 3500 words
  • RoW80 Sponsor Post – Draft, Revise, & submit
  • Read: Romancing the Beat – 30%
  • Read: Finish Against the Sky, Serendipity(Carly Phillips), Close Enough to Touch(Victoria Dahl), PS I Still Love You(Jenny Han), Cress(Marissa Meyer), The Girl From Everywhere(Heidi Heilig), and Hearts of Evil(Lauralynn Elliot)

RoW80 Round 2 Wrap-Up

I posted my usual mid-week check-in yesterday, but I saved my end of round wrap-up for today. I’ll account for the rest of this week’s progress on Sunday as usual, even though we’re technically on break. Come on, if you’ve followed me for long, you know I don’t do much when it comes to taking breaks. Just doesn’t work well for me.

So, I’ll dive right into how I did on this round’s goals:

  • Break on Me(Kurztown #4) – Outline – this is done.
  • Carlos & Tereza(Gilbert #5) – Outline – also done.
  • Cam & Gio(Flames #5.25) – Brainstorm – and this too. Also have most of outlining done. Should finish it before the end of the month.

I ended up with 15489 words in plotting for the round.

  • Paint Me a Picture – 1st draft – just finished this last week. Ended up with over 36,000 words for this one.
  • Ready When You Are – 1st draft – just finished this yesterday. Came in shorter than I’d expected at over 52,000 words. I’m sure I’ll add more during revisions, though.
  • By the Gun – get to 86k(unless I shelve it) – ended up shelving this after writing another 135 words on it. Not sure I’ll take it back out.
  • Protecting the Heart – get to 76k – No. I’m at 39290 right now. I’ll be continuing with this next round.
  • Break on Me – get to 40k – Only got to 20393 words. Continuing with this next round.
  • Carlos & Tereza – get to 20k(if Carlos remains so insistent, though, this will probably be higher) – YES! 30096 words right now.

In all, I drafted: 156,370 words between 7 different projects.

  • Healing the Heart – finish CP edits & Polish for beta readers(if anyone’s interested in reading the follow-up to Duty to Protect, let me know) – still waiting to hear back about something on this from my CP, so it’s on hold for now.
  • Stained by Ashes – Beta edits once I have it back from 2nd beta – these are still coming in from 2nd beta.
  • Stained Blood – CP edits once I have it back – haven’t gotten this back yet.

  • Listen: 3 audiobooks(was going to be 4 but I finished Map of Fates Friday) – HA! I’ve listen to 20 books. Have definitely met my yearly goal.
  • Read: 77 books – Only 68 books unless I missed putting some down on my list. May still meet this by the end of the month, though.
  • Read: 3 craft/research books – just about through the third of these.

  • Knit: 3 projects – 1 project
  • Crochet: 4 projects – 2 projects
  • Knit: 3 projects – 1 project

Mostly blue and green for the round, with only a couple red(and one of those is kind of out of my hands for the moment). So, a pretty good round all in all. I’ll have goals for next round up early next month.

Writing Wednesday: Split Focus

This week has been going fairly well. Making progress on projects, though the last few days I’ve felt unfocused. Or at least my focus wasn’t what it should be on. Yesterday all I wanted to do was get back into reading Beyond the Red(Ava Jae), which I absolutely loved. But, I made myself get everything else done before I picked it back up. Not sure what my problem was today, other than being woken up at 3 a.m. by a whining puppy(this doesn’t happen too often anymore at least). And it’s really cold in the house. Last week I was thinking about getting shorts out. Today I dug out some slippers. I was going to sit under my blanket and watch the second half of season 1 of Outlander(I got it on DVD in December, but never seem to find the time to watch). But all of a sudden, the DVD player doesn’t want to read any DVDs.

It’s Wednesday again, which means it’s WiPPet Time! Woohoo!! I’m working on Ready When You Are(Hunter Family Book 3). This is Kelan and Oliver’s(might remember him from Some Fools Never Learn – he was Emilia’s brother) story, and Kelan’s brother, Nolan(from Flames of Restoration) has just showed up. This is still fairly close to the beginning of the story(pg 15 in my Word document). I have 14 paragraphs(2+7-4+2+1+6) of mostly dialogue

Nolan smiled, but it didn’t quite meet his eyes. Him and Maura couldn’t be having problems already, could they? They’d only been married for three weeks.

“Finn had a birthday party to go to,” Nolan said. “Maura took the girls shopping to spend some of their Christmas money. I have about an hour until I need to pick Finn back up, so I thought I’d see you, maybe swing by Mom and Dad’s if I have time.”

“Oh, okay,” he said, leading Nolan toward the kitchen. It wasn’t too unusual for his brother to stop by, especially if he was nearby. Still, it felt like there was more going on. And he had just seen Nolan the night before. Which made it even odder for him to just come over. “So, what’s up?”

Nolan let out a long breath. “Actually that’s what I was going to ask you.”

That had Kelan stopping where he was. “What does that mean? I’ve been back to school this week. But, you know that since the kids are, too.”

Nolan nodded. “There’s more to you than your work, though. You had a date last week.”

Damn having a close-knit family. He didn’t think that too often, as he loved the way his family was. Most of the time. “He had to cancel on me. Something with work, I guess.” He shrugged a shoulder as if it didn’t even matter. But his hand shook as he reached for the refrigerator door. “You want something to drink?”

“No, Kel. I want you to sit down and talk to me. You seemed upset when you were talking to Emilia last night.”

Kelan grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge for himself then moved over to the table where his brother had already taken a seat. “It’s fine. She explained this is how he gets when he’s working on a case. It wasn’t about me.”

“Kelan,” Nolan said, and something in his voice had Kelan’s head coming up, forcing him to make eye contact. “He may not have meant it like that, but you don’t have to disregard the way it made you feel.”

Kelan let out a strained laugh. “Anyone ever tell you that you should go back and finish your psychology degree.”

Nolan’s laugh was a little looser. “Mark mentions it all the time. Not always as a compliment.”

“When’s he getting married? Coming up soon, isn’t it?”

“Yes, next month. And stop changing the subject,” he said, but with a smile still on his face.

My progress so far this week:

  • Plot/write/edit for 20 hours – 9.5 hours. I might try to get a little more written today. We’ll see.
    • In the Moonlight – 2341 words in plotting. Ready to start writing this
    • Protecting the Heart – 2537 words
    • Ready When You Are – 1420 words
  • Dance with the Devil – get to 750 words – Have played with this(and the other two when I’ve gotten everything else done for the day. – at 619 words right now.
  • Goin’ Down – get to 625 words – 606 words
  • Snow White Twist(no official title for this one yet) – get to 300 words – 314 words
  • Read: Conflict & Suspense – Finish – up to 88% on this
  • Read: Everyday Average Jones(Suzanne Brockman), Beyond the Red(Ava Jae), & Beware the Wild(Natalie C. Parker) – finished Everyday Average Jones(liked it, though  had a couple issues with it) and Beyond the Red(LOVED!! yes, it deserved all caps), and almost halfway through Beware the Wild. Obviously it’s been a reading week.
  • Crochet: Twisty Cabled Beanie – more progress on this. Hoping to finish it this week.
  • A-Z Challenge – Revise U,V,W,X,Y,Z – got these all revised and scheduled on Sunday.

Sunday Summary: Warm Again

Last weekend it was snowing. This weekend it’s about 70 degrees(F). And in between that time, my sinuses have been seriously acting up. Last night we had the fire department’s awards banquet. It was good, especially since they had it catered this year, so my husband didn’t have to spend all day cooking and still not be able to enjoy the banquet because he had to worry about making sure there was food out. This time he was able to actually sit down and eat. And MIL kept the kids at her house last night, so we were able to sleep in. until 7! That is a major accomplishment in this house.

I’m getting back to focusing this week. Working on one plotting/drafting project for 3 hours a day then on editing for 1 hour. And I just had to put my Surface back in the house because it got overheated. Continuing on my little tablet. I’ll be working on a different project each day. I’m thinking this will work better. But we’ll see. And I had to come back inside because the tablet didn’t want to copy and paste my list correctly. Plus I don’t have any of my word counts on it.

  • Plot, write, edit 25 hours – wrote about 13/25 hours. A lot less than I’d planned.
    • Protecting the Heart – 2176 words
    • Ready When You Are – 1937 words
    • Paint Me a Picture  – 1154 words
    • Carlos & Tereza – 4349 words
    • Break on Me – finished back stories(about 500 words) and almost finished plot summary.
    • In the Moonlight – finished one back story(about 500 words)  just over a page written on the next one.
  • Come Back Down – Read Through – didn’t do. Think I’m going to set aside for a little bit(at least through this month and maybe next) and start drafting the next one in the series(titled: Dance with the Devil – since it’s Devil’s story).
  • Goin’ Down(short story) – write 1/2 – nope
  • Read: Conflict & Suspense – get to 55% – got to this point.
  • Read: It Had to be You(Jill Shalvis), The Chocolate Rose(Laura Florand), Passing on Faith(A.M. Leibowitz), King(T.M. Frazier), Any Given Christmas(Candis Terry), & Rocks and Gravel(Catie Rhodes) – Finished Passing on Faith(LOVED it), set aside King(when there’s too much of the f-word even for me, there’s a problem. I had other issues with it as well), finished Any Given Christmas(enjoyed, though I had some issues with it), and finished Rocks and Gravel(enjoyed). Yesterday I read about half of Just For This Moment(Kait Nolan) which I’m really enjoying. Hoping to finish it today.
  • Knit: Entwined – nope. Setting this aside until I get the needles I need(I did have them but can’t seem to locate)
  • A-Z Challenge – Draft & Revise O,P,Q,R,S,T – these are all scheduled to go up next week.

More red than I’d like, but I guess the blue evens it out.

  • Plot, draft, edit 20 hours
  • Dance with the Devil – 250 words
  • Goin’ Down – 500 words(it’s currently at 400)
  • Read: Conflict & Suspense – get to 80%

  • Crochet: Twisty Cabled Beanie
  • A-Z Challenge – Draft & Revise U,V,W,X,Y,Z

Writing Wednesday: Rough Start

This week didn’t start out too great. Woke up Monday morning with a splitting headache over my left eye. Headaches aren’t really a rare thing for me, but this one made me not even want to look at the computer. I still wanted to get my words done, though. And thankfully the first things up on my list for the day were plotting. Which I do in my notebooks. Also, I kept myself to only half an hour(or even less) on each project. I had everything pretty much done by lunch time then. Although my word count was low. Then, I spent most of the afternoon just reading. I was able to finish one book and start another. So, I’ve actually been ahead on my reading this week.

Tuesday was a lot better. No headache and about 4.5x as many words. And once again, I was done with my words by lunch time, so I got a lot of reading in. Today’s word count seems to be falling between the two. And that’s okay. I’m still making progress on all my projects.

And since it’s Wednesday, time for another snippet. Sharing a little more from Carlos & Tereza’s story. I have 4 paragraphs today(1+3). Carlos is trying to figure out the kind of trouble his brother’s in, and his brother isn’t exactly grateful for the offer of help(even though he asked for it).

He turned and started away, but his brother’s voice stopped him. “You can try to cover it up all you want, Car, with your fancy shirts and nice language. But, you aren’t any better than me. We came from the same place, and we’ll both be going to the same place when we die.”

Carlos kept his shoulders straight as he started walking again. “Never tried to deny any of that,” he murmured.

Toby followed behind him, and Carlos had to rub his hands on his pants. “Sorry for the things he said about you,” he told the detective. “I know you’re not still-”

“Forget it,” Toby said, making a quick slashing motion with is hand. “His words aren’t yours, and it doesn’t matter. He’s in trouble, Carlos. He doesn’t seem to realize how much.”

Yeah, he’s definitely in some trouble. But, is Carlos going to be able to get him out of it?

Now for the progress I’ve made so far this week:

  • Plot, write, edit 25 hours – 7/25 hours. A little less than I’d like. But, still making forward progress.
    • Break on Me – 535 words, finishing up back stories
    • In the Moonlight – 496 words of back story
    • Paint Me a Picture – 1154 words
    • Ready When You Are – 1655 words
    • Protecting the Heart -932 words
    • Carlos & Tereza – 2103 words
    • Healing the Heart – 13 words(waiting on email from CP to get back to this)
  • Come Back Down – Read Through
  • Goin’ Down(short story) – write 1/2 hour(may not get to this as we have Fire Department awards banquet Saturday night & will be recovering Sunday).
  • Read: Conflict & Suspense – get to 55% – 40% through this
  • Read: It Had to be You(Jill Shalvis), The Chocolate Rose(Laura Florand), Passing on Faith(A.M. Leibowitz), King(T.M. Frazier), Any Given Christmas(Candis Terry), & Rocks and Gravel(Catie Rhodes) – Finished It Had to be You(really enjoyed) and The Chocolate Rose(loved this…seriously who knew making desserts would be open to so many sexual innuendos. lol). 25% through Passing on Faith and loving it.
  • Knit: Entwined – still haven’t touched this. Don’t have the right size needles(well, I do but I need a set of 4 double-point needles, and I can only find 3 of them).
  • A-Z Challenge – Draft & Revise O,P,Q,R,S,T – O,P, & Q are drafted. R is at least half drafted(and already over 900 words. This might be a long one). I want to get all of these drafted & at least O revised before the weekend, since I won’t have much time to work on them then). And since I forgot to list them Sunday, here’s the second half of last week’s post:
  • And this week’s so far:

Sunday Summary: RoW80 Round 2 Goals

Yes, I know Round 2 technically doesn’t start until tomorrow. But, I’m used to writing up my check-ins and new goals on Sundays. And I like to stick to routine wherever I can. First, we’ll look at how I did over the break(break? What’s that? I did say I like to stick to routine, remember?)

  • Work 20 hours on writing projects – 13 hours, 35 minutes. I’m actually planning on taking this down to 15 hours
    • Protecting the Heart – 189 words
    • Ready When You Are – 397 words
    • Paint Me a Picture – 871 words
    • Carlos & Tereza – Brainstorming & about 150 words of back story. I also wrote a little piece for SOCS about these two. Wasn’t going to start this until I finished Paint Me a Picture, but Carlos was insistent.
    • Love Who You Love – 11040(this also finished the first draft)
    • Break on Me – brainstormed general characters & deeper into one of the main characters
    • By the Gun – 135 words. I’m seriously considering shelving this one.
  • Edit 5 hours – 1 hour, 50 minutes – finished CP edits for what was in the document. Still have to apply more general comments toward it.
  • Come Back Down – work 1 hour – 45 minutes yesterday & finished 1st draft. Started a new short story this morning. Next weekend, I think I’ll start revising Come Back Down(mostly filling in details right now) on Saturday and work on the short story on Sunday
  • Row80 Sponsor Post – Brainstorm & draft – This is about half-drafted.
  • Read: Description & Setting – finished this. Wasn’t too impressed, mostly with what I felt was a condescending tone.

Alexander), Legal Heat(Sarah Castille), Love on the Ledge(Zoraida Cordova), & Kiss Kill Vanish(Jessica Martinez): I’m 10% through Love on the Ledge and should be able to finish it today.
  • Crochet: Half and Half Slouch Hat – finished this and the Morning Light Cowl on the loom.
  • A-Z Challenge – Draft & Revise posts as I have time – I have through (J) drafted with (K) started. And through (H) is revised & scheduled. Hoping to stay at least a week ahead on this.

Sunday Summary: A Good Week

This has been a pretty good week. A lot of writing, a good amount of reading, and even finished another knitting project.

Also, I got a new planner and pens yesterday. That always makes for a good week. 🙂

Can’t think of a whole lot else to report on for this week, so we’ll get right into the goals.

  • Work 20 hours on drafting – 19 hours, 20 minutes/20 hours. Came really close to this one, but Friday I felt drained and only got in 3 hours. I did write 18,600 words during the week, though.
    • Protecting the Heart – 4026
    • Paint Me a Picture – 4746
    • Love Who You Love – 4155
    • Ready When You Are – 3030
    • By the Gun – 2643
  • Work 5 hours on editing – close to 6 hours. Finished polishing up Stained by Ashes. Now just to get it out to betas.
  • Come Back Down – work 1 hour over weekend – got about 1.25 hours in. Added 1104 words. Should have this finished soon, by the end of the month, I hope.
  • Read: Description & setting – 70% – got this far into it. There was one part that really bothered me. When talking about what readers of different genres expect with descriptions. Apparently romance readers are all about clothing/jewelry/fashion-type stuff description. Um, yeah, not so much. I skim anything more than a sentence or 2 that’s description of clothing, particularly f it includes name brands. Maybe I’m in the minority, but it was written like it’s a given all romance readers want that. And the examples he gave were all from older romances. Maybe I’m wrong, but when I’m reading romances(and writing them), I’m a lot more interested in the emotions than anything else.
  • Read: The Scorpion Rules(Erin Bow), Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda(Becky Albertalli), Defiance(C.J. Redwine), Chance of Rain(Amber Lin), Slow Heat(Jill Shalvis), Winter’s Burn(Elena Aitken), 99 Days(Katie Cotugno), & Festive in Death(J.D. Robb) – Finished Defiance(enjoyed), set aside Chance of Rain, just couldn’t get into it, read Slow Heat(enjoyed but not as much as most of her other books), and Winter’s Burn(liked). I started 99 Days last night, but didn’t get too far into it. Got up to 48% while riding around in the truck.  I’m hoping to at least finish that today but don’t know if I’ll get to Festive in Death.
  • Knit: Mug Hug – finished this & got yarn for my next projectwp-1458472651866.jpg
  • A-Z Challenge – draft posts as I have time – finished (C) post & started (D) post. Hoping to work through more of them this week.

As for next week’s goals:

  • Work 20 hours on writing projects
  • Edit 5 hours
  • Come Back Down – 1 hour
  • Read: Description & Setting
  • Read: Finish 99 Days(Katie Cotugno), Festive in Death(J.D. Robb), The Vixen and the Vet(Katy Regnery), Frisco’s Kid(Suzanne Brockman), Once Upon a Setup(Kait Nolan), My Last(Melanie Shawn), Protect and Serve(various), & Lies We Live(Brenda St John Brown)
  • Crochet: Half and Half Slouch Hat
  • A-Z Challenge – draft posts as I have time

A to Z: D is for Drafting

Drafting involves drawing from a body of water rather than a hydrant or tank. This is a pretty important consideration in rural areas where hydrants aren’t readily available. Our fire department has a tanker engine, which helps, but even that isn’t always enough. Sometimes, even in town, more is needed.

Back in December of 2010, our town had a very large fire in what had previously been a furniture plant, but at the time held various stores on the first floor. They fought the fire for probably close to twelve hours. Even with nearby hydrants and the tanker, one of the biggest problems was not having enough water to fight the massive fire. They ended up having to draw from a local creek before it was all over.
