Writing Wednesday: Love Day

So, yesterday was Valentine’s Day. I’ve never been a huge fan of the day, but it is what it is. We don’t really do anything for it. A couple times my husband had gotten me flowers. But, they wilt after a little while. Chocolate is nice, of course,  but definitely not something I need. And I don’t wear jewelry(how do I spell this wrong every time), so why would he waste the money on that(seriously, my wedding ring is the only I wear). I’ll take the cash he gave me Saturday to go the library book sale since I only had a couple $ in my wallet and a nice dinner out. We spent some time together yesterday while the kids were at school, but that was about the extent of it. And I’m happy with that.

So, not much else here except today is WiPPet Wednesday. Woohoo! Today I have 6 paragraphs(1+5 for the day). This happens shortly after what I shared last week. Piers woke up in Xavier’s bed…alone. Then, remembers Xavier putting him there and heading out to the couch and he goes out to find Xavier in the middle of a nightmare. It’s not the first time he’s witnessed one of them.

The words wrenched right through Piers. This was what Xavier was dreaming about? Him? He brushed hair back from Xavier’s forehead. “I’m right here,” he said. “I’m not going anywhere. No matter what my head says I should do. I just can’t seem to leave you behind.”
Xavier’s cries dropped down to murmurs, his thrashing calming as well. Piers ran his thumb over Xavier’s temple, his lips following the movement. Then, Xavier’s eyes fluttered open. For a moment, they remained glazed, as if he was still coming out of sleep. Then, they cleared, and a shutter fell.
“What are you doing out here?” Xavier asked. “You should still be in bed. Your side-”
“Is fine,” Piers lied. “And what did you expect when I thought someone might be killing you out here?”
It was too dark to see any color flush Xavier’s face, but Piers’ hand was still next to his temple, and he could feel the heat there. “I wasn’t that loud.” Piers just looked at him until Xavier finally broke eye contact. “I’m sorry. I haven’t had to worry about waking anyone up with them for a while.”
He sensed them both freeze at that. Piers knew what that meant. No one had been in his bed to witness the nightmares. Maybe not since him. He shouldn’t even ask, but he had to know. “Define ‘a while.’”

So how long has it been? Piers is a bit surprised by his answer. Though, he clarifies that’s only for how long since someone’s stayed all night. And things are about to heat up. 🙂

And now for my progress so far this week:

  • Write: Shoot for 10000 words between projects – 4664/10000 so far. I still have my secondary project to work on today, so this will be a little higher.
    • Defending the Heart – 3380 words
    • Midas’ Daughter – 504 words
    • Stay a Little Longer – 780 words
  • Edit: Stained Blood – write new scenes – I’ve added 664 new words this week. On 2/14 new scenes.
  • Plot: Playing with Fire – finish outlining scenes – 54/69 scenes outlined. Hoping to have the last ones done either today or tomorrow.
  • Side Projects – 1000 words – 856/1000 words. I only have 1 more side project to work on, so should be able to get to that today. I did adjust the individual goal and spread the total goal out among all 5 stories.
  • Snow White Twist – fill in [xx] and start read through – nothing on this yet this week. Will be working on it this weekend.
  • Listen: Glass Sword(Victoria Aveyard) & Unintended Consequences(Marti Green) – Only have a little over an hour left in Glass Sword. It’s breaking my heart right now.
  • Read: Finish Duke of Thorns(Sara Ramsey), Dead Before Dying(Kerry Schafer), The Unsung Hero(Suzanne Brockman), Truths We Tell(Brenda St John Brown), Of the Bauble(Debbie McGowan), Relic of Sorrows(Lindsay Buroker), Best Worst Mistake(Lia Riley), Written in the Stars(Aisha Saeed), The Rule Maker(Jennifer Blackwood), & Against the Sun(Kat Martin) – I finished Duke of Thorns(liked), Dead Before Dying(really enjoyed), and The Unsung Hero(enjoyed) on Sunday. Read Truths We Tell on Monday(really liked) and finished Of the Bauble yesterday(loved). I started Relic of Sorrows last night and got about halfway through it. So I’m ahead on this goal at least.
  • Knit: Clean Slate Hat – Made some more progress on this.
  • A to Z Challenge: Draft – Posts A-Z – got the first ~350 words written on my A post. Hoping to get more of it done today.

Writing Wednesday

Another decent start to the week. At least in some aspects. Others not as much. Writing is going well, and I even managed to finish one of my side projects. Of course, it’s the one I’ve been working on the longest. And about 2 months later than I’d originally planned to have it finished. But, still, it’s done. Well, kind of. Hawk & Devil’s story will continue, written from Hawk’s POV this time.

Before I get to my progress, it’s Wednesday, which means it’s WiPPet Time!! Woohoo!! As I mentioned last week, Defending the Heart is currently my main project, so I’ll keep sharing from that until the first draft is done. Probably at least the rest of this month, maybe even the beginning of March. For today, I have (easy math, just the day) sentences. Xavier left the office and was attacked in the parking lot. Piers saw what was happening and rushed to the rescue and got hurt for his trouble, but refuses to go to the hospital. So, Xavier is going to take him in and take care of him.

Piers sighed as if realizing arguing would be a lost cause. “I’m not your responsibility, X.”
“But, I’m yours?” Xavier asked even as he put his shoulder under Piers’ arm to help him up. “Is that why you came charging across the parking lot like a raging bull?”
Piers gaze clashed with his for just a moment. “I wasn’t going to just let them hurt you. I don’t want to see you hurt.”
“Same goes, buddy,” Xavier said as they headed for the stairs.

Should Piers have gone to the hospital? What is going to happen between these two?

Now on to my progress so far this week:

  • Write: Shoot for 10000 words between all projects – 6000/10000 words. I haven’t started my secondary project for the day yet, so I’ll have at least a little more.
    • Defending the Heart – 4276 words
    • Midas’ Daughter – 252 words
    • Stay a Little Longer – 670 words
    • Not Meant to Be – 559 words
    • Playing with Fire – 243 words – I ended up adding another of my Just Jot It pieces to the end, possibly as an epilogue.
  • Edit: Stained Blood – finish Story Toolkit & outline new scenes. Start writing new scenes – I finished the Story Toolkit & outlined 9/14 new scenes
  • Plot: Playing with Fire – finish Story Toolkit & outline scenes – I finished the Toolkit and outlined 7/69 scenes. I may not have this done in time to start writing tomorrow as I’d planned, but I could always work on the first scene even if the last ones aren’t outlined.
  • Side Projects: Add 1500 words – 711 words. These were all to Dance with the Devil. Which I finally finished writing! Woohoo! I’d hoped to have it finished by the end of December. So I’m only about 2 months late. Whoops.
  • Listen: The Sapphire Brooch(Katherine Lowry Logan), Walking on Her Grave(Melinda Leigh), & She Can Kill(Melinda Leigh) – I finished The Sapphire Brooch(loved), Walking on her Grave(really enjoyed), & She Can Kill(really enjoyed, couldn’t stop listening). Now I’m re-listening to Red Queen(Victoria Aveyard) before I finally get around to getting book 2(probably the end of this month).
  • Read: Finish Born Wild(Julie Ann Walker), Gena/Finn(Hannah Moskowitz & Kat Helgeson), Make It Right(Megan Erickson), Duke of Thorns(Sara Ramsey), Illegal Motion(Erin Nicholas), Shadows and Silk(Liliana Hart), Dead Before Dying(Kerry Schafer), & The Unsung Hero(Suzanne Brockman) – I finished Born Wild(really enjoyed) and Gena/Finn(LOVED and made me cry) on Sunday. Finished Make it Right on Monday(loved). I got a little more than halfway through Duke of Thorns yesterday. I started Illegal Motion this morning. If I finish it today, I’ll pick Duke of Thorns back up(which I’m enjoying, but it’s not a Oh, God, I’ve gotta keep reading one).
  • Knit: Clean Slate hat – I’ve made more progress on this as well. I have 15 more rounds before I start making decreases.
  • A to Z Challenge: Draft – Posts A-Z – nothing on these yet. Though I did find out the last Sunday of April(since there are 5 Sundays instead of only 4) will be a posting day, so now I at least know the schedule and can finish up my theme reveal post. I think I’ll go back in after each letter post goes up and link to them in one post.

A good bit of green and even some blue. Hopefully I can turn the red to more green by Sunday and maybe even some of that to blue.

Writing Wednesday: New Month

I was going to do my January wrap-up along with today’s post, but I figured my Wednesday posts are usually long enough as it is. So, I did it and my goals for February yesterday. So you can go check those out if you’d like.

I’ve had a pretty decent start to the week. Monday was a good wording day. Yesterday not quite as much, but not too bad. And things are heating up in Defending the Heart(in nice contrast to the weather outside my window).

Speaking of, it’s Wednesday which means WiPPet time!! Woohoo!! Yeah, I get a little excited about that. As I figured last Wednesday, I did finish the first draft of Crash and Burn on Friday. Which means Defending the Heart has moved up into the main project slot. So, that’s what I’ll be sharing from, probably at least the rest of this month. Today I have 13 sentences(2+1+2+1+7). Piers was worried about Xavier when he didn’t show up for work so went up to his apartment where Xavier started to attack him but didn’t seem to realize it was him. It didn’t take Piers long to realize what was going on.

“Flashback?” Piers asked softly when Xavier took his arm away.
“I’m fine,” Xavier said. Which didn’t exactly answer Piers’ question. He wasn’t really surprised, though.
“Does this happen often?”
“That I have hot guys breaking into my apartment? I wish.”
Piers knew Xavier was just trying to get a rise out of him, but he didn’t bite. “You know just what I meant, X.”
“And I told you I’m fine. You surprised me, that’s all.” But, he’d turned his back so Piers could no longer see his eyes.

Is Xavier really fine? What was he flashing back to? Will he let Piers in?

Now, as for my progress so far this week:

  • Write: Shoot for 10000 between all projects – 3939/10000. Okay not as much as I’d like at this point.
  • Edit: Stained Blood – finish Story Toolkit & outline new scenes – I got through the subplot worksheet on this one
  • Plot: Playing with Fire – finish Story Toolkit, the last 2 Just Jot It January prompts, and outline if I can – I got through the subplot worksheet on this too. And I wrote 1 more Just Jot It piece for this one, though it probably takes place after the end of the story
  • Side Projects: Add 1500 words(since I’m moving Midas’ Daughter up under the other writing for now) – 329/1500 words so far.
  • Listen: Changeless(Gail Carriger), Be Mine Forever(Marina Adair), The Sapphire Brooch(Katherine Lowry Logan) – finished Changeless(loved, though the end broke my heart. just glad there’s more or that end would have pissed me off), I still have about 3 hours left on Be Mine Forever but enjoying it.
  • Read: Finish Idol(Kristen Callihan), Mixed Signals(Alyssa Cole), Act Like It(Lucy Parker), & Engaging the Bachelor(Cathryn Fox). Added: No Place to Run(Maya Banks), Along Came a Spider(Kate Serine), Born Wild(Julie Ann Walker), Gena/Finn(Hannah Moskowitz & Kat Helgeson) & Make It Right(Megan Erickson) – I finished Idol(enjoyed), Mixed Signals(really enjoyed), set aside Act Like It because it didn’t pull me in & the hero was being set up as a completely unlikeable asshat & I didn’t see why I’d want to root for the heroine to get together with him. Then, I read Engaging the Bachelor which I liked. I started No Place to Run last night and got to page 69.
  • Loom: Meadow Moss Headband – I started this again and ended up ripping it out yet again. I just can’t seem to get it right, so I finally decided to give up on this one. So for this week, I added:
  • Knit: Clean Slate hat – haven’t started this quite yet
  • A to Z Challenge: Draft – Posts A-Z – I got the theme reveal post mostly written up. I was going to list out the titles for each post but realized there’s only 25 days not counting the Sundays this April. So, I’m not sure where that extra day will go. I checked the website, but it’s not up there yet, so I’ll wait to finish that one up. I’m still counting this one as in progress.

Writing Wednesday: Slow Start

I’ve had a bit of a slow start to this round. Monday the kids were still home, and it took me longer than I’d hoped to get my words in for the day. I decided to change to working 2 hours on my main project and 1 hour on a secondary project each day.  Which means I may not get the 3000 words I’d planned every day, but I’m hoping it might balance out throughout the week. I was hoping to catch up on stuff that got pushed aside on Monday yesterday, but then we started moving things around in the girl’s room so we could put our old headboard in there(since we got a new bed last month). Turns out her bed(one of those wooden ones with the drawers built in) is falling apart. We’ve had it eight years, and it was used then. So, we’re going to give her the other pieces of the old bed, too, we just have to get it in there now.

Still hoping to get caught up on where I’d wanted to be. I mostly am except for my knitting and reading goals.

Now, it’s WiPPet Wednesday!! The first one of the new year. I have a little more from Defending the Heart for you today. 6 paragraphs(1+4+2+0+1+7=15=1+5=6)

“You two boys sure you don’t want anything else?”
They’d ordered some pastries to go with their coffee when they’d first set things up. But, since then, it had just been refills of the coffee. Xavier started to shake his head, but Piers said, “How about a couple of those cinnamon scones I saw the last time I was up that way. They looked as sweet as you.”
Xavier very nearly groaned as the waitress smiled at Piers and noted down the order. He wasn’t sure if it was just the flirting Piers was doing with the waitress, or because the other man obviously still remembered his weakness for cinnamon.
“We’ll probably be here a little while yet,” Piers said quietly once the waitress had left, a light flush to her cheeks. “We’ll need the fuel.”
He might be right, but Xavier still didn’t want to think about how he’d smiled at the woman. Piers used to smile at him like that. And it was all his own fault he didn’t anymore. He needed to remember that.
Even after that kiss, he couldn’t expect to get that smile again. That had just been a buildup of…what? Lust, frustration…something else? He didn’t know. But, he was sure it wouldn’t happen again. It shouldn’t happen again. It only led them along the same cycle they’d been repeating the last fifteen years. You’d think eventually they’d learn.

Well, they certainly have to learn something, it just might not be the thing Xavier assumes. 🙂

  • Write: 14000 words(2k on main project a day, 1k on others a week) – As I said above, I’m not quite keeping to this plan. But, I’ve got 5912/14000 words in so far.
  • Stained Blood – start re-plotting once back from CP – got this back Monday and we’ve been emailing back and forth on some ideas. I’m about ready to start re-plotting
  • Loving the Devil – start Story Toolkit – I got this started and 1st 2 sections filled in
  • Playing with Fire – finish back stories, plot summary, start Story Toolkit – finished the last of the back stories and the plot summary. Going to type all those up into scrivener today then start the Story Toolkit
  • Side Projects – write 1500 words – nothing on these yet
  • Listen: Miss Frost Solves a Cold Case(Kristen Painter) & She Can Scream(Melinda Leigh) – Finished Miss Frost Solves a Cold Case. It was a fun listen. I started She Can Scream this morning.
  • Read: The Hawk(Monica McCarty), Law Man(Kristen Ashley), Trade Me(Courtney Milan), Tied to Trouble(Megan Erickson), What Chris Wants(Lori Foster), Just You(Rebecca Phillips), & Island of Glass(Nora Roberts) – Like I said above, this is one of the goals that’s suffered this week. I’m only about halfway through The Hawk and haven’t even started the others. May start dedicating more of my afternoons to reading.
  • Knit: Craigiecatt Hat – I just finally got this cast on yesterday. haven’t made more progress than that.
  • A to Z challenge: Plot – nothing more on these this week. I may get to them at some point.

More red than I’d really like to see, but a good bit of green, too. So that isn’t too bad. and I did a lot of jotting here, so I guess this can count for my Just Jot It post for today. 😉

Writing Wednesday: Off Week

This is definitely going to be a lower word count week for me. I’ve been fighting off a cold/sinus crud since this past weekend. So, I’ve been taking it a little easier this week. Starting to feel better, so hopefully next week things will pick back up again. And I’ve decided to switch my method up again. I was working on a different project each day from when I get up until around 9 a.m. But, sometimes the project I’ve picked for a certain day…the words just won’t come. Or my mind’s more on another project. So, I’m starting out each day working on the project that’s furthest along(right now that’s In the Moonlight). As long as the words are rolling, I’ll keep working on it. If I stall out, though, I’ll move on to the next one. So far this morning, I’ve worked on In the Moonlight, Crash and Burn, & Defending the Heart. The bottom three are all pretty close percentage-wise, so their order may flop around some.

Since today is Wednesday, that means it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday!! You can check out the others’ here. Today, as I’m still working on Defending the Heart, you get another snippet from that. I have 10 paragraphs(1+2+7) between Piers and Xavier, exposing some old wounds.

Piers could only stare after him for a minute. There was a lot he wanted Xavier to say to him, not the least of which was about the note he still held in his hand. “Who would do this? Who hates you so much they would do this?”
Xavier let out a bitter laugh. Piers hated hearing that sound come from the other man’s lips. Nothing about Xavier should ever be bitter. “You want me to make a list? Hell, I could probably put you on it.”
Piers could only stare at him as that wound bled. “You actually think I would do this?” he finally asked. “You think I would try to frighten you like this?”
Xavier turned back, and Piers saw the pained look in his eyes, like his words had been a self-inflicted wound as well. “I didn’t say you would be high on the list. But, if we’re making one of people who hate me, you’d at least make the bottom of it.”
And the knife twisted. “I can’t believe you would think that. I have never once hated you.”
“I don’t blame you. I screwed up, so I can’t really blame you for it.”
Would they just continue to rip each other apart? Was that what was meant for them? Piers had laid down that ultimatum three years ago, an all or nothing situation, how could he take it back now when Xavier still wasn’t willing to give all? But, it didn’t mean he hated the other man. He didn’t think he was capable of that.
“I’d destroy that list before my name ever touched it. And anyone who did make it on there.”
Xavier stared at him, his lips slightly parted, even as Piers wished he could reel the words back. They exposed too much of him, too much of the rawness that had never fully healed. He couldn’t take the look in the other man’s eyes and turned away. He started for the stairs leading out of the apartment and back down to the office space below.
“Piers,” Xavier said, his voice sounding as raw as Piers’ chest felt.

What’s going to happen next? Will they be able to move past this? Or will they keep hurting each other?

As I said above, it’s been an off week for me. But, I’ll still list out my progress here. Maybe it’s better than I thought(sometimes that happens).

  • Write: 12500 words – 3476/12500 words. Way behind where I’d like to be by today. May end up not meeting this one.
  • Edit: Let It Begin(Kurztown 2.5) – Pre-revision items(filling in all the [xx] I left through it, story map, timeline, etc…) – I got the [xx]s all filled in. There weren’t too many, mostly names for side characters. May get more done on it today.
  • Plot: Loving the Devil – Back Stories – I started the first back story, not quite 3/4 of a page written, and have added a couple pictures of how I imagine the character on pinterest.
  • Side Projects: Write 2000 words – 1071/2000 words. All of these came yesterday. Working on each of these for 5 minutes seems to be working out pretty well.
  • Listen: Soulless(Gail Carriger) & The Last MacKlenna(Katherine Lowry Logan) – I finished listening to Soulless yesterday and absolutely loved it. Wish I would have bought the second one when they were both on sale. Will be starting The Last MacKlenna today.
  • Read: Finish Soulblade(Lindsay Buroker), Against the Tide(Kat Martin), Honor’s Flight(Lindsay Buroker), Dare to Touch(Carly Phillips), The Vanishing Throne(Elizabeth May), Romancing the Holidays(various), A More Complicated Fairytale(Emily Witt), & The Distance Between Us(Kasie West) – Finished Soulblade(loved it), Against the Tide(enjoyed), & Honor’s Flight(loved) and read a short story that falls between Honor’s Flight and the next book(which I bought as soon as I finished HF). I got about halfway through Dare to Touch last night. I may not have been writing a lot this week, but been doing good with the reading.
  • Crochet: Dashes Beanie – Making progress on this. wp-1481115835872.jpg
  • A-Z Challenge Posts – nothing new here. For now, this will be a ‘once I have everything else finished’ project.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Yes”

Yes.”

“You’re saying someone put this note right on your windshield? And you do not know who it was?”

“I’ve already told you yes, Piers. What more do you want me to say about it?” Xavier spun away from him, shoving his fingers into his hair.

He couldn’t take the look in the other man’s eyes and turned away. he started for the stairs leading out of the apartment and back down to the office space below.

“Piers,” Xavier said, his voice sounding as raw as Piers’ chest felt.

He paused at the door and looked back over his shoulder. There was so much there between them, he wasn’t at all sure how they could ever bridge it. Xavier didn’t say anything else, though, and Piers turned back for the stairs. he’d spent the last several months, ever since he’d seen Xavier again for the first time in years, if he still love him. Could he still love him. But, the answer was pretty clear.

Yes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was for this week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt of “yes”, using it as either a word or as part of a word. I didn’t work on this story yesterday, so still had some more words to get down for it for this week. This doesn’t follow right after what I did have written, so I’ll have to fill that in later. But, this scene just kind of came to me with the prompt.
Stream of Consciousness Saturday: “Novel”
This week’s Stream of Consciousness prompt from the wonderful Linda G Hill is “novel”. This shouldn’t be too hard for a writer to talk about, right? I thought about working it into some fiction, but maybe I’ll do something different. It is National Novel Writing Month, after all. And, yes, I’m participating. I always have since I started back in 2010. I had a 3 year old and 2 month old at the time, didn’t even hear about it until a few days into the month. And I’d hardly been writing anything at that time. I think I felt I couldn’t be a Mom and a writer at the same time. Which, looking back, is a little ridiculous. I actually think I’m a better mom now that I’ve taken writing back(seriously, it’s not pretty when I don’t write for a while). Anyway, that first year I totally failed. I just jumped on a vague idea I had. Since then I’ve always plotted out my ideas.
This year I’m actually working on 5 different projects. Yeah, it’s cheating I suppose, but this seems to be how I work best. When I try to focus on only one at a time, all the other ideas suddenly think its their turn. So instead I’m writing 500 words a day on each. By the end of the month, this should get me at least 55,000 words, since I don’t work on the weekends unless I have to do some catching up. Anyway, this year’s projects are:
Defending the Heart
This is book 3 in my BC Security series. I actually first wrote book 1 for NaNo ’11. Then, I re-plotted and completely rewrote it. I always knew book 3 would be Piers’ story. Then, in book 1 Xavier popped up. I hadn’t been expecting him, or the fact that he and Piers had history and very possibly a future.
Crash and Burn
This is a novella in my Flames series. That series revolves around a fire department. The female main character is a paramedic who works with the department, and the male main character is a previous character’s older brother. This takes place at the same time as Closing Time(which I recently finished), and I wonder if it will ignore my decree of it being a novella as much as that one did.
Not Meant to Be
This is a series I actually started about probably 14 years ago now. The first book was written then at least. I completely rewrote it in 2012 and published it in 2014. I’m getting ready to release book 2 next month. This is book 6, but Toby has popped up in almost every single novel so far(except book 2 I think). It’s about time he got his happy ending 🙂
Stay a Little Longer
This is book 5 in my Kurztown series. I started this as a standalone set in a small town. It was just going to be a simple contemporary romance. A challenge for me because those tend to turn more into romantic suspense for me. I never thought it would be a series. And then Brian says he wants to tell the story of how he and Ashley got together(book 1 was told in 2 timelines, and they got together between those times), then sweet, soft-spoken, scarred Doren said he had a story to tell too, and look at that, now I have a series. Terrall was actually the antagonist in that one(there is bad history between him and Doren). I didn’t think he’d ever get a story, that I wouldn’t want to try to redeem someone who had taken a life by driving drunk. But…Redeem may not even be the right word for what will happen, but he is trying to makes amends. And something he said in Doren’s story will come back to bite him 😉
In the Moonlight
I feel like I’ve been working on this one forever(according to my spreadsheet, I started it at the beginning of May). It’s the only one of these that isn’t part of a series. This actually started as a flash fiction piece several years ago. It’s not even close to what that was, except there’s still a ghost involved. I’m really loving these girls, though.
So, that’s what I’m working on right now.
