Home of a mother, wife, writer

Today is the kids’ last day of school. And it’s only a half day. So, my routine may change slightly. My kids do tend to be pretty independent, so there might not be too much of a change. Just having them home does tend to mess with my routine, though. I like having a quiet house. But, I’m pretty sure we’ll all survive the summer.

She’s been braiding her own hair.

Our washer is still broken. Hubby thought it was a plastic coupler on the end of the motor. But, nope, that was actually fine. Thankfully that part only cost $10. Which is why we were hoping that was it. Unfortunately we have to buy a whole new transmission apparently. That’s like $150. Great. But, it should be here Friday, then hopefully husband can fix it.

I’ve been making a lot of good progress this week. I’m already almost through my writing goals. I finished this week’s goals for the first side project and am halfway through the other. If I finish that, a couple pages for Jonas & Isaac,(managed that since typing this up)and 3 scenes of By the Gun, I’ll start over with Flames of Knowledge again and get ahead on next week’s goals.

It’s WiPPet Wednesday, so that means it’s time for another snippet of what I’m working on. Right now, that’s By the Gun. It’s been a while since I’ve shared anything from this, if I have. I have just been working on it when I get my goals for the month done, but I decided to do things a little differently this month. I have the first twelve sentences(6+6) of Part 2. The first part was written mostly from Luke’s POV. Part 2 is written mostly from his oldest son’s(Alejandro) POV. Part 3 will be mostly from Alejandro’s brother’s POV. You’ll see why I couldn’t use Luke’s POV for the rest of the story.

Alejandro stood at the foot of the grave, his hands clutching his hat in front of him. He knew he was mangling the crown of the hat, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care right now. He hadn’t slept a wink since the day he and Diego had ridden out of that town, his father’s dead body tied over the saddle of their now extra horse.
His father was dead. He lay in that coffin down in that hole that some priest was droning on about. The evils of violence had taken a good man from the world and… Alejandro tuned him out. Not that it wasn’t true. He still believed his father to be a good man. And Patrick Steinwehr an evil one. But, his father hadn’t been the man they’d all thought him to be. And he still didn’t know what to make of that.

This is very much not a happy, fluffy story. If you couldn’t tell. Not a romance either, though there are some romantic lines running through it. Which may be part of why it’s been harder for me to write.

  1. I hope you have your washer up and running soon. As always, you are so freaking productive!!! I hope things transition smoothly for you.

  2. Ooh, now that’s interesting. I wonder what makes him different from the man they thought he was.

    • Basically, they grew up thinking he was just a simple rancher with an aversion to guns(especially weird in 1880s) only to find out now, he used to be a gunfighter who put his guns away for reasons they still don’t quite understand.

  3. I love the snippet, and love the progress. Your daughter is looking lovely, grown up, and happy.

May the summer be wonderful for all of you! =D

  4. This was unexpected and different. A bit dark too, but there’s nothing wrong with that, if the content warrants it, which this seems to. I’m walking away with a lot of questions here… a clearly good thing.

    • I think that’s part of why this is taking so long. It’s definitely different than what I usually write. But, it doesn’t seem to want to let me go.

Ooh, if you have shared from this one before, I must have missed it. I like to see something a bit different to what you usually share; I’d be keen to see more of this WIP. I’m intrigued exactly what revelations came out about their father.
