Home of a mother, wife, writer

Not officially changing my goals on here. But I am planning to scale back a bit. I was doing some figuring and between all my series, I have 32 stories that either need to be edited or to be sent to my critique partner. That’s…a lot. And I do have a lot more ideas that I want to get written. I’ve also been feeling a little, I don’t know, self-pressured, I guess, to get it all done. So, I’m backing things off a bit.

Single flower growing

I’d gone from trying to finish a draft in one month, to two months. And now I’m going to scale back even further. Three months to finish a draft. That still seems pretty reasonable for me. And it will give me more time to work on everything else, too. If I finish early, that’s all the better.

Bunnies I saw on a walk

I’m planning to get through each weekly goal before I move on to the next. So, I’ll finish Flames of Knowledge for the week, then start on my editing goal and so on. I’m hoping this will work out for me.

  1. On Friday, I was ready to hang up the whole writing thing. It is so much work for such little reward, basically only the satisfaction of having completed a story. I think all writers go through those phases. I kept chanting, “I stink, my writing stinks, everything I write stinks.” Whether that is true or not, here I am, back in the saddle and planning my writing goals for the week.
Glad that you have cut back on your goals a bit. None of us need any more pressure.
    Have a great week.

    • I’ve tried not writing before, when my daughter was little until just after my son was born. Honestly, it made me a little crazy, even when I tried writing a little by hand. All these stories in my head and not getting them out. So, even if I didn’t publish anything else, I’d probably keep writing. I do plan to keep publishing, though. Even when I too have those thoughts that it all sucks.

If you feel you need to slow down, it’s good you’re doing it! I’m still impressed with how much you manage to do. 3 months for a draft is really good. =)

  3. Your post made me think that as writers, we constantly balance work and writing (sometimes these are separate) with family and our own desire to tell stories. I also cannot set my writing aside — there’s always at least 2-3 projects simmering away. I admire your creative energy as well as how you are looking at new ways to focus on those stories you love. Trust your intuition and persevere. Have a very good week.

    • Thanks, Beth. It can be difficult to balance it all,and I don’t even have another job to throw in the mix. Of course, in less than a month, the kids are going to be home for nearly three months, so there may be even more adjusting to come
