WeWriWa: “Taken Enough”

Welcome back to another visit with the Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop for anyone who likes to write. We’re heading out a little later today for my niece’s 9th birthday party and then Christmas with my dad, so I’m getting this up early in the morning Saturday(not all that unusual for me anyway). I have the last of the scene I’ve been sharing from for you today. I got a bit creative with punctuation to make it all fit.

My father had tried to beat that out of me, and I’d sworn I’d never hide it again. Damon didn’t have that driving him, though. He’d been too afraid of losing the second family he’d made, but he was finally safe to be who he was here; if only my father wasn’t threatening all of that now.

I couldn’t let it happen. I would not let that man take even this from me; he’d taken enough as it was. I looked straight at Icarus. “So what are we going to do?”

A little smile tilted his lips up. It was as if he could see into my head and knew just where my thoughts were headed. I hoped he didn’t because he would certainly try to stop the plan that was currently forming in my head, and unless they came up with something better, I couldn’t let that happen.

What are they going to do? What plan is Hawk forming in his head? Are they going to get out of this or find even more trouble?

  1. Good questions at the end! 🙂 Nice snippet and provides teh right amount of tension to keep readers engaged.

  2. It seems a confrontation is in the offing.

  3. Why do I have the feeling that Hawk’s plan is dangerous? Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

  4. Must be SOME plan all right, but he has a lot to fight for. Love this story, great snippet as usual!

What a strong statement this scene makes about their relationship despite their very different pasts. Don’t do nothing dumb is probably appropriate here.

  6. When you know someone you care for would try to stop you if they could read your mind… Either very, very good, or so very bad.

    • Yeah, and Icarus thinks of both Hawk and Devil(Damon) as sort of younger brothers. And it’s part of his function in the club to keep the others safe.

      • Those “younger sibling” relationships can be a challenge… feelings change, the younger one grows up…. lots of good potential for conflict here.

  7. I admire his determination and protectiveness, but you’ve definitely got me worried that he’s planning something dangerous. Great snippet!

Whatever he’s planning is not going to be good. Maybe not smart, either. Interesting the two brothers’ attitudes. Isn’t that typical of siblings? Each one sees the same circumstances in different ways.
