Writing Wednesday: Bury in Fiction

It can be hard to write a light-hearted intro when there’s bad stuff going down outside the window(not literally my window. It’s dark and peaceful right here). I tend to withdraw when there’s any kind of bad news or worry even, on the news or even in my own life. Like me completely blocking that my stepdad was having knee replacement surgery the other week(he was being stupid and doing more than he should shortly after getting home. So, you know, pretty typical). Last time he had surgery was on his heart about 8 years ago, and I was a nervous wreck the whole time.
So, that’s what I do. I shut out everything else, and I bury myself in fiction. Not necessarily a great way to deal with the world. I often care too much and get overwhelmed by it. Another reason it’s not good to tell your kids they’re too sensitive(which I’ve been guilty of myself and am trying to do better). It doesn’t give very many coping methods for dealing with an insensitive world.
Anyway, good stuff happening here. Went to the bookstore with the girl on Sunday. I got three new books, the girl got 2. And I got her to try a new series, which she seems to have liked(she’d read most of it on the way home). We also got our hair cut. Left it up to the kids how short they wanted to go. Girl decided to go with shoulder-length. I went a little shorter than before. It was starting to feel like I had a mop on top of my head. There’s a little bit of bangs I can twirl while I’m writing, though.

I’ve had a fairly good week of writing so far. Especially when it comes to the Jonas & Isaac project(considering I wasn’t supposed to start writing their story yet and don’t even have it plotted out, just a couple notes jotted down). I have more from that for my WiPPet Wednesday, a blog hop where we share a snippet from a current WiP that somehow pertains to the date. Today I have 7 paragraphs(1+6 for the day). This picks up almost right after last week’s(there’s only one paragraph between them).

    Jonas turned his head the other way, still refusing to look at him. “So, I guess you’re still angry with me,” Isaac said softly. “I never thought you’d be the type to hold a grudge, Jonas.”
His throat felt too thick to even respond. He’d stopped being angry by the time he’d finished boot camp. The heartache had taken longer to disappear. Maybe by the time he’d met Santiago when he was stationed in Texas while doing his combat medic training.
It had still hurt to think about him, though, so he’d done his best not to. Santiago had helped with that, until they realized they were better friends than lovers. He hadn’t been the last relationship Jonas had, though he hadn’t remained friends with the others.
And now when he needed Santiago the most, he wasn’t here.
He saw Isaac’s hand go up to brush hair away from his face. Bracelets clinked together on his wrists at the movement. The gesture and sound was so familiar, Jonas couldn’t help but look up.
He had a hard time focusing on Isaac’s face since his left eye didn’t like to cooperate. And even with the severe hearing loss in his left ear, he heard Isaac’s gasp. Or maybe he saw his mouth round and his brain interpreted it as a gasp. He didn’t know. It didn’t matter because Isaac was already turning away from him.
He was wrong, the heartache wasn’t gone. It was slamming into him, just like the medevac chopper had slammed into the ground a couple months ago. Only this time, he wasn’t sure he’d survive the crash.

Why did Isaac take off out of there like that? Will they ever be able to get back to where they were? Will Jonas survive this(I’m pretty sure we all know this answer;) )
Don’t forget you can visit the other WiPPeteers here.

The girl is ready for school to start in just under 2 weeks. Even found a cat bookbag.

And now for my RoW80 update. Internet has been acting wonky the last couple days, but it finally seems to be better. So hopefully I can get this posted without any problems.

Sunday Summary: In My Bubble

This has been a pretty good week, at least in my little bubble. A lot of writing. A lot of reading. So, pretty much immersing myself in fiction. Seems to be what I’m best at. So, I guess I’ll just get right to it.

Just like the kids, fighting one minute, being all lovey the next.

Writing:

  • Primary: Write 50000 words on 5 main projects – 19173/50000 words
    • Heart of Christmas – 2628 words
      • The door behind her slid open, and she didn’t have to turn to know it was Caelen coming inside. She held her breath for a moment. Maybe he had realized he was being an idiot, and everything could be okay again. But, he didn’t even come anywhere near her.
    • Still Burning – 2501 words
      • No. That was ridiculous. His father hadn’t wanted anything to do with him for the last twenty-seven years. Why would he now? And why would he be staking out Jess? That really didn’t make sense. She didn’t want anything to do with him, either.
    • Whatever It Takes – 2703 words
      • “So, Alexa,” he said, “anyone here today you want to try to hook Jayla up with? Or did you give up on that?”
        “I promised her I wouldn’t try to set her up with any other waiters,” Alexa said.
        Konner met Carisa’s eyes, and his grin widened. “I didn’t say anything about waiters, did I?”
    • High on Loving You – 2535 words
      • Morgan just stared at his phone for several minutes. It had to be because he hadn’t had any coffee yet. Hadn’t even taken a shower. That’s why he thought he read on the screen: Raina’s at the diner. Not sure what exactly happened, but was scared to stay at Kacy’s. She’s okay. Let me know what you want to do.
        What he wanted to do? He wanted to go and pound his fists on Kacy’s door and demand to know what she was doing that was scaring their daughter so much.
    • By the Gun – 2515 words
      • Because a trip to town was usually an all day to-do. “What are we going to do in the meantime?” he asked. “We can’t just let the cows keep escaping. We can’t lose that many.”
  • Secondary: Write 10000 words on 10 side projects -3467/10000 words(only including some snippets from these)
    • Patrick & Sarah – 123 words
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 203 words
    • Roman – 174 words
    • Dougal & Shae – 160 words
      • “I said she’s stupid. If she doesn’t think my baby brother is a catch, then what else would describe her?” *Aw, sibling loyalty. 🙂
    • Jacob & Matthew – 261 words
      • So, he would do what he could to keep himself safe. And Matthew. There was always Matthew. No matter how much he knew it would be better to stay away. He just couldn’t.
    • Mike & Fadil – 266 words
      • Which meant he had to stop thinking about Mike Keech, no matter how good looking he was. They both had too much on their plates for any involvement. He knew all too well what that kind of thing could lead to. And he couldn’t do it again.
    • Preggers – 210 words
      • “Grieve for me, Lyndi. I won’t be able to stop you. But, don’t spend the rest of your life not living just because I’m gone.” She’d hated when he brought it up, before each deployment it seemed, but he’d been adamant that he’d want her to move on if something did happen to him. She wished he’d had the same conversation with his family, though.
    • Hawk – 354 words
    • Sean & Braeden – 203 words
    • Jared’s Stepfather – 204 words
      • The officer shook his head. “I’m sorry to inform you, your stepfather is dead.”
  • Stretch: Write 20 pages in composition notebook on Jonas & Isaac’s story(already had 2 pages written at beginning of month) – 29/20 pages. Raising this to 40 pages.

Editing:

  • Primary: Edit Stained Blood as I get chapters back

    • Carry Me Home(Rosalind James) – Started this Friday afternoon. Finished it Tuesday afternoon. Liked it. Though I could handle not ever reading/hearing another male character telling a female character to act/dress/look feminine. In the context in this book, it wasn’t so bad, but I’ve heard it enough in my own life that I’m rather tired of it.
    • Forgotten Memories(Robin Perini) – Started this Tuesday afternoon. Finished this Friday morning. Enjoyed it.

WeWriWa: Behind Armor

Welcome back for another visit with the Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop for anyone who likes to write. We have a much more laidback weekend here than the last one. I’ll savor that for now since the next couple won’t be as much. But, after Labor Day, things usually calm down social-wise. At least until the holidays. But, I’m sure you’re here for more of Hawk’s story. so, here’s the next bit. This follows right after last week’s.

His gaze shot past me to the truck, but Mr. Bentley hadn’t come out yet. He looked back at me. This was something we’d been trying to work past as well. He was mostly okay with the other Riders seeing us being affectionate, but with anyone else around, he reverted to his old state, of trying to pretend we were only friends.

I wish he never had to do that. But, I knew it could be hard to leave behind armor that had always done well protecting you.

So I held myself back from kissing him, even though I wanted to do it more than anything else at the moment. I couldn’t be the one to make the move. Damon just stared into my eyes, though.

Then, from the truck, Mr. Bentley shouted, “Jeez, boy, just kiss him already and put him out of his misery.”

Will Damon kiss Hawk already? Will it get easier to leave behind that armor? What is going to happen next? I should have at least one of those answers for you next week.

Stream of Consciousness: “Guess”

Guess you must be Jonas, then.”

Isaac watched Jonas’ gaze shift beyond him to Konner. “What gave you the first clue?”

Isaac twisted his head and saw Konner grinning. Of course. Very little kept him from doing that. No matter how rude someone got, Konner just kept grinning away. It had a tendency to disarm people.

“Well, you did basically just announce it,” he said. “And you look a lot like your older brother, so that doesn’t hurt.” He looked back to Isaac. “I get it now.”

“Get what?” Jonas asked, but Konner kept his gaze on Isaac.

“Why you still haven’t been able to get over him. It bothered me back when we were dating, but I get it now. He’s a fine specimen. And all that emotion simmering under the surface. Yeah, I get it.”

Isaac caught a flush of color in Jonas’ dark cheeks, but he turned away. Isaac just shook his head at Konner, who chuckled and moved away. Isaac faced Jonas then. “What are you doing here? I didn’t think you’d want to see me. Tereza said you’re living at that center near the base.” Which had at least meant some distance. Even if it was only about a half hour drive.

“Yeah. Not for much longer, though.” His jaw tightened, and he looked away. There was pain in that gesture, and it hurt Isaac, too. But, he didn’t say anything. What could he say? If the Army was moving him somewhere else, it wasn’t like he could do anything about it.

“You want to sit or something?” Isaac asked. He didn’t think keeping himself up on those crutches could be that comfortable.”

“I’m fine,” Jonas said, though his jaw was still tight. “Toby came to bring me home for the weekend,” he said. “He told me, Isaac.”

“Told you what?” He kept his gaze on the floor. He wanted to look Jonas in the face, but it hurt. Not just seeing the scars there, but the pain that was evident in the rigid line of his jaw and in those dark eyes he’d always loved looking into.

“About your dad. That he’s about to be released. Are you okay?”

Isaac’s head snapped up at that. “That’s why you’re here? The only reason you’d come to see me is because you think I’m falling apart because my asshole father is getting out of jail.”

“I was worried about you,” Jonas said.

“Well, don’t be. I’ve got it handled. There are people who never left me who will stand around me.”

“You broke up with me,” Jonas reminded him. Like he really needed to.

“Because you were already planning to leave. Why don’t you just go back and do your soldier thing.”

“I can’t,” Jonas said then that jaw went tight again. “Never mind. I don’t know why I bothered to come. No matter what your boyfriend said, you obviously moved on a long time ago. You’re right. You don’t need me worrying about you.”

Isaac didn’t say a word as Jonas turned and used his crutches to move out of the room. No matter how much he wanted to call him back, what was the point? They’d only keep hurting each other. Konner came over to stand in front of him again. “Damn, but you’re an idiot, friend.”

Guess so,” Isaac muttered.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, that didn’t go too well. 😉 This week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt was to use ‘guess’ any way we wanted. So, of course, the first line popped into my head. This would come right after last week’s. I didn’t expect it to go so wrong, though. Ah well, I’ll eventually bring them back together.
Fiction Friday: Staring at the Sun – Cover
I finished posting Dance with the Devil a couple weeks ago. Earlier this week I made up a cover for the next story, Staring at the Sun. This is Icarus’ and Cassie’s story, which I originally posted as this year’s A-Z blog challenge. It takes place just a month or so after Dance with the Devil. It’s the shortest of them, so far, and slightly different. Mostly because instead of writing from single 1st person POV, this one is dual 3rd person. And it ties back into some things that happened in the first book, Into the Sun.
I’ll start posting it to Wattpad next week, but for right now, here’s the cover:
You can look for chapter 1 next week.
Writing Wednesday: 10 Years
almost 10 years ago(1 week old)
Okay, so it’s 10 years minus 1 day. Yes, my daughter is going to be double digits tomorrow. And yes, I’m having a hard time believing that. This is my sensitive, and sometimes dramatic, daughter. She often still has her bed so covered in stuffed animals that there’s little room for her to sleep. She’s my “girly-girl”, who likes to paint her nails and wear dresses and skirts. Has a strong distaste for jeans(and I mean strong, she refuses to wear them). She’s my little bookworm, who seems to be more interested in non-fiction(particularly about animals) these days.
And she’s going to be 10. She’ll be starting fourth grade in 3 weeks(well, from yesterday). How did this happen?(yeah, I know how, but still). We had her birthday party this past Sunday. I was a little stressed since we were busy all day Saturday, and by the time I got home at 8:30 that night, I still had to bake zucchini bread(ended up with enough zucchini for 2 loaves) and the cake. So, it was close to 11 before I got to bed. And there was stuff to do in the morning before the party. But, we got it handled. And I mostly handled the party, even if 7 kids(counting mine) being loud in my house had me a little on edge. And that was just her cousins. And we get to do it again in 3 weeks for her brother’s birthday.
And now it’s time for WiPPet Snippet, a blog hop hosted by the amazing Emily Wrayburn where we post from a current Work in Progress that somehow corresponds to the date. Today I have 9 paragraphs, picking up a little ways down from where I left off in Jonas & Isaac’s story last week. Jonas is snapping out at people, and Toby realizes why and pushes him to take a pill so he’s not in so much pain. And we find out a little more about what happened to him.
He twisted off the cap, glad at least his arms hadn’t been damaged in the accident, and he could at least do something for himself. Some hero. The chopper had gone down on their way to pick up a couple wounded soldiers, and he hadn’t been able to even help the men on board. Hadn’t been able to help Santiago, his best friend, his one time lover.
Jonas swallowed a sob with the pill. All his medic training had meant jack shit as he laid trapped in the wreckage. He’d heard Santiago take his last breaths and hadn’t been able to get to him. His foot had been so mangled and deprived of blood flow by the time help go there, there’d been no recourse but to remove it. They thought it was a head injury that caused the vision and hearing loss on his left side.
But, he was still alive. Some days he just wasn’t quite sure if that was a positive or not.
The door opened again, and he lifted his head, thinking it would be his mom, sister, sister-in-law and the kids.
It wasn’t.
Everything inside him froze as five years seemed to just disappear. His stomach knotted up, and he gripped the edge of the table. No. He was only here for two days. Couldn’t he even go that long without seeing him? Any other time he’d been home on leave he could have stood it. Not now, though.
“Isaac,” Carlos said. “You here for that dinner order for the center?”
“Yeah. Is it ready?” His voice had started to trail off on the last word, and Jonas knew his ex-boyfriend was looking at him. There wasn’t much more than blurred images on that side, though.
He ducked his head and turned his face away, hoping Isaac hadn’t already seen the scars there. The last thing he needed was pity from that direction.
How will Isaac react to seeing him again? Will he pity Jonas? Will they even talk? I’ll have the end of this scene for you next week.
In the meantime, you can check out the other WiPPeteers here.
Sunday Summary: 10th Birthday
Four more days until I have a child in the double digits. And we’re having her birthday party today. Yesterday we had to take the dogs to the vet in the morning. Then, the motorcycle club we ride with had their annual ride benefiting a local oncology clinic. So we helped with that, went on the ride, and stayed for the after party. They also do a pub crawl, but we had to come home and start getting ready for the girl’s birthday party. It was a beautiful day, if a little chilly with the wind.
She gives him belly rubs, he gives her kisses.
After we got home, I made two pans of zucchini bread and the cake starting at after 8:30 at night. This morning I need to finish cleaning things up(including putting rest of groceries away-I only worried about the cold stuff when we got home Friday night), decorate the cake, and get the rest of the food ready(which is pretty much putting out bags of chips and the fruit and veggie trays we bought the other night).
The week itself has gone pretty well for me.
Writing:
  • Primary: Write 50000 words on 5 main projects – 6530/50000 words
    • Heart of Christmas – 1126 words
      • Sean and Braeden were sitting on the couch, and she caught Sean grinning. Of course, that could have just as much to do with Braeden’s hand on his thigh as it did the back and forth between her and Declan.
    • Still Burning – 1390 words
      • “What if I don’t want to talk?” she asked.
        “Then, I don’t think you would have let me up. You would have told me to fuck off and go away. You’re pretty good at that.”
    • Whatever It Takes – 1184 words
      • There just had to be something she could do. She looked over at the table again, and Jayla quickly averted her eyes.
        Carisa would have to figure it out.
    • High on Loving You – 1350 words
      • Maybe Anna should try to talk to Morgan about it. But what exactly would she say? That Kacy had been strict with her own daughter. Anna wouldn’t treat any child like that, let alone her own. But, maybe that was just her. Was it really her business to interfere?
    • By the Gun – 391 words
      • No matter what Carlos seemed to think, the ranch still needed people to run it. It was a big responsibility. If Pa had left it with her, she wouldn’t be complaining about it.
    • Patrick & Sarah – 138 words
      • That had been a waste of his time. But, he would ride by Sarah’s house one more time and make sure everything was well there.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 39 words
      • “He is asleep,” Eydyami finally said. “But, he will wake again. Then, he should be on his way.”
    • Roman – 88 words
      • When he reached the house, the light in the kitchen was on, but the rest of the house was dark. It was late, but not that late. He didn’t know why almost all the lights would be off already.
    • Dougal & Shae – 150 words
      • Dougal shook his head. “It was a mistake to go. A matchmaking attempt by a new friend.”
    • Jacob & Matthew – 51 words
      • Jacob walked down the sidewalk, glad to be done with chores until tonight. He needed to get away from things for a bit. He really couldn’t wait to ride out to that game up in North Fork. He’d expected to meet Matthew up there, but now they could ride together.
    • Mike & Fadil – 381 words
      • He hurried past Fadil, needing to escape before he made a fool of himself. He thought that might be all too easy around that man.
    • Preggers – 131 words
      • And yet somehow they’d come together.
    • Hawk – 113 words
      • “Yes, he would have,” I said before he could finish that thought. “He wanted me dead eight years ago. He thought I was, or close to it, when he dumped me in that ditch. He’ll just think of it as finally finishing the job.”
    • Sean & Braeden – 230 words
      • Braeden hesitated for a moment. He really didn’t want to run into Sean again. But, he also wouldn’t leave his brother in danger because of his own troublesome heart.
    • Jared’s Stepfather(for Patreon bonus content) – 100 words
Social Media:
  • Primary: Post Writing Wednesday, Fiction Friday, SOCS, WeWriWa, & Sunday Summary posts each week – posted 4/5. Skipped Fiction Friday as I don’t have Staring at the Sun ready to start putting up on Wattpad yet. Posted SoCS early Saturday morning(though technically wrote it Friday. Yeah, I sort of cheated). And I got WeWriWa posted. And this one in just a moment.
  • Secondary: Post to Patreon at least 1x a week – technically, I did post this week, though it was still in July. Still, you can read about Still Burning and the other stories in the Hunter Family series(all my content is currently being put at the $1 level until I build up some patrons).
WeWriWa: “Through a Minefield”
Welcome back to another visit with the Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop for anyone who likes to write. I’ve got a busy weekend ahead of me. We have to take the dogs into the vet this morning(Saturday). Then our motorcycle club is having their annual ride benefitting the oncology department at a local hospital. We’ll be helping out before the ride and then there’s the after party. And when we get home, I need to bake a cake and zucchini bread for my daughter’s birthday party tomorrow. Then, there’s all the getting ready for people to be in my house tomorrow. I don’t care if they’re family, they are still people. In my house. *shudder*
Anyway, you’re not here for social awkwardness. I have another snippet from Hawk’s story for you. Last week, I left them finding shelter somewhere that has memories. This week, they have found that shelter and both are remembering what happened the last time they were there:
I walked over to where Devil sat on an over-turned crate. He gave me a little smirk as I approached. Yeah, he remembered this place, too. “I’m guessing we won’t be passing the time the same way we did last time, until the rain stopped.”
I couldn’t hold in my laugh, then I had to go and ruin it by saying, “At least you won’t spend the next several days avoiding me.”
His face flushed, and he dropped his gaze. Damn it. We’d made a lot of progress over the last few months, but sometimes I still felt like I was walking through a minefield with him. I slid a finger under his chin and tipped his head back. “I only meant it as a joke,” I said, “not to hurt you.”
How did they spend the time before? Why did Devil avoid him? What are they going to do this time?
Stream Of Consciousness Saturday: High/Low
High enough for you?”
Isaac turned from the art supplies he was sorting at the back of the room. And burst out laughing. “Konner, put your shirt down. That is not the kind of model we’re using for this class.”
His ex-boyfriend, and still current best friend, let the hem of his t-shirt drop back down. “Well, it’s good to see you laugh again at least. Its been too long. Ever since he came back to town.”
“It hasn’t even been a week,” Isaac argued. “And Tereza said he’s not in town. It was just for the weekend. He’s staying at some rehab hospital.” His stomach did a hard twist at the reason for that.
“So, that’s it? He’s not coming back.”
“I don’t know, ” Isaac admitted. “She said it’s not far away. He might come around on the weekends, but he has to have someone pick him up, so it depends.”
“He can’t drive?”
“Not without his right leg.” He dropped the paint brush he’d just picked up and pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes as he swore.
Then Konner was there, an arm around Isaac’s shoulders. “It’s okay, ” he said. “He’s still alive. He can adapt.”
“I don’t want him to have to adapt. I don’t want him to have to hurt like this.” He rubbed the moisture from his face. “Why am I so stupid to still love him?”
Low, Isaac,” Jonas’ voice came from the doorway behind him. “You broke up with me. And while you’re in another man’s arms, you claim to still love me. That’s just really low.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today’s Stream of Consciousness prompt was to use High/Low somewhere in your post. And the first line popped into my head. I took it from there. What’s going to happen here next? Will Jonas be the one to walk away this time? Will these two boys ever make things right between them again?

Confession time: I actually wrote this last night on my phone while going to get groceries(no, I wasn’t driving) because I didn’t want to lose the idea, and we have a busy day today(vet, motorcycle ride & after party then baking cake & zucchini bread for daughter’s party tomorrow). So I wanted to get it done.

Writing Wednesday: Burnt

Ouch. I mentioned in Sunday’s post, that we were taking the kids to the local water park with some friends and their kids. And we did. They had a lot of fun. Especially with the new attraction: “The Battle of Lake Erie”. it even has the Brig Niagara up top that dumps out water and references to Erie’s role in the War of 1812. We were there for 5 hours and I managed to get rather burned. And that was even with putting sun screen on. The kids’ face got a little pink, but otherwise they didn’t seem to get anything. Me, on the other hand:

And I usually don’t burn too bad.

Other than dealing with the sunburn, this week has been pretty good. I spent Monday finishing up my July goals(and I posted my July Wrap-up on Tuesday). Tuesday I planned to focus on working on By the Gun for the day. But, the words just weren’t coming. So, I decided to switch things up again. At least for this month, I’ll be spending an hour on each of my main projects, an hour for editing, then an hour on side projects. That leaves me another hour at the end of the day to play around with another project(that I have mentioned below). We’ll see how this works for me.

And for now, it’s time for WiPPet Wednesday, the blog hop where we share a snippet of a current work in progress that somehow coincides with the date. Today I’m going to be sharing from that new project I mentioned up above. You may recognize characters here, though it’s been about five years since we see them in Whatever It Takes. Today I have 6 paragraphs(8-2) from the very beginning of this story.

“So, the hero returns.”

Jonas Pedera looked toward the voice. He’d always liked Carlos Armas. Right now, he just wanted to punch him in the face.

“Vete a la mierda.”

He saw Carlos flinch at the harsh words, but he didn’t care. Using his crutches, he swung his way to an empty table. At least in the couple months he’d been stateside, he’d gotten more adept at using them. He doubted that was the silver lining his therapist wanted him to look for.

“Someone’s been teaching him more Spanish, I see.”

Jonas tightened his hands around the grips of the crutches. Santiago. They’d spent many nights talking and he’d taught Jonas more of the language from the heritage they shared. Jonas’ own father had taught him some before he died, and so did his mother and brother, but they’d left out all the curses. Santiago had taught him even more than that. And now he was gone.

Why is Jonas so angry about being called a hero? What exactly happened to him? Both are explained a little later in this scene. I think I’ll be sharing from this for now, so you may get to see that soon. 🙂 As for what Jonas told Carlos, it basically translates to “fuck off/you.” There are some benefits to still having my Spanish dictionary from college. 😉
