Home of a mother, wife, writer

My new writing schedule seems to be coming together. So does that story I keep picking up and setting down again. Now, if only that internal alarm clock would stop malfunctioning. After Monday, it was working pretty well, getting me up between 4-5 in the morning, pretty usual for me. Saturday morning…a little after 1 a.m. And I couldn’t fall back to sleep. This morning I woke up a few times, way too early, but fell back asleep until about 6. So maybe this is getting me back on track.

Saturday morning we went out to breakfast, then looked at new grills. Our old one was only cooking on the back burners and Thursday when I went to use it, the hose fell right off the propane tank. Which explained why the flames suddenly went out. We ended up finding one we liked and it was even on sale, so we got it. After that, we went to the used book store, I turned in a small box of books, bringing my credit up to about $135. I got 5 books & the boy got 2. Cost me $15. The girl got a few books as well, but she had her own money(so did the boy, but he left his wallet in the truck). Then, we went and got groceries. Got more than we’d planned on, but I got some healthier snack stuff instead of the crap I usually snack on.

According to my phone’s health tracking app(which the Gear Fit band I have connects to), I got in twice my activity time yesterday. And this morning my knee is feeling swollen and achy. Yay? That seems to be the trade-off to actually doing something.

Plotting

  • Still Burning finish Story Toolkit, Outline
  • Jayla & Carisa(Gilbert, Co #7) brainstorm, character back stories, plot summaryget through Story Toolkit: Supporting Characters – This is going onto the backburner for the moment. I’ll pick it back up once I finish Not Meant to Be.
  • High on Your Love(Kurztown #6) – brainstorm, character back stories, plot summary, Story Toolkit, Outline. This is Morgan(Kendall’s brother) & Anna’s story. I’m not currently sure if it’s going to be a Christmas novella(since that is when it takes place) or a full-length novel. Guess that will depend on what the characters have to tell me. I got the mind maps done, and Morgan’s back story started.

Writing

  • Not Meant to Be – Add 53000 words/28 scenes to finish 1st draft – 20681 words/23 scenes finished this month, 1477 words/2 scenes finished this week
    • Why did Toby think she was so weak that she had to be protected on all sides? Couldn’t he see how miserable that made her? How she couldn’t stand the thought of him using himself as a shield for her. She wanted him to stand beside her, not in front of her. *Oh, Denise, for a man like Toby, love and protection are so wrapped together, he can’t separate them.
  • Still Burning(Hunter Family #4) – Write 70000 words/61 scenes – 1397 words/1 scene finished
    • He wondered if discussing the volunteers from the town’s other department counted toward the moratorium on fire talk. Or would that be sorted under girl problems? He shook his head. “No, it’s nothing.”
  • Heart of Christmas(BC Security #3.5) – Write 30000 words/42 scenes – 745 words/1 scene finished
    • “Those Dougherty boys,” Sean murmured, and she jerked her gaze to his.
Sean’s smile remained soft, but she cleared her throat. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
  • By the Gun – Write 50000 words/22 scenes to finish part/book 1(haven’t decided if I’ll write the book in 3 parts or make it 3 different books. Likely will decide when I finish the first part). – 1022 words/2 scenes
    • No, it couldn’t be. He had to be wrong about what he’d just seen.
Varick Steinwehr was dead. Luke had killed him.
  • Side Projects Add 4400 words between all projects – 11536/4400 words, 4911 words this week
    • Roman – 386 words – Carlos blinked then, and Roman saw it. Exactly what his boss had suggested. Pain and grief buried under the layer of anger. And it was a thin layer now that he looked closely. He wasn’t sure how Carlos would hold up if it was ripped away.
    • Tavin & Haiwee – 509 words – He wouldn’t have expected to be so sad about that. He had not even been home in five years. It should not make him want to mourn. And yet he did. His brother had moved his young family to the city, and they had a place there, and he was learning a new trade. It had to be enough. He wanted to invite them to come here, but what had he to offer them? Not even his own land.
    • Preggers – 323 words – But, it was. And that woman in there had started to reawaken it. That thought brought another sob. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry, Darren.” She’d loved her husband and missed him so much. So how could she be having these feelings for someone else after only a few months? It wasn’t right.
    • Jacob & Matthew – 366 words – Barrett snorted softly as the woman headed away after he declined anything besides coffee. “What she wanted to offer you had nothing to do with food, my friend.”“As you should know, Barrett,” he said with barely a glance up at him. “Maybe you should go and tell her you have an appetite.” *This is pretty close to the beginning of Stained Blood. Soon, Barrett will only have an appetite for one woman, but he hasn’t met her yet.
    • Hang On – 345 words – We climbed as we had done most things since we became friends. Together.
    • Dougal & Shae – 245 words – That brought a deep chuckle from Donovan. “I doubt that’s all you are. Besides, if I threatened to knock your lights out for daring to look at my sister, that dear girl would kick my ass.”
    • Patrick & Sarah – 256 words – He tried not to think of that, or how out of place he felt in town, felt pretty much everywhere since coming back from the war, as he rode toward town. He’d much rather think about Sarah, about how the few smiles he’d gotten from her had filled him with light and warmth. How he wanted to make sure she was able to give away even more of them.
    • Midas’ Daughter – 792 words – “Your father won’t be happy,” Flip told her.
“Since when is he ever?” She moved around him but still managed to catch the way his lips curled up at that. It was the closest she ever seem to get to a smile from him these days. But, she would have sworn his hand brushed her arm as she passed.
    • Hawk – 583 words – If it was possible, Mr. Bentley’s grin widened. “The day you two stopped fighting what you felt for each other and accepted it.”
    • Mike & Fadil – 726 words – Fadil could only stare at the two of them. This man had a daughter? Now, Fadil really didn’t know what to think. If Mike was in a relationship, maybe he really hadn’t been checking Fadil out. Maybe he’d just been imagining all of that. And if he was in a relationship and had been checking him out, Fadil didn’t want anything to do with that. *making assumptions is never good, Fadil. You might just blow a chance at something. 😀
    • Mason & Lila – 380 words – From a distance, she heard a car door slam, but she didn’t step back from Mason. Whoever was visiting his parents didn’t matter to her. Only his lips on hers did. *Yeah, Lila, you may want to worry about that actually

Editing

  • Flames of Renewal – CP Edits
  • In the Moonlight – Transfer from OneNote(on my Surface) to Scrivener(on my laptop) – 27 chapters(there’s actually 32, counting the epilogue, but I’d already started it before) – 24/27 chapters typed up.
  • Stained Blood – Adding this in as I’m starting to get chapters back from beta: Compile comments – 1/26 chapters.
  • Snow White Twist – Beta edits, rename, & submitcompiled notes from 1 beta reader to the main document(so I can put them all in one place when I get them back from other reader) for 8/8 chapters(1st 2 chapters done last month). Still waiting to hear from other beta reader. Have a potential title for it as well. Still simmering on that, though.
  • Dance with the Devilread through, make revisions, & polish – Applied 81/81 comments(not counting areas I highlighted, though those will be fixed as I go through, too). Polished 4/10 chapters.
  • Beta Read Read 58 chapters(total of 73, but that’s what I have left) & return to author – 58/58 chapters. Emailed it back late Wednesday morning.

Blogging

  • Story a Day – Write 31 stories – 27/31 stories written, 6 this week. Working on today’s right now.
    • Diner – Anna’s getting the diner kitchen ready for the day and gets a surprise visitor.
    • The List – Morgan tells his ex exactly what his problems with her are.
    • Hidden Message – Caelen writes a letter to Alaina with a hidden message, trying to explain why he acted the way he did(which I haven’t written that part, so I only have a vague idea of what he did).
    • Save Herself – Denise is determined to prove she can save herself this time.
    • Letters Home – Luke sends letters during several events in his life(back story for By the Gun)
    • Romance in the Air – a bit of a love story(obviously, not romantic) between mother and son & the start of a romantic entanglement between that son(Fadil) and Mike

Reading

  • Listen: 5 books – 6/5 for the month, 1 this week
    •  Conspiracy(Lindsay Buroker) – this is book 4 in her Emperor’s Edge series.
    • The Immortal Irishman(Timothy Egan) – I don’t read or listen to much non-fiction. But this one was the daily deal back on St. Patrick’s day and it combines two of my interests, Irish history and the Civil War. I’m really enjoying it and it’s inspiring to pick up a story I wrote years ago and have replotted that takes place in the same time period.
  • Read: 31 books – 28.5/31, 7.5 this week
    • Hometown Heartbreaker(Maisey Yates) – Finished this Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed it. I’m only counting it as half, since it was included in the back of another novel
    • Up in Flames(Sidney Bristol) – Finished this Sunday afternoon. Really enjoyed it. The next 2 books in the series are written by a different author, then this one wrote the fourth, so we’ll see how that goes.
    • Death at Peony House(Krista Walsh) – I started this Sunday afternoon. At 30%. This was still in my Unlimited folder, though I think the series is out of KU now. So this will be my “extra” book for now. Really enjoying it(so good incentive to finish my other books for the week and get back to it).
    • One Good Earl Deserves a Lover(Sara MacLean) – Started this Monday morning. Finished it Tuesday night. Really enjoyed it.
    • Before that Night(Violet Duke) – Started this Tuesday morning. Finished it Tuesday afternoon. Liked it.
    • Reckoning(Myndi Shafer) – Started this Wednesday morning. Finished it Wednesday evening. Not sure if it’s because it’s been a while since I read the last one, but this was just…eh. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really pull me in and it didn’t really feel like anything was happening through the first half. If it wasn’t the third book in the series, I might have just put it down.
    • Hard to Come By(Laura Kaye) – Started this Wednesday night. Really enjoyed it. Can’t wait to read Charlie & Jeremy’s story, which is the novella that comes next.
    • Tempt Me Like This(Bella Andre) – Started this Friday afternoon. Finished it on Saturday night. Liked it, but there wasn’t that “are they going to make it” moment, so it was kind of a let down.
    • Hostage to the Stars(Veronica Scott) – Started this Saturday morning. Finished it Saturday evening. Enjoyed it.

Crafting

  • Knit: Duo Cable Hat – Finished another 4 decrease rounds. 8 more to go.

Comments on: "Sunday Summary: Coming Together" (10)

  1. Wow! You’ve had a good session (and I still haven’t started my stories!)

    • Thanks, it was pretty good.
I’m still working on mine. But, stepping away to go on our first motorcycle ride of the season. 😀

  2. Sorry to hear about the grill and your knee. Glad you were able to find a new one and on sale!

    So much progress, wow!

    • The grill is several years old and we’d been looking at getting a new one, we just thought we’d be able to use this one a little longer. Now, if only they had sales on new knees 😉
Thanks! I’m pretty happy with it.

  3. Funny, Jim went for his first ride of the season yesterday, too. =)

    • Haha. It was a great day for it. We’d planned to go out before, but it always seemed to be raining. We got home just before it started raining, too, so that was good(we actually did get hit with a scattering of rain drops, but that was it).

  4. Awesome progress! And hurrah for a new grill. Especially given that summer is just now kicking off; I’m sure you’ll get lots of use out of it in the coming months.

    • Thanks, Denise. We did get to cook on it the other night. It was great. I didn’t have to keep moving the steak to the back of the grill so it would cook. And we had some nice grilled potatoes.

  5. Just checking in. As usual, your update gives me lots to think about. I still really like how you manage so many different projects at the same time — as well as how specifically you report your progress. This is especially useful as I start planning for June. Thank YOU and may you have another great week. Those bits of dialogue reveal much about character.
