Home of a mother, wife, writer

It’s the weekend again, so time for another installment of Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop for everyone who likes to write. Still sharing from Into the Sun, which I just finished on Friday. I have 8 sentences today, with a new character, Barbie(who is Bull’s wife).

I didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. But, her eyes came to me then, and I felt that panic well up again. “Take in another stray, Icarus?”
“You try to pet this one, Barbie, and he’ll bolt right out of here.”
Her eyes softened as if she understood exactly what he meant. But, still, that term rankled. “I’m not a stray,” I muttered. “I’m not worthless.”

We had the boy’s K-4 orientation Wednesday night. He has the same teacher the girl did(well, one. They do it differently now. For her, it had been one big class, this one is separated into two). 1 or 2 kids he knows from preschool are in his class, as well as a friend’s daughter(her older brother is in the girl’s class this year as well).

Then, the kids had their yearly check-ups on Thursday. The boy is tall & skinny(about 60% for height and 40% for weight) & the girl is short & skinny(about 23% for height & 30 for weight). This is right about where they’ve always run. He’s only about 4 inches shorter than her now.

We went down to the Crawford County Fair yesterday afternoon/evening. I used to spend most days of fair week out there with my sisters/cousins. Now, we’re lucky to get down one day. But, we checked out some of the horses, sheep, pigs, goats, and cows. Ate some fair food, saw some tractors and had ice cream(even the small cone is pretty big). And for anyone who has picked up First Choice, Second Chance, this is where some of the scenes are set.

He has friends’ birthday party(their twins) to go to today, so the girl and I will probably hang at the bookstore for a while. Our favorite place to be.

  • Demons Rising: Polish – finished this on Thursday. Ended up cutting 3881 words. It’s still a little over 90k.
  • Guarding the Heart: Finish Chapter 18 – heh. Nope. After Wednesday, I decided to just set this aside for now. I was only adding a little a day, and my attention felt too scattered. It actually got moved to my calendar for next year, so that might be when I pick it back up.
  • Into the Sun: Finish 1st draft – YES! FINALLY! I started this at the very end of March. Mostly worked on it over the weekends. Originally had planned on it being a short story, ~3k. Hahaha. Realized I had more story than that but doubted I had enoughf or novella length. Another HAHAHA. It’s a couple hundred short of 30k. Not bad for starting with a vague idea. Added 3580 words this week. Next weekend I’ll start revising it.
  • Read: GMC: Goal, Motivation, Conflict – get through 75% – did this too. I’ll finish this week.
  • Read: Make It Count(Megan Erickson), & Second Chance at the Sugar Shack(Candis Terry) – Finished both of these. Also read The Guy Next Door(anthology) and was kind of ‘meh’ about it. I started a couple other ones, but ended up setting them aside. Then, read Flirting with Disaster(Victoria Dahl). Really enjoyed this one. Also read Wicked Path(Eliza Tilton) and Sweet Memories(Steena Holmes). And I started Forgotten Ages(Lindsay Buroker).
  • Flames of Justice – wasn’t going to start working on this until September, but I finished Demons Rising early. I got the note cards for revisions finished, so I’ll be starting revisions next week.

I’m doing my writing goals a little different. Going to work in the morning, before kids are up, then again until the boy gets home from school(starting Tuesday). Then, I’ll get everything else done and go back to writing goals until the girl gets home. So, goals for next week:

  • Flames of Justice – 1st round of revisions. Possibly: start read through. If still have time: 2nd round of revisions
  • Into the Sun – Read through & revision plan
  • Read: GMC: Goal, Motivation, Conflict – finish

I’ve finished all the books on my list for the month, so I’m not including it in my list even though I’ll still be reading.

  1. Hmm Barb sounds like she has been around the block a few times.
Congratulations on finishing the writing, good luck with your editing!

  2. Of course she’s not worthless, though I suspect it’ll take a bunch more words to prove it.

  3. Poor Icarus! But an interesting snippet for sure…

  4. Awesome job on your goals, and congrats on finishing Into the Sun! I know the feeling when a story is growing and growing. But if that’s the length it needs to be, then good. 🙂

    • Thanks! Yes, I tend to have that problem with short stories. I actually think they might have more story to tell. If it’s not accepted for the submission I plan to send it in for, I may end up adding to it.

  5. Aw, that response to the nickname twisted the heartstrings. Nice snippet. Contrats on finishing this draft. And wow, so many other irons in the fire! So prolific and yet a busy mom. My hat’s off to ya!

  6. I want to hug Trace (I often want to hug strays)…

I hope he can get past that rooted belief that he just might be worthless. And, by the way, Icarus is a fantastic name for a character!

While revising my When Trip Meets T’Pol story, “Slow Jazz Awakening”, I realized there’s way too much in it, and it’s way too important to the version of their story I’m weaving, to be a short story. It’s a novella, at least…when you have just shy of 24K words of revision NOTES, that could be an indicator that the 10K SHORT STORY you wanted to get down to 8K has other ideas…

Fortunately, since it’s fanfic, I can serialize it, and, if I don’t start posting until I’m done, or nearly done with the polishing, I should be able to fan the interest as I go along…

Great progress this week – and that’s a pretty cool hat the boy has there! =D

    • He could certainly use a few hugs. He hasn’t had an easy life. Icarus(his real name will be revealed a little later)had the same urge, but doesn’t think it would go over well at the moment.
Haha, yeah, that’s usually what happens to me. I’m thinking these characters still have more story to tell. I may either add more to this and publish as a serial, or do a series of novellas. Because I didn’t already have enough ideas in my head apparently. 🙂
      Thanks

      • Oh, I so know that “I didn’t have enough ideas in my head already”, bursting with new ideas feeling.

Exciting, and daunting, all at once…

  7. Picking up strays, hehehe. I like that! I feel that wy sometimes about people I run into. That can be a good and a bad thing. 🙂

Well done this week, well done!!
